The Adventure Guys
We admit it. We've got great jobs. How many people get told by their bosses to go out and play? We write about those experiences each Thursday in The News Tribune’s Adventure section. But there's always more to the story. Here, Craig Hill and Jeffrey P. Mayor will share the inside stories on their adventures - including their misadventures - plus post news and answer your questions.

I hiked about 13 miles in Stevens Canyon this morning. Yes, the road is still closed at Box Canyon, but it scheduled to open by Aug. 1.

Including today's hikes (and the hiking Sunrise package that runs Sunday) I've hiked 69 miles in the park this summer. The goal is 110 miles in honor of the park's 110th anniversary.

Here's a pic I snapped from Bench Lake.

So I took my son along yesterday morning for a little hiking at Rainier for part of the Rainier 110 project. This is the 110th anniversary of Mount Rainier National Park and I'm celebrating by hiking 110 miles in the park. I'll be posting dispatches here and in the paper.

So far I've bagged 56.9 miles.

Here are pics from the four hikes I did with my 8-year-old son, Alex.

1. Deer Creek Falls, 1 mile (Off Highway 123)

2. Grove of the Patriarhs, 1.5 miles (Near Ohanapecosh)

3. Silver Falls Loop, 3 miles (At Ohanapecosh)

4. Dege Peak, 3 miles (Between Sunrise and Sunrise Point.)

The road to Sunrise will open today according to the ranger at the Sunrise entrance ranger station.

It was originally scheduled to open July 3.

I spoke to the ranger yesterday before and after hiking to the Owyhigh Lakes as part of the Rainier 110 project.

If you go to Sunrise be prepared for snow on the trail. The Owyhigh Trail had snow over the trail near the campground. Sunrise (6,400 feet)is about 1,000 feet higher than the Owyhigh Lakes (5,400 feet).

So we launched a new project this morning: Rainier 110.

This is year marks the 110th anniversary of Mount Rainier National Park and we will commemorate the anniversary by hiking 110 miles in the park this summer.

I've got 16.9 miles down so far, which almost all of the trails that aren't covered with snow. In fact, a couple of those mile were over the snow.

There are five waterfalls that can be reached fairly easily right now. And they worth the trip right now because they are raging as the snow melts.

Here are pics from my hike last week:

CHENUIS FALLS

IPSUT FALLS

RANGER FALLS

CARTER FALLS
