Lets see... in 1965 the US manufactured about 95% of the clothing sold here , in 1985 it was down to about 50% and in 2007 only 5% of clothing sold here in the US was made in the US.
That's just one industry and the outcome of outsourcing. The garment workers union was one of the strongest ones and yet they couldn't stem the tide.

Outsourcing has pretty well destroyed the US market place , workforce and production schedules. Only now does Boeing's leaders see that this might be a problem?

Yeah, and as long as you continue to use the Jack Welch model and trust leadership to the clowns that ran that operation into the ground, you are going to have big issues.

Rumor has it Boeing can't even manage to retool for the 737 in Renton without hosing the tooling up. And, a bunch young engineers who can't even speak enough english to talk to the factory workers run around shaking their heads and talking to themselves.

You laid off your brains and expertise over the laid 9 years to show a short term gain in the form of dividents for the stockholders and burned the future of the company at the stake of self-serving interests.

Condit accelerated the process and McDon/Douglas people finished it thanks to him. Condit and the Board turned a good company over to a bunch of also rans who couldn't build anything original.

What a shame.

Boeing can't wait to leave WA, and who can blame them? Between regular strikes and the insane taxes Olympia levies on businesses, it's a wonder they didn't take the manufacturing with them when Corporate left 10 years ago.

Said it before, and I'll say it again: buying Knight Ridder (and their debt) in an era of declining print media was an epically stupid decision.
