Lights & Sirens

The News Tribune's Lights & Sirens blog provides breaking news, updates on on-going investigations and insights into other news from the Tacoma, Pierce County and South Puget Sound criminal justice community. It also gives The News Tribune an avenue to interact with readers, answer “What was that?” questions and provides a venue for readers to ask about on-going criminal justice issues and problems in their neighborhoods. The blog aims to inform, educate and, at times, entertain with weird or wacky crime news.

It's a scam.

Here's the press release from the Salvation Army about the scam.

SEATTLE, WA (May 13, 2008) – The Salvation Army is warning the public about an email letter, asking for donations and personal information including bank account numbers. The email scam has already surfaced throughout the web and is being forwarded by an unknown source, to trick people into thinking they're giving money to The Army. The email is titled, "Urgent Reply Needed..Pls Read!!" Please disregard this letter if received and remember the following key details of how the The Salvation Army has raised funds for more than 100 years.

- The Salvation Army does not participate in 'cold calls' except to large businesses.
- In any letter The Salvation Army sends, the recipient is addressed by name, NOT 'sir/madam'
- The Salvation Army NEVER asks a donor to provide his/her social security number
- Legitimate emails from The Salvation Army come from a consistent "salvationarmy.org" address, NOT a "gmail" address

Here's a copy of the fraudulent letter.
