Pierce County law enforcement officers will be out on the streets today with speed radars as part of an ongoing campaign to target leadfoot drivers.

Starting at 7 a.m., officers will be targeting speeding “hot spots,” including River Road, State Route 509, Valley Avenue East, Highway 99 and Meridian, the Tacoma-Pierce County DUI Task Force reported. Officers will be out throughout the day.

The emphasis is part of a yearlong, statewide campaign aimed at curbing deadly and serious injury accidents.

During the X-52 campaign, beefed up patrols will be on the road each week of the year.

Also ...

Another nighttime seatbelt campaign starts Monday. Officers in Pierce County will be out looking for unbuckled drivers during the night time hours.

The Click It or Ticket It campaign will run through June 1.

Turning into a police state? Unfortunantly I do believe we already have!

I saw a speed trap Thursday morning on highway 16. For some reason a street sweeper was operating in the East bound lanes over Nalley Valley. (probably cleaning up after an accident). This caused about a ten minute backup to get past the street sweeper. Naturally everyone starts going about 70 on the now wide open freeway. Until they see the four motorcycle cops running a speed trap around Cheney.

What a dirty trick.

Lakewood police car catching speeders near the EMQ Casino Hotel. 45mph zone and a few people now and then will do 50. I have never seen anything like 60 or above in that stretch.
Nice to know people in Lakewood are so law abiding that the police are bored and come to Fife to practice their low speed pursuits...

The more the merrier. Makes the streets safer. I'm all for it, and I don't think there should be any warning. If people behaved appropriately, there'd be no need for emphasis. Some people get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle and when the engine starts they amazingly lose their minds.
