Firefighters evacuated a building in Fife on Friday afternoon while they cleaned up a hazardous materials spill, the Tacoma Fire Department reported.
Firefighters responded to 2807 Valley Ave. about 2:45 p.m. after someone at that address reported a solvent spill.
Firefighters found that a 540-gallon container filled with Isobutyl Acetate had spilled, TFD's Joe Meinecke reported on the department's blog.
The following is from Meinecke's narrative:
The first in arriving engine was on scene within 7 minutes. TFD’s Hazardous-Materials crew’s diked the liquid from reaching storm drains, plugged the leaking container and used vapor suppressing foam to minimize the effects of any fumes coming from the product. The product was contained to the area of the spill – with negligible environmental impact.
No injuries were reported.

A Burlington Northern Santa Fe engineer was injured when his locomotive derailed in a collision at the railway's Tacoma shipyard.
BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas said a train was leaving the yard, bound for Portland, at about 7:45 p.m. when it collided with another train that was switching cars. The locomotive derailed, injuring the engineer and spilling about 1,500 gallons of fuel. Some cars were damaged.
No waterways were affected and no product was spilled. Crews are cleaning up the scene and the trains will be replaced on the rails overnight. No main rail lines were affected.
The engineer was taken to a local hospital, but his condition was not available Monday night.
State labor regulators and Tacoma Goodwill Industries have settled the company’s appeal of a nearly $50,000 fine stemming from the death of a developmentally disabled worker just over a year ago.
Goodwill will now have to pay $13,300 for three violations related to the implementation of its accident prevention program, record keeping and the safety features of its box tipping machines, the nonprofit announced Friday. The company was initially cited with nine deficiencies.
On April 15 last year, Nick Miller (pictured here), a 27-year-old with cognitive abilities of a 10-year-old in some areas, was crushed under a hydraulic tipper on Goodwill’s loading dock. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.
Immediately after the accident, Goodwill undertook voluntary safety improvements, including placing lock-out devices on its tipper machines.
“There was a lot of very intense discussion,” Department of Labor & Industries spokeswoman Elaine Fischer said. “In the end we did make some adjustments.”
Goodwill CEO Terry A. Hayes said a statement that the company maintains its commitment to "exceed the spirit and intent of state safety standards."
At the time, Hayes had objected to many of the penalties saying the “facts don’t fit the findings.” She noted Goodwill had collaborated with the Department of Labor & Industries on previous violations and followed their recommendations in areas they were subsequently accused of violating.
The agency’s case file on the death, which ran more than 1,500 pages, showed Goodwill bosses were confused about Miller’s duties, The News Tribune reported in December. Some told L&I Miller was never authorized to operate the tipper while others, backed up by training records, said it was part of his regular duties.
The attorney for Miller’s family could not be reached Friday afternoon.
“We’ve accomplished our goal of a safer workplace with this settlement,” Steve Cant, assistant director for L&I’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health, said in a joint press statement with Goodwill on Friday.
Miller’s loss was still deeply felt by employees of the company, Hayes said.
A Tacoma Fire hazardous materials team is at the scene of a chemical spill at Emerald Services in the Port of Tacoma.
Tacoma Fire spokeswoman Jolene Davis said about 150 gallons of methyl ethyl ketone spilled out of its main container, but is being held by an outer, backup container. The liquid is a solvent that can cause irritation to the eyes, nose and throat, according to the EPA.
Crews are on scene at 1825 E. Alexander Ave., but there's no immediate danger. Davis said there were two employees on scene at the time of the spill, but there are no injuries. Emerald Services is a plant that recycles chemicals, according to the company's Web site.
Here's a detail of a Tacoma Police evidence photo that shows the doll Nick Miller's parents think he might have been going after when he was crushed to death April 15 at Tacoma Goodwill Industries' Operations Center. There wasn't space in the paper for it.

A person was killed just before 11:30 a.m. at the Goodwill Operations Center in Tacoma's Nalley Valley, Tacoma police said.
Update: Talked to the Tacoma Fire Department, who said they found a man inside a trash compactor on the loading dock of the business. He was transported to a hospital trauma center.
Goodwill spokesman Matthew Erlich said the machine was not a compactor, but one that lifted large cardboard boxes.
Elaine Fischer, a spokeswoman with the Department of Labor and Industries, said they had opened an investigation.
Update: The dead man's name is Nicholas Miller, his grandmother said. He was in his mid 20s and had worked at the Goodwill for several years.
Goodwill said Miller was 27.
