When Ed Murrieta eats and drinks, people listen

It used to be La Costa. Now it's got a new owner and a new name. (Photo: Exit133.com)

Before I even forked my first chili relleno at a made-over Mexican restaurant in downtown Tacoma, this e-mail hit my in-box:

I passed the former La Costa daily, and noticed that it's opened now under a new name, Gringo de Loco with a graphic of a sleeping Mexican peasant.

Offhand there are three things that annoy me: First, it's just weird that they use the pejorative "Gringo." I guess that's OK if you assume the owners are "gringos" -- that would just make it self-deprecating.

Second, "Gringo de Loco," just doesn't make any sense.

Finally, the sleeping Mexican is a cliched, culturally-insensitive stereotype, and really uncalled for in this day and age. (At least they left out the saguaro cactus.) Not as bad as a faux-Southern restaurant featuring a
"little black Sambo" image, perhaps, but similar.

I'm not sure if the name was over-thought or under-thought, but it's a real clinker.

I spoke with Gringo de Loco owner Rod Collen, who purchased La Costa in February and, following a good scrubbing, new equipment and fresh coats of paint, re-christened the restaurant last week, keeping the Mexican menu but adding live blues music.

"It's a little bit like explaining the punchline of a joke," Collen said. "Some people said I was crazy to buy La Costa. Buying La Costa was kinda like buying the Titanic after it hit the ice berg."

As for the gringo grammar that translates as "white person of crazy":

"We were already combining Mexican food with the blues, so we just butchered it," Collen said. "The majority of my staff speaks fluent Spanish. I asked them about it. The proper grammar would be 'Gringo Loco' but we all felt it sets us apart. It's a little bit uncommon, but Google it -- we're the only one out there."

Collen and his wife, Julie (who's doing the cooking), previously ran Mandolin Cafe. They're shooting for a grand opening on May 5 -- or Mayo de Cinco, if you want to butcher the day that commemorates the Mexican army's victory over French forces.

Collen said his restaurant will host Wednesday night blues jams starting next week. But don't look for La Costa's fabulous gender-bending song-and-dance shows at Gringo de Loco.

"We're going after a more professional crowd," Collen said.

My first taste of Gringo de Loco reminded me of La Costa -- middling Mexican fare served with chips, salsa and bean dip, but minus those fabulous men who dress and perform as women.

I work downtown and have been walking by La Costa to and from work for years. I only ate there once, the place was filthy. I'm sure i'm not the only person who had eaten there who thought it desperately needed to be cleaned. I havn't eaten at Gringo de Locos yet but i'm glad to hear they did some cleaning and the paint job outside looks good. One thing to add to the person who was offended by the Mexican on there sign, maybe thats not a Mexican, just some guy wearing a sombrero. As anyone who ate at La Costa can tell you, you can't always tell what a person is based solely on what they are wearing...lol

Tacoma is ever changing change can easily be embraced!
As a frequent dine-in customer of the former la Costas I too had my doubts, there show was unlike any other I have ever witnessed, and I can actually say i have attended it many times. The food was cheep and great and the employees could always make you smile. However like most small businesses you have your faults. the place was filthy and the bathrooms almost unusable, especially on the nights of the show. In the times I went to enjoy myself I also witnessed some terrible things. Fights that led to hospital visits, heroine using in the bathroom, and all kinds of harassment. Now lets not try and fool ourselves, is this the Tacoma we really want? Yes I agree this show was a legacy, it ran for nearly 12 years. And its sad that its gone, it always is when something must move on or become a part of Tacoma’s history, I.e. kickstand Cafe. I have sat and chatted with the owners many times. They to tried to save it, yet it was just becoming more of a burden. In the last few weeks i noticed they had security and new employees. Sometimes you just can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Moving on! the remodel looks great the place looks awesome! I cant decide weather i dig the blues and Mexican combo, however its something new and different just like the time before. The food has under gone a few small changes. (Julie practically forced her husband Rod's chicken wings down my throat. Amazing! By the way.) All in all though the food is still top notch maybe a bit better. Now on to you Ed. I find your approach a bit shameful. You managed to turn two hard working parents into this big bad wolf. And slightly hinted at racism, which I also find outrageous. It wouldn’t hurt to take a closer look, hell maybe even go down and listen to some jazz and eat some dinner. I’m sure if you had an open mind you could see the good this place can bring. Hey here’s an idea, lets celebrate Mexico’s independence day there!!! I mean we cram our Asses into every other Irish pup on Saint Patrick’s Day. So lets not pull the exploitation card sir. On a good note Welcome, Gringo Del Locos!!!!

How about "the crazy cracker", a new place featuring dim sum and country music?

"Soul Sushi"

Come up with your own combo and go for it.

You know, I was in the second or third grade when the hispanic lobby took away my Frito Bandito pencil eraser. I'm still a little raw about it. The Bandito was a friend of mine and we crunched many a Frito together.

But I dunno if 'Gringo de Loco' is offensive, self deprecating or not. It doesn't seem to bug me so I guess not. To me. But I may not get it because I'm not hispanic. We all sterotype. Half of comedy is based on sterotypes. I would reccomend against 'white trash burger' though, even if it did make me laugh. Intelectually I can understand someone taking offense at stereotypes, but over sensitivity can do just as much harm I think.

Incongruous restaurant concepts however, do bug me. Might work out if the decision to go this route was not so random as it seems. Maybe the owner has his finger on the pulse of the neigborhood. Maybe he is the leader in a new trend, of food/ambiance fusion.

Meh.

Ha ha..... are chickens feelings hurt by el pollo loco?
I heard they were getting together a support group.

C'mon people, sometimes we all just have to laugh at ourselves.

There's whole long thread about whether a sleeping Mexican statue is offensive here:
http://ask.metafilter.com/72785/Sleeping-latino-statue-offensive

Personally, I'll go with "this makes you look clueless, culturally insensitive and semiotically illiterate."

I would say that 90% of the people in the world probably think that semiotics are something that you take when you are sick.

leejordan2003, I don't think the words you are attributing to Ed were actually his if you reread the blurb.

I have erased many paragraphs on how I think excessive cultural sensitivity leads to sanatization of culture because as important as I think it is for us as a culture to talk about race, this is a food blog and not a soapbox.

Thanks torinaga we frequently need to be reminded that this is supposed to be a FOOD BLOG not a B*&^% Blog!

On that note, are the tortillas and salsa house made? How is the mole and arroz con pollo? And nothing is better than a well made tamale. Lets hear about the food, the owners will learn soon enough if they made a serious error in name and signage.

I agree toringa, all Ed really did was suggest that the new owners might want to, " butcher the day that commemorates the Mexican army's victory over French forces," even though there didnt seem to be any reason to think that. Oh yeah, he also told us how much he would miss the drag shows. I think the reason this FOOD BLOG got off track might be because Ed's food review didn't review any food...lol

I'll write about Gringo de Loco's food once I've had a chance to eat more than one lunch at the restaurant.
Permalink Comment by FoodSnob @ 21:52 - Tuesday, April 29th, 2008 Email
I have eaten in downtown Tacoma for 15+ years, many of those lunches at the La Costa. When I went to "La Costa" for lunch after the new owners took over I was very disappointed in the menu change. Yes, they did change the menu. Several of my favorites were missing. This so typical of Tacoma restaurant thinking.
"Oh, there's a restaurant that needs help, lets change the menu" WRONG!!
Very sad to see parts of the old menu disappear
