A few songs I've had in heavy rotation lately:

"Headline" Me'Shell Ndegeocello: Me'Shell Ndegeocello is my girl! And on her new album, "The World Has Made Me the Man of My Dreams" she weaves funk, jazz, rock and hip-hop (not to mention that silky voice) into a dreamy style that's all her own.

"Myth Takes" !!!: Speaking of acts with songs you'd like to buy if only you knew how to pronounce their names. This up-and-coming band (pronounced chk-chk-chk, for the record) reminds me of the groovier side of My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult – you know, without all the kitschy occult references.

"Tasmanian Pain Coaster" El-P feat. the Mars Volta: In a down year for hip-hop, El-P's "I'll Sleep When You're Dead" is a likely addition to my best albums of 2007 list. I love the vocal that Mars Volta's Cedric Bixler adds to the end of this track.

"Navy Nurse" The Fiery Furnaces: Jarring mid-song tempo and style changes that recall ADD. Non-sequitur packed lyrics that are about – uh – what exactly? The Furnaces are weird in ways that parallel the Bay Area's Deerhoof. Except the Furnaces' Eleanor Friedberger doesn't sing in the same little girl's falsetto as Deerhoof's Satomi Matsuzaki, which is a plus. Plus, as you can hear on this clip from the new album "Widow City," the Fiery Furnaces can rip off some monster riffs when they feel like it.

Did you hear Van Hunt is opening for your some of your girl's shows in Cali and Arizona? I'm flying down to catch her in Sacramento since she won't be coming to Seattle. (There's a Jazz Festival or something going on in Seattle and none of the venues she was looking at were available for the time that would've worked.)

It's been too long since 2001 when she last hit Seattle...

No, I hadn't really checked her tour dates since she wasn't coming up here, which is a bummer. One of my fondest Showbox memories was when Me'Shell headlined a few years back? When was that? Must have been around 2002, before the "Cookie" album came out. Alas, she wasn't nearly as polished when she played Bumbershoot after that album came out. And I seem to remember some older hippie types getting offended by the bluntness of some of the lyrics that deal with race.

I flew out and saw her in Sacramento, Portland, Chicago and finally Minneapolis. The New York band KUDU opened for her in Sacramento and Portland and stole the shows. When I saw her in Chicago and Minneapolis, KUDU's drummer was playing drums for her. Deantoni Parks. Remember that name. Best drummer I've ever seen. That said, all she did was play new material. Nothing pre-2007. Unless you count the two covers she did in Chicago and Minneapolis. You can hear many of the *new* songs (not on TWHMMTMOMD) on her official MySpace profile. Enjoy :)

Man, I should have gone down to Portland. I love checkin' out shows down there. Usually stay at the Jupiter and stick my head into the Doug Fir next door, regardless of what I'm there to see.

Hopefully, Me'Shell will make it to Seattle. I need to check and make sure she hasn't scheduled a tour date here while I wasn't paying attention.
