Before I write anything else about the Jonas Brothers’ headlining set at the Tacoma Dome Sunday night, I have to give a big shout out to “South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. They made my experience at the T-Dome far more bearable than expected, and at times pretty humorous.
I don't mean to hate on the Jo Bros. They seem like nice enough lads. But I’m the wrong gender and about two decades too old to get it. Their confectionary, Disney-sanctioned pop makes my eyes glaze over faster than melatonin, and many of the parental guardian types on site at the T-Dome Sunday feel the same way by the looks of things.
But tweeners fiend for the Jo Bros in a way that can't be cured without a trip to the ol' Schick Shadel (or, like, turning 16 and discovering emo.) And being reminded just how crazed those hormone-addled fans get at the mere mention of Nick, Kevin or Joe, and just how little the “South Park” guys had to exaggerate for their Jonas Brothers episode, was heeee-larious!
Click here to check out our photo gallery of what went down on Sunday. And bear with me as I try recall a few show highlights. My notepad is bit water-logged and smeared since a couple of the Jonases doused our section with foam. Um, yeah. ANd I was right in the line of fire. But here are a few things that come to mind, in lieu of legible notes:
Telling them apart: As a PSA for parents, here’s how to tell who's who. Nick is the shortest one. He’s also kind of the leader and the guy with the most talent. He plays guitar, piano and he banged out a mean drum solo during “Live to Party” (while we were getting foamed.) Plus, I've noticed he sings more and more like Michael Jackson every time I hear him. I was almost expecting high-pitched “eeh hees!” as the show went on Sunday night.
Joe mostly just sings. He’s also the dude who dumped Taylor Swift, hence the lines he sings about being done with “superstars” and “all the tears on her guitar” in “Much Better.” Kevin is slightly taller and he does crazy tornado spins while playing guitar.
Plus, there’s another Jonas in the wings if that's not enough. (What is this? The Wayans?) Though not on stage, baby bro, Frankie, sparked shrill squeals during a pre-performance trailer for “Ponyo,” an animated Disney film that features his voice. Got it? Got it.
Staging and frills: Sunday night’s show was delivered in the underrated “in the round” format, with the stage set up in the middle of the arena, so there wasn't a bad seat in the house. The main stage rotated slowly as the Jo Bros performed, and they bounced on a trampoline at one point.
However, the coolest spectacle by far found the Jo Bros performing inside a column of water with the lyrics from “Lovebug” and silhouettes of the band appearing in the downpour. Projections, I'm guessing? But cool! Even tech-savvy Trent Reznor doesn’t have one of those.
These boys have seriously parlayed: Nick rose out of the stage playing a white piano for syrupy medley of “Black Keys” and “A Little Bit Longer.” Then he went into an inspirational, mid-song monologue about how he learned that he had diabetes and how he didn’t let adversity slow him down. This week alone, he pointed out, he met President Barack Obama, scored another No. 1 album with “Lines, Vines and Trying Times” and wound up on the cover of Rolling Stone. Again.
“You tell me, how has it slowed me down?” he shouted to big cheers. OK, we’re inspired and stuff. But, jeez, is one of the side effects of diabetes shameless boasting? Just sayin'.
Support acts: I arrived at the Dome in time to catch “American Idol” alumnus Jordin Sparks paying homage to Michael Jackson as she and her band performed Jacko’s smash “P.Y.T.” (Had many of the shorties on site even recognize this song? I dunno, but they seemed to like it.) Sparks later returned during the Jo Bros set to sing lead on “Battlefield.”
Honor Society and Wonder Girls also added support. The latter, a girl group from South Korea, “sang” one of their songs right before the Jonas Brothers went on. Though I’m not sure they needed the head sets until they pimped their new single after they performed it.
Who needs a geography lesson? Papa Jonas who made an appearance and kept saying how happy he and the boys were about returning to Seattle. If memory serves, the boys haven't played Seattle yet. They've played Tacoma and Puyallup in this market. Several times. If you're gonna kiss up to the crowd, know where you actually are, dude.
Wow! I'm really vexed by that. I must finally be a full-fledged Tacoman after all these years. Or maybe it's just lingering annoyance from how "America's Got Talent" is pretending we're Seattle.
