Well, you probably already checked out "Hell Yeah," which I posted as Grit City Bootleg No. 17. And now here's another cut that's sure to be on Atomic Outlaws' set list when T-town's hottest band plays KISW-FM's Pain in the Grass concert Saturday at White River Amphitheatre.

Politics don't normally fall on my beat here at the Trib, the occasional interview with Tom Morello or Chuck D aside. But radio does, and recently I took a trip up to the studios of Seattle's KPTK-AM (1090) to hang out with talk show host Ron Reagan, whose Ron Reagan show is taking off in Air America markets across the country. And of course I had to ask about the late papa Ron Reagan. Here's a bit of that conversation, and you'll be able to check out a related feature I wrote in the Sunday (Aug. 16) SoundLife section.

The CD release party for KPLU-FM's compilation "KPLU School of Jazz - Volume 5" has been called off due to performers' scheduling conflicts, according to station promotions director Brenda Goldstein-Young. The show was set for May 17 at Seattle's Museum of History and Industry. The CD will be released on May 19.

You know, I was meaning to post something on this announcement over the weekend, but it slipped my mind as I was fooling around with my Girl Trouble bootlegs. By "this Monday" ol' Eddie Spaghetti actually means yesterday, by the way. So you can tune in tomorrow morning to hear the guy, who will be on the air through Friday (March 20).

From the Supersuckers fan letter:

We here at Supersuckers Industries are pleased to announce the network broadcasting debut of none other than our very own Mr. Eddie Spaghetti! That's right, the afore mentioned lead singer of the Greatest Rock-N-Roll Band In The World will be making his presence known in the world of radio as he takes to the airwaves starting this Monday from 6 to 9 a.m. on Seattle's own, 107.7, The End.

You will be able to hear him struggle his way through the morning shift all week long as he will be taking a stab at being a "real morning jock", starting Monday, March 16th and running through to Friday the 20th. So make sure and set your alarm to wake up at the crack of dawn to hear what may just turn out to be commercial suicide for this Seattle radio station and the public shaming of one of your favorite artists.

The End's promotions director Joe Hammill tells me more celebrity guest DJs will rotate into that morning slot in the weeks to come.

I was listening to a radio show early this morning that mentioned Tom Leykis being fired. After calling Leykis' producer Gary Zabransky and going to voicemail, I checked The Los Angeles-based shock jock's web site. And it said that today's episode of the Tom Leykis Show will, indeed, feature the final installment of Leykis 101, the on air class for men about "how to get the most tail for the least amount of money."

The web site for KISW-FM (99.9), which has aired Leykis since 2005, confirmed the show's end with this explanation:

The long and short of this is that Tom’s home station, KLSX in L.A. will change format Today, Friday 2.20 at 5pm, and his syndication company Westwood One has ceased distribution of the show, unfortunately leaving Tom a man with a show and no place to broadcast it from.

Tom Leykis enjoyed a great stay in Seattle on KQBZ and KISW for well over 10 years. And we wish him the very best.

Starting Monday on KISW from 10pm to 2am you will hear the Grindhouse after Jolene.

"All questions will be answered beginning today at 5," according to Leykis site, likely referring to the time of the format switch. Of course, Seattle listeners will have to wait a few hours longer to hear if Leykis has any parting words about what went down. His show used to air live on KQBZ-FM (The Buzz, 1007) until that station went country as KKWF-FM, "The Wolf," and Entercom moved him to nights on KISW. Seattle was one of Leykis' strongest markets, and a healthy chunk of his calls came from Puget Sound before the switch.

In a related story, today is also the last day Entercom's KNDD-FM (The End, 107.7) will have the Adam Carolla Show, another guy-oriented, syndicated shock show that's gotten the axe. Sources report that Carolla will continue to podcast from his site.

Saliva had to pull out of the headlining slot for KISW's Deep Fried Double Wide Holiday Hangover Ball after singer Josey Scott was hospitalized for an irregular heartbeat and will be replaced by Queensryche Friday night at Seattle's Showbox SoDo, according to a press release sent out by event organizer KISW-FM (99.9).

The release included this statement from Saliva's management:

We're regretful to announce that Saliva will not be able to perform at KISW's 2008 Holiday Hangover due to an unexpected health scare of lead singer Josey Scott. He was hospitalized Monday evening due to an irregular heartbeat.

The band was scheduled to depart for the nationally syndicated radio show Rockline when Scott noticed a fluttering in his heart that didn't seem right. The paramedics were called and he was taken to a local hospital where he spent the next four nights. His diagnosis was cardiac arrhythmia, which in some cases can be life threatening. His heartbeat was stabilized Wednesday afternoon and is under doctor's orders for several days of no travel and rest.

The band prides themselves to be a hard working act who has rarely ever missed a performance. They apologize to the fans in the Seattle area for this unfortunate situation. There will definitely be a make up show in 2009.

Queensryche will perform a rare acoustic set at Friday night's event, which will also include performances by Duff MacKagan’s Loaded and Jet Black Stare.

Saliva fans should hold onto their tickets afterward, because they will also be good for Saliva's return to Seattle, once Scott's health permits, according to the KISW release.

As many of you know by now, Death Cab for Cutie is among the main attractions coming to WaMu Theatre for The End's Deck the Hall Ball Tuesday. I’ve already posted a related clip of Death Cab bassist Nick Harmer – the band’s lone South Sounder, from Puyallup -- talking about his band’s forthcoming EP. (Click here if you missed it.) And now you can click on the link below to hear the guy talk about Barsuk Record’s 10th anniversary reissue of Death Cab's debut album, “Something About Airplanes,” the included live recording of the band's first Seattle show and tentative plans to do a proper, headlining Seattle show before this tour cycle ends. Weird to think they haven't done their own headlining show in Seattle this year considering how many times they've played close to home, huh. And in between Nick's bits are clips of familiar song from that live CD, which was recorded at the currently defunct but soon to re-open Crocodile Cafe.

There's exciting news for Death Cab for Cutie fans. This morning, I called up bassist Nick Harmer just before he headed to sound check in Baton Rouge, La. And Harmer, who hails from Puyallup, gave me the skinny on a forthcoming E.P. of “Narrow Stairs” session outtakes that he said will likely be released in Spring 2009.

The just finished and as yet unnamed EP consists of songs that just didn’t quite fit the musical arc the band wanted to create on its last full-length album, Harmer said. “We still wanted them to have a home, and we still wanted them to come out during this album cycle because they are part of this batch of songs,” he said.

Harmer said the EP will feature five to six new cuts, including two called “Diamond in a Tether” and “Loyal Lover” that he named off the top of his head, and a demo of "Narrow Stairs" cut “Talking Bird,” featuring front man Ben Gibbard playing ukulele.

Sadly, none of those songs will be on the set list next Tuesday when Death Cab plays The End’s Deck the Hall Ball at WaMu Theatre. But fans should expect a couple of old school cuts from the band’s Bellingham days to celebrate Barsuk Records’ 10th anniversary reissue of debut album “Something About Airplanes.”

Check back in the next couple of days, and I’ll have some more audio and details posted.
