Today, I come bearing not one, not two but three new F-ing Eagles songs, all in one handy, 8-minute clip. This video is from the band's set last Friday at Hell's Kitchen (more here.) And the CD release party for the band's killer new album, "Midnight Sour," is set for Friday (Aug. 21) at the New Frontier Lounge.
I had my video camera handy Saturday night during the official after party for Music and Art in Wright Park, during which Tacoma garage-rock torchbearers the F***ing Eagles unveiled tracks from their new "Midnight Sour" album. The official CD release party is Friday (Aug. 21) at the New Frontier Lounge. And I'm guessing they might have these new cut on the set list. And they'll also have bassist Kelly Michelson back after he was AWOL working on some day job related project. His former roomie, Seaweed's Wade Neal, filled in nicely, though. And it was his birthday. Send him late b-day wishes here then check out the video. And check back. I've got a few more to post.
For those who missed Dick Dale's amazing guitar clinic Saturday night at Hell's Kitchen, here's the finale. (Two guesses on what song he finished with before you click on the video. Just think "Pulp Fiction." You know, the song Black Eyed Peas ruined.)
And just for kicks and giggles, I shot some footage of Tacoma's favorite garage-punk outfit, Girl Trouble, too; if for no other reason, so you could check out singer K.P. Kendall's sexy dance moves. Woot! This clip features the solid one-two punch of "Bring on the Dancing Girls" and Grit City anthem "My Hometown," which they played as their set wound down.
I was chatting up F-ing Eagles bassist Kelly Mickelson the other night at Top of Tacoma, and he tells me the follow up to his band's debut, "A Million Dollars Worth of Music," is all set to drop this summer. I went to the F-ing Eagles' MySpace page for more details. Here's how they put it in a blog post from last week:
Hiyo! We'll be finishing up our new record over the summer gunning for an August 2009 release...lots of new songs! It's called Midnight Sour and it's a concept record! Holy bad ideas! Sheesh, anyho we'll be doing a few shows here and there but generally holding off on playing to get this fiasco out. Come fall we'll be out and about and all up in your bananer. We do however have a big hurkin' Tacoma record release party planned for August 21st at the New Frontier w/ our exotic foreign friends Thee Manipulators (from Canadia!), Pure Country Gold (from Portland!), The Party Line (Wash, DC - with Alison Wolfe origgginal rrriot grrrrl (Bratmobile!)), and Night Hair (PDX). Massive no?
So save yer ducats and mark it on the calendar, people.
I was just talking to the Galaxies' Chuck Naubert for a story I'm working on, and he pointed out a little event up in Seattle that had slipped under my radar. (Yeah, shame on me!) That would be the book launch part for rock photographer Jini Dellaccio, the 92-year-old Gig Harbor native who chronicled the rise of the original Northwest Sound. Members of the Sonics, the Wailers and more will take part in a musical tribute. Find more specifics here.
I've been meaning to pass along some tidbits of information I've been learning about the Ventures, Fabulous Wailers show that's coming up at the Moore on April 10. For starters, I've confirmed that Lt. Gov. Brad Owen will jump on stage with the Ventures to play sax on a couple of songs. (Learn more about his band connections here. Plus, the April 10 show will actually be the kickoff for a world tour. A related announcement is expected to fill in the details on all of that, a forthcoming documentary and the new "Two Car Garage" CD, next Tuesday.
Little Bill Engelhart is a Tacoma legend since, among other things, he and the Bluenotes pretty much started the rock scene as we know it in these parts, way back in the mid-50s. And considering how influential the bands that followed in Little Bill & the Bluenotes’ wake were (the likes of the Ventures, the Sonics and the Fabulous Wailers), Engelhart indirectly helped launch rock scenes in a bunch of other places, too. So, just to get you in the mood for the Little Bill tribute that’s scheduled for Saturday (March 28) at the Rialto, here’s a clip of the big guy playing “Louie Louie” at Jambalaya in Parkland last fall.
Just got a tip on the sorts of special guests that may show up for the historic Ventures/Fabulous Wailers show coming up April 10 at Seattle's Moore Theatre. (Ticket info here. A source close to the bands tells me that Gail Harris, who sang with the Fabulous Wailers in theirs '60s heyday and occasionally since then, will be reunite with her old band onstage.
And apparently the Ventures' Don Wilson is homies with actors Steven Seagal and Billy Bob Thornton, who are rumored to be on the guest list. You know, in case ruckus breaks breaks out during the meet-and-greet and somebody needs a kung-fu butt whoopin'.
P.S. I was gonna hold off until a related story I'm working on runs in the paper, but I think I'll actually start posting some interview clips in the next few days. Bookmark and check back.
Speaking of the Wailers, was looking online for something else when I stumbled across this clip of The Wailers' "Hang Up" set to footage from some kitschy flick called "The Astro-Zombies." Now I've gotta find "Astro-Zombies." Which means I may have to pay all my late fees over at Stadium Video.
Remember that Sonics concert DVD that's been in the works for the last year and a half or so? Well, Buck Ormsby -- the Sonics' manager when he's not playing bass for his own band, the Fabulous Wailers -- gave me an update the other day when he was up in Seattle recording interviews for the project.
The Wailers/Ventures biz he mentions as the clip fades out is, of course, related to the bands' forthcoming split CD "Two Car Garage" and the CD release party set for April 10 at the Moore in Seattle.
Those 50th anniversary shows for the Ventures and the Wailers I mentioned on Jan. 8? Well, the first one looks like it will take place on April 10 in Seattle, with the details being finalized as we speak. Leonard Haggarty of Tacoma's Blue Horizon records also tells me that "Two Car Garage," the new album featuring both influential Tacoma bands, will be out soon. No kidding this time. The release has been slightly delayed as the label works on its promotional web site and aspects of the packaging, he said. Stay tuned.
As you Stooges fans out there may have already heard or read elsewhere, guitarist Ron Asheton was found dead at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan last night. Read the Rolling Stone report here.
Sad news for sure, but I'm glad that I at least had the privilege of catching up with Ron before the Stooges' comeback tour brought the infamous and highly influential outfit to Seattle in 2007. Click here to listen to what he had to say on that day about his band's legacy, being a musical outsider and hooking back up with Iggy Pop and brother, Scott, for the tour in '07.
