I've been slacking on the posts this week since I’m taking a few days off before summer concert season heats up. But I couldn’t go without posting a few clips from my interview with comedian Daniel Whitney, a.k.a. Larry the Cable Guy, a.k.a. the main attraction Friday night (May 15) at the Tacoma Dome. Click on the links below to hear the “Get R’ Done” guy talk about …
… when he realized he had a hit with Larry …
… the stories behind his blue collar catch phrases.
Read more in Friday's GO section. Now back to loafing and watching "The Office."
Bill Engvall headlined the Tacoma Dome in December. And in May, his Blue Collar buddy Larry the Cable Guy will take a crack at T-town's biggest venue. His Eat, Drink & Be Larry Tour will drop in on the T-Dome on May 15, the Tacoma Dome announced today.
Tickets will go for $35.75 to $55.75 beginning 10 a.m. Friday (March 27). Check here for more info.
This spring, Dane Cook will undergo a large scale arena comedy tour that includes a June 5 stop at Seattle’s KeyArena, the comedian’s publicist announced today.
Cook – who has starred in two popular HBO specials and movies “My Best Friend’s Girl,” “Mr. Brooks” and "Good Luck Chuck" – will launch his tour with a two-night stand in Uncasville, Conn., on April 5 and 6.
Ticket are $30 to $100, and Ticketmaster will start selling them to the general public at 5 p.m. Friday (March 13).
It's business, it's busiiinessss tiiiiime. Especially now that Kiwi comedy duo Flight of the Conchords headed to Seattle's Paramount Theatre on May 11 and 12. The duo's new tour coincides with the end of season two of their HBO TV series, and Arj Barker has been tapped to open. Tickets are $35 and go on sale at 10 a.m. on Saturday (Feb. 7). Check here for more details.
Comedian Lisa Lampanelli, a.k.a. the Lovable Queen of Mean, a.k.a. that woman you see dishing out the lowest blows on all those Comedy Central roasts, will bring her politically incorrect style of humor to Tacoma. She'll headline the Temple Theatre at 7 p.m. on April 3, Live Nation announced today. Tickets are $37.75 and will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday (Feb. 6). Find out more here.

You’ve seen Bill Engvall on “The Blue Collar Comedy Tour” and “The Bill Engvall Show.” And Saturday, the Texas-bred funny man will headline the Tacoma Dome with a set of homespun humor. Recently, I caught up with the guy for a phone interview, and here are a few clips:
Part 1: Getting in trouble for jokes about his family, his ties to Grit City
Part 2: His new material, empty nesting
Part 3: The complex he developed from Blue Collar Comedy
Get 'er dooooone! Wait, wrong Blue Collar dude.

"Hey, it's Paul Brogan coming live from Tacoma, Washington."
It's a familiar intro if you ever check out those hilarious sports raps from MySpace's super fan, a guy who allegedly resides here in Grit City. But I started to get suspicious when the guy claimed, in one clip, that his favorite players are Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant. Huhn? Whazzupwitdat? Didn't he say he was a Sonics fan?
So I did some cyber-sleuthing and came across this site, with contact info for hiring musical comedy duo Ben & Eric, who appear to be based in So Cal. The guy on that page, doing a "Barack, Paper, Scissors" routing, looks eerily like "Paul's" cooler twin brother, minus the specs and headband. Scandalous, I say! But still pretty durn funny. And, hey, maybe I'm just being cynical. Maybe the guy, located in Bakersfield in one of the clips below, moved up here. Any of you know 'em or seen him at your favorite local haunts?
I was just goofing off and thumbing through a promo copy of book called "Is It Just Me or Is Everything @#%@?" that Grand Central Publishing mailed our way. It's basically a snarky dictionary of stuff that hilariously cynical and mean-spirited authors Steve Lowe, Alan McArthur and Brendan Hay find insanely annoying. I know, why didn't any of us think of that? And lo and behold, what do I spy under "alt-country" but a hilarious Ryan Adams story I remember first reading about in a review a few years back.
Alt-country: Isn't hip-hop the real "alternative to country music? Regardless, here are some important facts about alt-country-singer-songwriter-whiny bastard Ryan Adams:
1. Add a B to the start of his name and you get "Bryan Adams."
2. Ryan Adams really hates this first fact.
At one gig in Nashville, an audience member satirically shouted for Bryan Adams's 1985 hit "Summer of '60." Ryan Adams singled out the offender and refused to paly another note until he left the venue. He even offered him $30 of his own money as a refund. IT's Bryan Adams I feel sorry for. No one should have to be associated with alt-country.
Hilarious! And the heckler due actually got his money back and went back in and watched the rest of Adams' show, if memory served me correctly.
Another thing I learned from this book, by the way, is that Diddy Day is officially recognized in Las Vegas. On May 14. And, yes, it's named after that guy.
If you follow "Scrubs," chances are you're familiar with Ted's Band, those a capella-singing weirdos that show up at random to sing about Underdog and baby back ribs. (Mmmm. Babyback ribs. And if you're not familiar, what are you waiting for? Click the YouTube clip for a quick primer.)
Well, they're actually a bona fide band consisting of actor Sam Lloyd (Ted from the show), Philip McNiven, George Miserlis and Paul Perry. The quartet will appear at University of Puget Sound's Schneebeck Concert Hall on Sunday (Nov. 9) under their real world moniker, the Blanks. So recently, I caught up with the quirky foursome for a conference call that was about as goofy as you'd expect. Here are some highlights.
Pt. 1: Man! Philip's connection really sucks!
Pt. 2: Their big break and how "Superman's" lawyers nearly ruined it.
Pt. 3: So when's that next (possibly last) season of "Scrubs" gonna air, again?
Serni Solidarios, the student programs director over at UPS, sent me this show update this afternoon:
The temporary closure of the UPS Fieldhouse is going to benefit all ticketholders for the Colin Mochrie & Brad Sherwood “Whose Line Is It Anyway” show (Sept. 27) because they will now get to enjoy it in the cozy Schneebeck Concert Hall. The 8pm show is nearly sold out, and a second show will then be added at 930. Tickets are still available for the public through all Ticketmaster locations.
Funnyman Robin Williams will headline Seattle's Paramount Theatre for two shows at 8 p.m. on Dec. 5 and 6, Live Nation announced today. His Weapons of Self-Destruction tour will be William's first cross-country trek since 2002.
“It’s an election year, which is basically Christmas for stand-up comics,” Williams is quoted as saying in a related press release. “And I figured I should get my ass on the road while the Shrub is still in office. A lot has happened in the world and in my life since I last did this six years ago and there’s no better thrill and no better therapy than getting on that high-wire in front of a live audience.”
Tickets are $50 to $95 and will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday (Sept. 19). Click the Live Nation like above or check Ticketmaster for further details.
So on a scale of one to 10, how shocked were you all when you found out that Bernie Mack died today? He'll be missed. And life is short, y'all. Do what you gotta do while you're still here.
