The United States Men's Amateur championship is the oldest of any USGA championship, played since 1895. Participants have to have a 2.4 handicap or better.

This year's tournament is being played Aug. 18-24 at Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 4 in North Carolina.

Here are capsules of the local products – Tacoma's T.J. Bordeaux, Olympia's Cameron Peck, University Place's Andrew Putnam and Gig Harbor's Kyle Stanley:

This week: PGA Tour's Legends Reno-Tahoe Open, Thursday through Sunday, Montreux Golf and Country Club, Reno, Nev.

First-round score: Even-par 72.

Position: Moore is tied for 55th, seven strokes behind leader Jeff Overton (65).

Recap: The Puyallup product had it to 2-under after sinking an 18-foot birdie putt on the par-3 12th, but finished up with bogeys on Nos. 13 and 16. He finished with 30 putts.

Tee time Friday: 7:23 a.m. PDT off the 10th tee.

This week: Nationwide Tour's Cox Classic, Thursday through Sunday, Champions Run, Omaha. Neb.

First-round score: 4-under-par 67.

Position: Putnam is tied for 21st, four strokes behind leader D.A. Points (63)

Recap: Once again, the Tacoma golfer was a birdie-making machine – his seven ranks No. 2 in the field. Oddly enough, none of his birdies came on par-5s. He did double bogey the par-4 second hole, one of the few holes where he did not hit the green in regulation (hit 15 of 18 in his round).

Tee time Friday: 11:05 a.m. PDT off the 10th tee.

This week: PGA Tour's Legends Reno-Tahoe Open, Thursday through Sunday, Montreux Golf and Country Club, Reno, Nev.

World ranking: 90th.

2008 earnings: $1,116,001 (63rd on the PGA Tour).

Last tournament: The Puyallup golfer missed out on qualifying for the British Open, and his last-ditch effort to be the highest finisher at the John Deere Classic (tied for 74th at 2-over 286) to get into the British Open was not a success. So, he took a couple weeks off to get ready for the home stretch, and has been working out with a new caddie who has continued to help with Moore's overall fitness level.

Tee time Thursday: 12:23 p.m. PDT off the first tee with Glen Day and Mark Hensby.

Tee time Thursday: 6:05 a.m. PDT off the first tee with Gary Christian and Todd Fischer.

Jacob Meyer reacted like any shocked golfer would. He jogged up to the hole, peeked in and raised his hands, celebrating the rare feat of a hole-in-one.

Did we mention Meyer is just 9 years old?

Meyer, who enters the fourth grade at Crescent Heights Elementary School in Tacoma, sent his hybrid iron on the par-3 sixth hole at Oakbrook Golf and Country Club right on the green July 17 as he played nine holes with his grandparents and sister, Taylor, who is 6.

The hole was playing 125 yards that day. Nobody knew how good the shot was until the group reached the green. Meyer hurried to the sand trap to see if his ball went too long. He didn't find it there. So he immediately went to the hole.

"I jumped up and down, and screamed," he said.

Meyer became the youngest member at Oakbrook to record an ace, eclipsing the previous mark. Amy Clancy (presently an anchor at KIRO-7) was 11 when she made hers in the early 1980s.

"Right away, Jacob called his dad and said, 'I got a hole-in-one,'" said Dennis Meyer, the child's grandfather.

Meyer is trying to keep his golf goals modest: "I want three or four of them," he said of more holes-in-one.

This week: Nationwide Tour's Children's Hospital Invitational, Ohio State University's Scarlet Golf Course, Columbus, Ohio.

Fourth-round score: 1-under-par 70.

Position: Putnam (2-under 282) finished tied for sixth, three strokes behind winner Bill Lunde (279).

Recap: The Tacoma native saved the fireworks for the final round (six birdies, five bogeys). He was 1-over on his round, but finished with a bang – back-to-back birdies on the final two holes to move up nine spots on the leaderboard. His six birdies doubled his output for the first three rounds, and he notched his best finish of the season – and second top-10 in 2008.

Quotable: "For a month, I've been hitting the ball pretty well, and things are starting to come around. Like I said, this week was a little bittersweet – I feel like I should have won by five shots the way I was hitting it. It is a ball-strikers golf course. I dominated the course, tee to green."

"Top 10s go a long way, but I need to get a win. I'm on the Nationwide Tour for a reason, and that's to win."

Next: Cox Classic starting Thursday at Champions Run in Omaha, Neb.

Here is my story for The News Tribune's Sunday section. Peck is the third Washington golfer to win this championship:

The field was packed of accomplished teenage golfers, but before the start of this week's U.S. Junior Amateur, defending champion Cory Whitsett had his sights set on one main rival.

It was Olympia's Cameron Peck.

By the start of the 36-hole championship match Saturday, Whitsett was nowhere to be found – he had been eliminated in the first round.

That Peck fella? Well, he was on his way to capturing the 61st U.S. Junior Amateur at Shoal Creek Golf Club in Alabama.

The to-be Timberline High senior not only defeated Virginia's Cameron Beck, he overwhelmed his opponent, and posted the largest margin of victory in the championship's history – a 10-and-8 win.

"This is a tournament," an exhausted Peck said afterward, "that might change my life."

Peck became the third Washington golfer to win one of the United States Golf Association's national championships. Spokane's Larry Lee, a public-course golfer, captured the 1959 Junior Am title at the Stanford University golf course, and Seattle's Bill Tindall followed that up with a victory a year later in Overland Park, Kan.

Puyallup's Ryan Moore got to the 2000 Junior Am finals on the Ghost Course at Pumpkin Ridge near Portland, but lost 3-and-2 to Matthew Rosenfeld.

This week: Children's Hospital Invitational, today through Sunday, The Ohio STate University Scarlet Course, Columbus, Ohio.

Third-round score: Even-par 71.

Position: Putnam (1-under 212) is tied for 15th, six strokes behind leader Bill Lunde (206).

Recap: Tee to green, the Tacoma native is having a fantastic showing – he is ranked fourth in driving accuracy (76.2 percent) and tied for eighth in greens hit in regulation (72.2 percent). The reason he is keeping his position at 1-under is putts – he had 32 on Saturday. Putnam did make back-to-back birdies at Nos. 15 and 16 to offset earlier bogeys. He is one of 28 golfers under-par for the tournament.

Tee time Sunday: 7:45 a.m. PDT with Tommy Tolles.

Here is an early story from the USGA:

Olympia's Cameron Peck became the 61st U.S. Junior Amateur champion, in record-setting fashion, when he trumped Evan Beck, 17, of Virginia Beach, Va., 10-and-8 on Saturday as the largest margin of victory ever.

Five others in the past have won 9 and 8.

"That makes it even better," Peck said. "To win the U.S. Junior Amateur, I also set a record. That's pretty cool."

The match ended on the 28th hole. Beck was unsuccessful in coverting an up and down before taking his hat off to congratulate Peck. After two weather delays, most of the match was played in a steady downpour.

It didn't bother Peck.

"I don't think it has sunk in quite yet," said Peck of the victory. "I think I'm still in shock."

Details come from a United States Golf Association writer on site of the 61st U.S. Junior Amateur in Shoal Creek, Ala.:

They are the same age – 17 years old.

They almost have the same last name.

And Olympia's Cameron Peck, and Virginia's Evan Beck will fight it out for the 61st U.S. Junior Amateur champion at Shoal Creek, Ala.

The 36-hole championship match will start at 6 a.m. PDT today.

Peck had the more dramatic outing in the semifinals. The Timberline High product won the last two holes of regulation to tie his match against 17-year-old Dominic Bozzelli, then made par on the 20th hole to sew up the victory.

In fact, with eight holes to play, Peck was 3-down in his match.

The pivotal shot came on the par-5 17th when he hit his second shot – a 4-iron – from 205 yards out on the green, and two-putted for birdie.

"I knew it was either do or die on 17," said Peck. "I knew he was probably going to make at least a par there. And when I won hole 18 I said, 'I’m finally even and I have a chance.'"

This week: Nationwide Tour's Children's Hospital Invitational, Thursday through Sunday, Ohio State University's Scarlet Golf Course, Columbus, Ohio.

Second-round score: 1-over-par 72.

Position: Putnam (1-under 141) is tied for 17th, four strokes behind leader Peter Tomasulo (137).

Recap: The Tacoma native has spent the past month carving up some of the nicest layouts on the Nationwide Tour as one of the birdie-making leaders on tour. This week, he's been steady – 29 pars and four birdies. His 29 pars are No. 2 in the field. Putnam birdied the third hole to get to 3-under for the tournament, and one shot off the lead, but fell back after back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11.

Tee time Saturday: 8:25 a.m. PDT with Bubba Dickerson.

This report from a United States Golf Association writer on site of the 61st U.S. Junior Amateur in Shoal Creek, Ala.:

Fourteen-year-old Jordan Spieth of Dallas, Texas, moved a step closer Friday to becoming the youngest champion in the history of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. He won his morning quarterfinal match over Andrew Yun of Chandler, Ariz., 3 and 2, and now will face Evan Beck, 17, of Virginia Beach, Va., in his afternoon semifinal match.

Spieth, who is playing match play for the first time, never trailed against Yun, and held a 4-up lead after nine holes.

"I almost let him back in it," said Spieth, who is looking to unseat Tiger Woods as the youngest champion in the event’s 61-year history. "I was fortunate that he didn’t have enough holes left. I knew he would make a charge. I just wanted to be ahead by enough that it wouldn’t matter."

Woods was 15 years old when he won the first of his three consecutive Junior titles in 1991.

Advertisement and truth can paint two different shades of color.

For months, organizers of the inaugural 2008 American Amateur Championship (AAC), which takes place starting Thursday around the South Sound, claim this all-handicap, four-round event will be held on the best courses in the Northwest.

The courses?

Chambers Bay Golf Course, site of the 2015 U.S. Open. That is a big go-ahead for the AAC's final round Sunday.

Gold Mountain Golf Complex, which hosted the 2008 NCAA West Regional tournament and 2006 U.S. Public Links (except the AAC will go to the older Cascade Course, not the higher-profile Olympic Course).

The Classic Golf Club, home to Puyallup's PGA Tour hopeful Ryan Moore and host to select USGA events.

Two of the top Scott Oki-owned courses – Trophy Lake Golf and Casting and Hawks Prairie – are in the rotation as well. So is McCormick Woods.

But if you've been tracking this event for months, and visiting the AAC's Website (http://americanamgolf.com/index.html), you'd know other courses have not only been mentioned, they've been profiled.

What happened to Oakbrook Golf and Country Club? Fell through.

And Auburn Golf Course? Not going.

Both parties hoped all along to reunite what was a huge success: Returning the BMW Northwest Skins game to Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place.

And they worked all of that out last week to make that happen.

Thought to be held at host Ryan Moore's home course – The Classic Golf Club – the second annual skins game will, indeed, go back to the site of the 2015 U.S. Open on Sept 13.

"That is where we wanted it all along," said Jeremy Moore, the brother of the PGA Tour golfer, and partner in Moore Sports Management. "It's the right venue, and a fantastic place for spectators.

"We had been working on the conflict for quite a while, and got it resolved last week."

The skins game will tee off at Chambers Bay at 9 a.m. on Sept 13. Moore, Australian Aaron Baddeley, Floridian Bubba Watson and fellow Northwest native Ben Crane will partake in the event.

The pro-am, and junior clinic will still be held Sept. 12 at The Classic in Spanaway.

Tickets for the skins game will be $20, and will be on sale starting Aug. 1 – online at nwgolf.org, or over the counter at The Classic or select Pro Golf Discount stores in the area.

First, a "Big Break" title.

Now, a women's professional tournament championship.

The past two weeks for Kim Welch, a former standout golfer from Washington State University, who was crowned the champion of The Golf Channel's reality-television show, "Big Break Ka'anapali" has been a flurry of action, to say the least.

Welch, a native of Sacramento, clinched the Duramed Futures Tour's Alliance Bank Golf Classic on Sunday in a four-hole playoff in Syracuse, N.Y.

Welch edged out Jin Young Pak (71) of Kang Leung, South Korea, and overcame separate weather delays to claim a $12,600 check and finish the tournament at 9-under par 204.

On the fourth playoff hole, Welch stuck a gap wedge from 107 yards out to about six feet from the pin as Pak faced an 18-foot putt. Left with an uphill putt with slight break, she left her birdie putt short, but tapped in her par attempt and put the pressure on Pak, who lipped out to give Welch the victory.

"I'm so excited and really proud of myself," Welch said. "I've known all year that I could do it and now that the season is coming down to the end, I knew I had to get a win to try and get into the top five."

When it came down to making birdies on a course open for many of them, Jeff Coston made one more than the rest of the field.

Coston closed with a 4-under-par 67 to overcome Ryan Benzel and win his third Rosauers Open Invitational title at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane.

The longtime club professional from Semiahmoo Golf Resort near Blaine finished at 14-under 199, a stroke ahead of Benzel, who had a final-round 72. Coston won $11,000 for first place.

With his win, Coston became the all-time leading winner of this event, claiming his third title and breaking the tie of two titles with Greg Whisman. Coston also won in 1997 and 2006.

Defending champion Cody Upham, an amateur from Portland, finished tied for 51st at 212.

Tacoma's Derek Barron (201) was tied for third, and the tournament's low amateur. He is a graduate of Emerald Ridge High School, and recently placed third in the Tacoma City Amateur.

The Rosauers has been taking place since 1988, and has donated more than $1.5 million to local charities.

The Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. – Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley overcame an eight-shot deficit over the final two rounds, then birdied the first playoff hole to win his second Southern Amateur on Saturday.

The Clemson junior and former Bellarmine Prep standout finished at 14-under, tied with Mike Van Sickle, but holed a 35-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole at Lake Nona Country Club.

“I can hardly describe the feeling,” said Stanley, who joined Bobby Jones, Lanny Wadkins and Justin Leonard among those who have won the storied tournament more than once. “That’s such an honor to join that list.”

Stanley, who won the Southern Amateur two years ago in Birmingham, birdied the final hole to finish off a round of 6-under 66 and set up the playoff.

His birdie on the first extra hole also assured him a spot in the PGA Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational next spring.

George Bryan of South Carolina, Matt Savage of Florida State, and Australian Tim Stewart were two shots back at 12-under 276. Bryan tied the Lake Nona course record with a 9-under 63, becoming the first amateur to go that low.

Blake Trimble of San Diego had lowered the amateur mark to 64 on Friday. He finished in a tie for seventh, four shots off the lead.

A trip to Seattle is no longer necessary.

Next week, Tacoma will debut its own golf show.

Spokane-based "Par 5 Events" is not only bringing the American Amateur Championship to 10 courses in the South Sound, the casual golfer will have an opportunity to shop for equipment deals, get tips on the game and win rounds of golf.

The 2008 Tacoma Golf Show – or the "19th Hole" of the AAC – will take place for three days starting next Friday at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center in downtown Tacoma.

Daily adult tickets are $8, and children 13-and-under are $6. A three-day adult pass is $12, and for children, it is $10.

Here is a cool catch: Every person who purchases a ticket will have a chance to win a free round of golf at Mount Si Golf Resort, Auburn Golf Course, Port Ludlow Golf Resort, Dungeness and possibly at Chambers Bay Golf Course by participating in a spin-the-wheel game (limit two spins per day).

The schedule for the golf show is 4-6 p.m. Friday (July 25), 10-6 p.m. Saturday (July 26) and 11-4 p.m. Sunday (July 27). To purchase tickets, or need information, call (509) 456-7275, or visit the Website at www.americanamgolf.com/TacomaGolfShow.html

This week: Nationwide Tour's Price Cutter Charity Championship, today through Sunday, Highland Springs Country Club, Springfield, Mo.

Second-round score: 1-under-par 71.

Position: Putnam (7-under 137) is tied for 23rd, six strokes behind leader Colt Knost (131).

Recap: Five birdies on his first nine holes – three converted from tap-in putting distance – and the Tacoma native was in the lead alone at 11-under for the tournament. Then, after his 3-iron approach on the par-5 first (his 10th hole) found the back fringe, he ended up taking four shots from there, and took a bogey. And then he made double bogey on the par-4 second after being in the middle of the fairway with a pitching wedge in his hand. "I gave away three shots, maybe four (on those two holes)," he said. Putnam said he's really starting to putt better – he had 28 putts for the second consecutive day. "Now I just need to clean up some of those bogeys," he said. He hit eight of 14 fairways Friday, and 10 of 18 greens in regulation.

This week: Nationwide Tour's Price Cutter Charity Championship, Thursday through Sunday, Highland Springs Country Club, Springfield, Mo.

First-round score: 6-under-par 66.

Position: Putnam is tied for third with eight other golfers, two strokes behind leader Colt Knost (64).

Recap: Stick around this sport long enough, and something rare happens. For the first time in competitive golf, the Tacoma native had two eagles in one round, which was the biggest reason he tied his best opening score of the season (shot 66 at the Athens Regional Foundation Classic in April). Putnam holed out his wedge approach from 115 yards out on the 400-yard, par-4 third, and eagled the par-5 11th. Putnam doubled his output on eagles this season – his only other one came in the final round of the Mexico Open in February. The last time Putnam eagled a par-4 hole was the third round of the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh.

Tee time Friday: 5:10 a.m. PDT off the 10th tee.

The secret finally got to come out, one that Kim Welch did not find all that difficult to keep quiet about.

Being tight-lipped about the conclusion of The Golf Channel's reality television show, "Big Break: Kaanapali" wasn't a big deal, even though family members in Sacramento inquired constantly about Welch's fate.

She kept surviving. And on the series finale July 8 (the show was taped in Hawaii in December), she won the whole bonanza by defeating France's Sophie Sandolo, 4-and-3, in 18 holes of match play at the Royal Course and Kai Course.

"I'm a good secret-keeper," Welch said Tuesday, the day before leaving for the Alliance Bank Golf Classic, the Duramed Futures Tour stop in Syracuse, N.Y.

"This was just fun for me. I turned it into something that was entertaining, because I told my family to bring their tissues every week."

This week: Nationwide Tour's Price Cutter Charity Championship, Thursday through Sunday, Highland Springs Country Club, Springfield, Mo.

World ranking: 549th.

2008 earnings: $61,730 (56th on the Nationwide Tour).

Last tournament: It's not only time to start thinking about Putnam's standing on the money list, it might be time to be anxious. Putnam is making cuts – he made his third in a row at last week's Nationwide Tour's Players Cup – but he needs a few top-10 finishes coming down the home stretch to shrink the gap between himself ($61,730) and the 25th-ranked Chris Anderson ($121,607), whom the Tacoma resident in grouped with for the first two rounds this week. The Life Christian Academy graduate is almost a full stroke higher on this season's scoring average (71.41) to his 2006 Nationwide Tour campaign (70.47).

Tee time Thursday: 10:10 a.m. PDT off the first tee with Anderson and Todd Fischer.

The 50-and-over folks, many of whom were yesteryear's stars on the PGA Tour, are entering the demanding stretch of their schedule – three major championships in five weeks – but do recognize some of the cool stops on the Champions Tour.

One of them is the increasingly popular Boeing Classic, which will enter its fourth year.

Anyway, the official "Media Day" for the 54-hole tournament was held Monday. Here is a quick-hit information chart about the event, plus some pre-tournament notes and observations.

BOEING CLASSIC

Where: TPC Snoqualmie Ridge (7,264 yards, par 72).

Defending champion: Denis Watson (9-under 279, defeated six other men in largest sudden-death playoff in professional golf history).

Schedule: The NFL's "Rumble at the Ridge" starts at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 18 (Monday), followed by Champions Tour practice rounds. … Champions Tour practice rounds continue on Aug. 19 (Tuesday) at 9 a.m., followed by a golf clinic. … The two-day Seahawks Pro-Am tournaments (Aug. 20-21) have the same 7:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. shotgun sessions. … Tee times for the tournament (Aug. 22-24) begin daily at 10 a.m., with action concluding at 6 p.m.

One of Kyle Stanley's favorite amateur tournaments is The Players Championship.

And it's an event he's come up a little short in.

He finished third twice in 2006 and 2007, and was just one stroke off the pace last weekend, but eventually settled for a tied-for-21st at 5-under-par 275 at Belfair Golf Club in Bluffton, S.C.

Mark Anderson won the title, closing with an incredible 10-under 60 on the East Course, which erased the course record of 63, held by three golfers, including Stanley.

"A 60 anywhere is pretty good," said Stanley on Tuesday. "I used to have the course record. I still have the other one."

Stanley, heading into his junior season up the road at Clemson, holds the West Course record (63), set in last year's final round of the Players Am.

He is playing in this week's Southern Amateur, then has the Western Amateur starting at the end of July. He'll take two weeks off to prepare for the U.S. Amateur in August at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina.

Tacoma teenager Andrew Yun, who captured the AJGA title at the Verizon Junior Heritage, got into the Players Amateur, and placed tied for 22nd at 276.

Last year: Ireland’s Padraig Harrington won at Carnoustie, beating Sergio Garcia in a four-hole playoff. Harrington lost a one-shot lead on the 72nd hole by twice hitting into the Barry Burn on his way to a double bogey.

Last week: Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell won the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond, beating South Africa’s James Kingston by two strokes. Ernie Els tied for ninth, and Phil Mickelson tied for 38th. … Kenny Perry won the John Deere Classic for his third PGA Tour victory in five starts. The 47-year-old Perry, skipping the major tournament to play in Milwaukee, beat Brad Adamonis and Jay Williamson with a par on the first playoff hole. Adamonis and Williamson hit into a greenside water hazard in the playoff.

Notes: Tiger Woods, sidelined by a knee injury, is missing the tournament for the first time since Turnberry in 1994. This week: PGA Tour's John Deere Classic, Thursday through Sunday, TPC Deere, Silvis, Ill.

Fourth-round score: 2-over-par 73.

Position: Moore (2-over 286) finished tied for 74th, 18 strokes behind Brad Adamonis, Kenny Perry and Jay Williamson (268). Perry won his third PGA Tour title this season on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

Recap: The Puyallup golfer made up for shoddy ball-striking (hit six of 18 greens in regulation) with plenty of one-putts (24 putts in his round). He still didn't give himself many birdie chances. He earned a paycheck of $8,106.

Next: Moore is off this week, and likely will return to the tour starting July 24 for the Canadian Open at Glen Abbey GC in Ontario, Canada.

This week: Nationwide Tour's Players Cup, Thursday through Sunday, Pete Dye Golf Club, Bridgeport, W.Va.

Fourth-round score: 1-over-par 73.

Position: Putnam (1-over 289) finished tied for 57th, 16 strokes behind Chris Anderson and Rick Price (273). Price won the title in a sudden-death playoff.

Recap: The Tacoma native just never got anything going after finishing his first round with a double bogey to shoot 70. He opened his round Sunday with back-to-back bogeys, and later added a double bogey on the first hole. He certainly drove the ball (hit 41 of 46 fairways for the week, and all 14 Sunday) better than he scored. Putnam earned $3,100 for his finish, and dropped three spots on the money list, to 56th.

Next: The Price Cutter Charity Championship starting Thursday at Highland Springs CC in Springfield, Mo.

This week: PGA Tour's John Deere Classic, Thursday through Sunday, TPC Deere, Silvis, Ill.

Third-round score: 3-over-par 74.

Position: Moore (even-par 213) is 76th – or last – in the field, 15 strokes behind co-leaders Brad Adamonis, Eric Axley and Kenny Perry (198).

Recap: Starting on the 10th hole, at the turn, the Puyallup golfer was 2-under on his round after making birdies on the par-5s (Nos. 10 and 17). Then he finished his final nine in 40 (three bogeys, double bogey on the fifth hole). His 1.846 putts per green hit in regulation average is 71st in the field.

Tee time Sunday: 5:25 a.m. PDT with Mark Wilson.

Third-round score: 1-over-par 73.

Position: Putnam (even-par 216) is tied for 54th, 15 strokes behind leader Rick Price (201).

Recap: Scoring was more difficult Saturday than the previous two rounds, but the Tacoma native was 2-under on his round through 14 holes before his double bogey on the par-3 seventh, and a bogey on the next hole. He continues to drive the ball well (hit 37 of 42 fairways in three rounds, and 305-yard average ranks No. 4 in the field).

The pace was supposed to be deliberate.

Plotting a career on the American Junior Golf Association circuit can be both time-consuming and expensive, traveling to tournaments all over the country, just to seek out exposure.

Not 14-year-old James Feutz, a talented but inexperienced teenager from University Place. He thought taking one slow step at a time was the way to go.

And then he did the unthinkable: He won his very first AJGA tournament in California.

Feutz's name is certainly out in the golfing circles, courtesy of his stellar performance in his maiden voyage last May. He closed with a tournament-best, 6-under-par 66 to tie 16-year-old Robbie Mamo, of Appley Valley, Calif., as co-winners of the AJGA's Golf World/Medicus Preseason Junior at The Westin Mission Hills Resort's Gary Player Signature Course.

This tournament specifically targets juniors interested in playing high-profile AJGA events down the line, giving golfers a taste of that type of touring.

Feutz, who plays out of Fircrest Golf Club, did more than just soak it in. He came from five strokes back after the first round to tie Mamo for the title.

Second-round score: 1-over-par 73.

Position: Putnam is tied for 50th (1-under 143), nine strokes behind leader Matt Bettencourt (134).

Recap: Certainly, the good news is the Tacoma native will earn some cash at the highest-paying tournament of the season. And he had to birdie the par-5 17th to make the cut. The bad news is he's not getting much scoring out of his superb ball-striking (missed just two of 28 fairways in two rounds).

Tee time Saturday: 7:17 a.m. PDT off the 10th tee.

This week: PGA Tour's John Deere Classic, Thursday through Sunday, TPC Deere, Silvis, Ill.

Second-round score: Even-par 71.

Position: Moore (3-under 139) is tied for 59th, 10 strokes behind Will MacKenzie (129).

Recap: An opening birdie, his first eagle (on the par-5 17th) since the third round of the Byron Nelson Championship in late April and another birdie to start his second nine (on the par-4 first) had Moore in the top 10 at 7-under. Then, he hit an improbable rough patch, making four consecutive bogeys (Nos. 4-7) to slump back, and out of contention. It was the first time he had a run of bogeys like that all season, and the last time he made four bogeys on one nine-hole side was the second round of the PODS Championship in March.

Tee time Saturday: 9:06 a.m. PDT off the 10th tee with Jerry Kelly and Chris Stroud.

First-round score: 3-under-par 68.

Position: Moore is tied for 29th, four strokes behind co-leaders Ken Duke and Charlie Wi (64).

Recap: The Puyallup native salvaged the round with three back-nine birdies, after making a double bogey on the 11th hole where he hit trees off the tee, and took two shots to get out of rough. He made up for it with birdies at Nos. 14 and 17, and converted a 5-foot putt on the finishing hole for par.

First-round score: 2-under-par 70.

Position: Putnam is tied for 36th, six strokes behind leader Rick Price (64).

Recap: One errant swing – the drive on the 500-yard, par-4 ninth – marred a round that had the Tacoma native close to the top of the leaderboard (birdies on Nos. 10, 12, 14, 17 and 3) much of the round. In fact, at Pete Dye GC, the ninth is really the gorgeous finishing hole, but the two nines were switched for the tournament. With trouble, including a creek that stretches the entire length of the hole, lurking on the left, Putnam dumped his drive out-of-bounds, and had to go back to the tee box for his third shot. He made a double bogey. "Cost me two shots. I was hitting bad shots on the worst holes," Putnam said. It was the only fairway Putnam missed all day, but he still remains in the hunt for a top finish. "Winning secures your PGA Tour card. It would be huge. Even finishing in the top 10, it would help me a lot to where I need to go," Putnam said.

World ranking: 89th.

2008 earnings: $1,107,895 (55th on the PGA Tour).

Last tournament: The topsy-turvy season continues for the Puyallup golfer, who missed the cut at last week's AT&T National (7-over 147), and has now cashed in only half of the 14 tournaments he's played in. To boil it down, simply, when Moore has a chance to make a birdie, he is one of the top golfers on tour in converting (30.5 percent, which ranks No. 13). The Bandon Dunes-to-Chambers Bay pipeline has produced another key cog for the University Place's new course's management team.

Jamie Fay, a graduate of the University of Puget Sound, was named the sales and marketing director at Chambers Bay.

Fay has spent six years in a similar capacity at Bandon Dunes as the marketing and special events manager, and was pivotal in setting up the 2006 Curtis Cup and 2007 U.S. Mid-Amateur.

"We're excited to have Jamie on board,” said Matt Allen, general manager of Chambers Bay. "His marketing and events experience, particularly at a resort the caliber of Bandon Dunes, will be key as we prepare for the upcoming USGA championships at Chambers Bay."

In February, Chambers Bay was awarded the 2010 U.S. Amateur, and the 2015 U.S. Open.

Fay, a Vancouver native, lives in Tacoma.

Television (all times PDT): Golf Channel (Thursday-Friday, noon-3 p.m., 5:30-8:30 p.m.) and CBS (Saturday-Sunday, noon-3 p.m.).

Last year: Jonathan Byrd won his third PGA Tour title, birdieing three of the final five holes for a one-stroke victory over Tim Clark.

Last week: Anthony Kim won the AT&T National for his second victory of the year, closing with a 5-under 65 at Congressional for a two-shot victory over Fredrik Jacobson. Kim, also the Wachovia Championship winner, became the first American under 25 since Tiger Woods to win at least twice in a season on the PGA Tour.

Notes: The British Open is next week at Royal Birkdale. The U.S. Bank Championship also is next week in Milwaukee. … Kenny Perry, the Memorial and Buick Open winner, tops the field. He also will play in Milwaukee, skipping the British Open. … Zach Johnson, from neighboring Iowa, also is in the field. … The highest top-10 finisher not otherwise exempt for the British Open will earn a spot at Royal Birkdale – something Puyallup's Ryan Moore hopes to accomplish this week since he missed out in British Open qualifying. … Three-time winner D.A. Weibring teamed with Chris Gray to design Deere Run. … J.P. Hayes won in 2002, shooting a course-record 61 in the second round and finishing at 22-under 262 — the lowest score in relation to par in tournament history.

This week: PGA Tour's AT&T National, Thursday through Sunday, Congressional Country Club, Bethesda, Md.

Second-round score: 2-over-par 72.

Position: Moore (7-over 147) was alone in 106th, and missed the cut by four strokes. Jeff Overton and Tom Pernice, Jr. are co-leaders at 131.

Recap: Not much happened for the Puyallup native this week as his birdie count (four in two rounds) nearly matched his double bogey number (three, including one on the par-4 18th Friday). Hitting 19 of the 36 greens in regulation usually doesn't lend to great scoring, and Moore missed back-to-back cuts for the third time this season.

Next: Moore has one more opportunity to earn a berth to the British Open at next week's John Deere Classic, starting Thursday at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. He would likely have to win that tournament to play in the British Open.

Recap: When he made birdies, he followed with double bogeys. The Puyallup golfer recorded a double bogey on the par-4 sixth, and on the par-5 ninth to finish his front nine in 38. The last time Moore had two or more double bogeys in one round was in the first round of the 89th PGA Championship last August when he made three of them en route to a 79. Things are firming up for the 2008 BMW Northwest Skins game, and its host, Puyallup's Ryan Moore.

Ben Crane, a Portland native and University of Oregon product, will be the new addition to the second installment of the skins game, which takes place Sept. 12-13 at The Classic Golf Club in Spanaway.

Crane will join Moore, defending event champion Aaron Baddeley, of Australia, and long-hitting Bubba Watson, of Florida in the two-day event, with all proceeds going to local charities.

Jeremy Moore, one of the co-organizers from Moore Management Group, said adding another Northwest golfer was important.

"This event is really aimed at Northwest charities, so to add another fellow Northwest-erner … makes it better than getting somebody in from across the country," Jeremy Moore said. "Plus, Ben was excited to help Northwest charities."

Crane, who now lives in Dallas, missed much of last season with recurring back injuries. He has rebounded nicely in 2008, making 13 of 14 cuts, including a tied-for-sixth at The Players Championship and a fifth-place finish at the Colonial in May.

The 2005 season was Crane's best on the PGA Tour. He captured the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee, Wis. for the second on his two tour victories. He made almost $2.5 million in earnings that year.

2008 earnings: $1,107,895 (51st on PGA Tour).

Last tournament: The up-and-down, head-scratching season for the Puyallup product continues. When he feels good, he usually plays pretty well (three top-10 finishes). But it has been hit or miss. After nearly a three-week layoff, Moore missed the cut at the Travelers Championship late last month, then withdrew from last week's Buick Open because of fatigue. 15th SAHALEE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

When: Today through Thursday, 54 holes of stroke play.

Where: Sahalee Country Club, Sammamish.

Golf course: 6,981 yards, par 72.

Defending champion: Daniel Summerhays, BYU (8-under-par 280).

Notes: This would have been the sixth year the tournament was played for four rounds, but it was shortened because of rain and the Fourth of July. … Summerhays is not defending his title. He won a Nationwide Tour event the week after winning at Sahalee last summer , and subsequently turned professional. … Another member of last year's final group – 2006 champion Kyle Stanley, of Gig Harbor – did not return, opting to play the North-South Amateur at Pinehurst No. 2, the site of the 2008 U.S. Amateur. … Duvall's Derek Berg, a University of Washington product, has three top-10 finishes at the Sahalee Players since 2000, including losing in a playoff two years ago. … Three in-state players have captured the championship (Pasco's Ryan Lavoie in 2000, Puyallup's Ryan Moore in 2004 and Stanley in 2006).
