The United States Men's Amateur championship is the oldest of any USGA championship, played since 1895. Participants have to have a 2.4 handicap or better.

This year's tournament is being played Aug. 18-24 at Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 4 in North Carolina.

Here are capsules of the local products – Tacoma's T.J. Bordeaux, Olympia's Cameron Peck, University Place's Andrew Putnam and Gig Harbor's Kyle Stanley:

This week: PGA Tour's Legends Reno-Tahoe Open, Thursday through Sunday, Montreux Golf and Country Club, Reno, Nev.

First-round score: Even-par 72.

Position: Moore is tied for 55th, seven strokes behind leader Jeff Overton (65).

Recap: The Puyallup product had it to 2-under after sinking an 18-foot birdie putt on the par-3 12th, but finished up with bogeys on Nos. 13 and 16. He finished with 30 putts.

Tee time Friday: 7:23 a.m. PDT off the 10th tee.

This week: Nationwide Tour's Cox Classic, Thursday through Sunday, Champions Run, Omaha. Neb.

First-round score: 4-under-par 67.

Position: Putnam is tied for 21st, four strokes behind leader D.A. Points (63)

Recap: Once again, the Tacoma golfer was a birdie-making machine – his seven ranks No. 2 in the field. Oddly enough, none of his birdies came on par-5s. He did double bogey the par-4 second hole, one of the few holes where he did not hit the green in regulation (hit 15 of 18 in his round).

Tee time Friday: 11:05 a.m. PDT off the 10th tee.
