Herschel (Monty) Montgomery, a longtime Tacoma Golf Association member who was integral in developing youth programs in the 1970s, will receive the annual George Holland Award, given by the Washington State Golf Association for lifetime volunteer work.

In 2005, the annual Tacoma city championship for teenagers was named after him.

They were slowed down after a day by the amateur golfers at the 60th Hudson Cup, but at crunch time, the best club professionals in the Northwest would not be stopped.
Led by Lakewood's Chris Griffin (assistant pro at Tacoma Country and Golf Club) and Sumner's Brian Thornton (pro at Meridian Valley), the pros won six of the 10 singles' matches Friday, and kept the trophy in its grasp for a 28th consecutive year.
Griffin, the Lakes High product, arguably had the toughest matchup for a pro, and took down Clarkston's Joel Dahmen, 1-up, at The Members Course at Aldarra in Fall City.
Thornton dispatched of Jim Dunlap, 5-and-3.
Other winners among professionals included Adrian Burtner, Ryan Gibbons, Ryan Malby (named event's best performer) and Scott Erdmann.

This week: PGA Tour's Frys.com Open, Thursday through Sunday, Grayhawk Golf Club, Scottsdale, Ariz.
Second-round score: Even-par 70.
Position: Moore (1-over 141) finished tied for 94th, missing the cut by two strokes. Arron Oberholser leads at 11-under 129.
Recap: Three times, the Puyallup native made birdie (on Nos. 5, 11 and 14), three times he followed with bogeys (No. 7, 13 and 17). The bogey on the par-4 17th, where he couldn't get up-and-down from the right rough, missing a 13-foot putt, cost him a chance to make the cut. This season, Moore went 0-for-Arizona, missing the cut at the FBR Open in early February, too.
Next: He's taking next week off, but planning on playing in the season-ending Children's Miracle Network Classic starting Nov. 6 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
This week: Nationwide Tour's Miccosukee Championship, Thursday through Sunday, Miccosukee G&CC, Miami.
Second-round score: 1-over-par 72.
Position: Putnam (3-over 145) missed the cut by one stroke, and tied for 67th. Ricky Barnes and Marc Leishman are co-leaders (136).
Recap: Two double bogeys in his first 10 holes Friday doomed the Tacoma native, and he missed the cut for the first time since the Wichita Open in August. In fact, he made a double bogey-6 on the par-4 first hole in back-to-back rounds. Putnam rallied with two birdies over his final five holes, but fell short.
Next: Nationwide Tour Championship starting Nov. 6 at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. Putnam needs to win or finish second there to earn his PGA Tour card in 2009.
This week: PGA Tour's Frys.com Open, Thursday through Sunday, Grayhawk Golf Club, Scottsdale, Ariz.
First-round score: 1-over-par 71.
Position: Moore was somewhere near tied for 85th. Richard Johnson and John Mallinger were early leaders (64).
Recap: The Puyallup native opened with back-to-back birdies, making a 19-foot putt on the par-5 11th to go 2-under early. Three bogeys on par-4s, all on the opening nine holes, accounted for the scoring. He hit his approach into the water at the 515-yard, par-4 18th, but got up and down from 129 yards for his final bogey.
Tee time Friday: 11:15 a.m. PDT off the first tee.
This week: Nationwide Tour's Miccosukee Championship, Thursday through Sunday, Miccosukee G&CC, Miami.
First-round score: 2-over-par 73.
Position: Putnam is tied for 59th, six strokes behind co-leaders Chris Nallen and Fran Quinn (67).
Recap: A double bogey to start off, and two more bogeys had the Tacoma product 4-over after four holes. He did respond with four birdies, including back-to-back ones on Nos. 12-13, to rally. Three of his bogeys came on par-3 holes. He hit only six of 14 fairways in his round.
Tee time Friday: 9:30 a.m. PDT off the 10th tee.
This week: PGA Tour's Frys.com Open, Thursday through Sunday, Grayhawk Golf Club, Scottsdale, Ariz.
World ranking: 116th.
2008 earnings: $1,214,900 (81st on the PGA Tour).
Last tournament: A tied-for-24th finish at last week's Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open was bittersweet. He's making swift progress after his extended layoff and newly-found commitment to conditioning by shooting rounds in the 60s in five of the past six rounds. But Moore dropped almost 20 spots after he made a quintruple bogey-9 on the 72nd hole Sunday.
Tee time Thursday: 6:45 a.m. PDT off the 10th tee with Rocco Mediate and Vaughn Taylor.
This week: Nationwide Tour's Miccosukee Championship, Thursday through Sunday, Miccosukee G&CC, Miami.
World ranking: 571st.
2008 earnings: $127,506 (46th on the Nationwide Tour).
Last tournament: The Tacoma native is in the middle of a season-best streak of six made cuts in a row, including a tied-for-23rd at last week's Chattanooga Classic in Tennessee. But for the second consecutive week, Putnam has been in the top 10 at the halfway point, only to falter on the weekend. In fact, he hasn't shot an under-par score on a Saturday or Sunday since his closing 1-under 70 at the Boise Open in mid-September. Still, he's sixth in all-around ranking (254 points) on the tour.
Tee time Thursday: 4:50 a.m. PDT off the first tee with Tyler Aldridge and Jarrod Lyle.
PGA TOUR's Frys.com Open
Site: Scottsdale, Ariz.
Schedule: Thursday-Sunday.
Course: Grayhawk Golf Club, Raptor Course (7,125 yards, par 70).
Purse: $5 million. Winner’s share: $900,000.
Television (all times PDT): Golf Channel (Thursday, 1-4 p.m., 6-9 p.m.; Friday, 9:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m., 1-4 p.m., 7-10 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 3-5 a.m., 1-4 p.m., 7-10 p.m.; Monday, 3-5 a.m.).
Last year: Canadian Mike Weir won his first tour title since February 2004, beating Australia’s Mark Hensby by a stroke. Weir has eight career victories.
Last week: Marc Turnesa won the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open for his first PGA Tour title, shooting 62-64-69-68 for a tournament-record 25-under 263 total. He led wire-to-wire. Matt Kuchar finished second, a stroke back.
Notes: The tournament is the fifth of seven Fall Series events. Puyallup's Ryan Moore is in this week's field. … The tour will be in Florida the next two weeks for the Ginn Sur Mer Classic in Palm Coast and the Children’s Miracle Network Classic in Lake Buena Vista.

This week: PGA Tour's Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, Thursday through Sunday, TPC Summerlin, Las Vegas, Nevada.
Fourth-round score: 1-over-par 73.
Position: Moore (17-under 271) finished tied for 24th, eight strokes behind winner Marc Turnesa (263).
Recap: This won't be a 72nd hole the Puyallup native will forget anytime soon. He walked to the par-4 18th at 22-under, and in a tie for third. He finished 21 minutes later with a quintruple bogey-9 after hitting two tee shots out-of-bounds to the left, and didn't hit the green until his seventh shot. If he had made par, Moore would have earned nearly $200,000. Instead, it was $29,059. Still, at face value, Moore's return from an extended layoff has been fruitful with a pair of top-25 finishes.
Next: Frys.com Open starting Thursday at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
This week: Nationwide Tour's Chattanooga Classic, Thursday through Sunday, Black Creek Club, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Fourth-round score: Even-par 72.
Position: Putnam (10-under 278) finished tied for 23rd, 14 strokes behind winner Arjun Atwal (264), who defeated Webb Simpson in a sudden-death playoff for the title.
Recap: The long highlight was making an eagle on the par-5 14th for the second time in the tournament. Otherwise, it was a ho-hum weekend for the Tacoma native, who made more bogeys (seven) than birdies (four) in the final two rounds. Putnam moved up one spot on the money list, to 46th ($127,506), and trails the 25th-spot by nearly $67,000.
Next: Miccosukee Championship starting Thursday at Miccosukee G&CC in Miami, Fla.
This week: PGA Tour's Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, Thursday through Sunday, TPC Summerlin, Las Vegas, Nevada.
Third-round score: 4-under-par 68.
Position: Moore (18-under 198) is tied for eighth, three strokes behind leader Marc Turnesa (195).
Recap: The Puyallup native dropped one spot on the leaderboard (from eighth to ninth), but gained one stroke on the leader – and a front-runner who has never won on the PGA Tour. For the third consecutive round, Moore made birdies on the par-4 sixth and par-5 ninth holes, and ended his round by canning an 11-foot putt for another birdie. His 28 birdies are tied for sixth in the field.
Tee time Sunday: 12:05 p.m. off the first tee with John Mallinger.
This week: Nationwide Tour's Chattanooga Classic, Thursday through Sunday, Black Creek Club, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Third-round score: 3-over-par 75.
Position: Putnam (10-under 206) is tied for 24th, 14 strokes behind leader Arjun Atwal (192).
Recap: Putnam ranks 99th on the Nationwide Tour in third-round scoring, and again, struggled at that tournament juncture Saturday (four bogeys, double bogey), dropping 16 spots on the leaderboard and ending his chances at contending for his first professional title. Putnam, Chad Ginn (73) and Scott Stallings (73) were the only ones in the top 30 to post over-par rounds.
Tee time Sunday: 8:51 a.m. PDT off the first tee with Gary Christian.
This week: PGA Tour's Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, Thursday through Sunday, TPC Summerlin, Las Vegas, Nev.
Second-round score: 8-under-par 64.
Position: Moore (14-under 130) is tied for seventh, four strokes behind co-leaders Matt Kuchar and Marc Turnesa (126).
Recap: The home turf for Moore, the former UNLV All-American, is proving valuable. The Puyallup native shot his first bogey-free round of 2008, rolling in eight birdies to move into contention. And he's sporting a new look this week – wearing a plush headband. "I just, you know, want to keep people on their toes and change it up every now and again for fun," he said. Moore finished strong by making a 32-foot putt on the 204-yard, par-3 17th, and just lipped out a 22-foot eagle putt on the par-5 finishing hole for another birdie. His 15 birdies in two rounds is tied for sixth in the field. "If you drive the ball well out here, you got a lot of wedges, and I've been hitting them decently well," Moore said.
Tee time Saturday: 12:23 p.m. PDT off the first tee with Chez Reavie.
This week: Nationwide Tour's Chattanooga Classic, Thursday through Sunday, Black Creek Club, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Second-round score: 10-under-par 62.
Position: Putnam (13-under 131) is tied for eighth, six strokes behind leader Webb Simpson (125).
Recap: Quite possibly the Tacoma native's best round of his career (six birdies, two eagles, no bogeys). From a scoring standpoint, the 62 is his best ever, and it was exactly what the Life Christian Academy graduate needed – he moved up 49 spots on the leaderboard. "I hit the ball really well, and have for the last four or five weeks," Putnam said. "We haven't had wind, so the fairways are wider, and the greens are rolling nicer. I'm giving myself a lot of opportunities." For the third time this season, Putnam made a pair of eagles in one round – and hit 4-iron to both the par-5 fourth (from 225 yards out) and the par-5 14th (215 out), and sank 10-foot putts on each green. Four players, including Putnam, shot 62s or better Friday. "It's hard to keep those numbers up they're shooting, and even for me. If I shot 6- or 7-under Saturday, it would be perfect," he said.
Tee time Saturday: 9:34 a.m. PDT off the first tee with Kris Blanks and Matt Hansen.
This week: Nationwide Tour's Chattanooga Classic, Thursday through Sunday, Black Creek Club, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Second-round score: 3-under-par 69.
Position: Putnam is tied for 58th, eight strokes behind leader Webb Simpson (61).
Recap: Appears birdies will by flying around for four days at Black Creek Club. If that, indeed, is the case, the Tacoma native will need to produce more than the four birdies he had Thursday, especially after hitting 15 of 18 greens in regulation.
Tee time Friday: 11:46 a.m. PDT off the 10th tee.

The club professionals in the Northwest have a monumental streak going.
Twenty-seven up.
Twenty-seven down.
That is how it stands the last 27 years in the WSGA's Hudson Cup between the pros and top amateurs in the Northwest facing off in three days of match-play competition.
"There is a ton of pressure, and obviously there are a lot of good amateurs in the Northwest," said Chris Griffin, the assistant pro at Tacoma Country and Golf Club playing in his second Hudson Cup. "But we have a pretty good team of professionals, too."
The 60th Hudson Cup opens Wednesday at The Members Course at Aldarra in Fall City.
This week: PGA Tour's Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, Thursday through Sunday, TPC Summerlin, Las Vegas, Nevada.
World ranking: 114th.
2008 earnings: $1,185,841 (80th on PGA Tour).
Last tournament: Two weeks ago, Moore interrupted his originally-scheduled extended vacation in Puyallup by committing to playing in the Turning Stone Resort Championship (2-under 286) and tied for 25th. And the Cascade Christian product was encouraged by his pair of 69s during weekend play of that event. Today, he returns to his college roots near UNLV, and is expected to play the next three tournaments.
Tee time Thursday: 12:46 p.m. PDT off the first tee with Jason Day and John Huston.
This week: Nationwide Tour's Chattanooga Classic, Thursday through Sunday, Black Creek Club, Chattanooga, Tenn.
World ranking: 560th.
2008 earnings: $122,856 (47th on Nationwide Tour).
Last tournament: Last week's 27th-place finish at the WNB Golf Classic was the Tacoma native's fifth consecutive cut made, but not what he had hoped for after being in the top five at the midway point. Putnam's third-roun 76 sent him sprawling down the leaderboard. Now, he's in a must-win – or at least must-finish-in-top-three mode – position to gain his 2009 PGA Tour card as he heads down the home stretch of the season schedule.
Tee time Thursday: 7:01 a.m. PDT off the 10th tee with David Branshaw and Bendon de Jonge.
PGA TOUR's Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open
Site: Las Vegas.
Schedule: Thursday-Sunday.
Course: TPC Summerlin (7,243 yards, par 72).
Purse: $4.1 million. Winner’s share: $738,000.
Television (all times PDT): Golf Channel (Thursday, 2-5 p.m., 8-11 p.m.;
Friday-Sunday, 3-5 a.m., 2-5 p.m., 8-11 p.m.; Monday, 3-5 a.m.).
Last year: George McNeill won his first PGA Tour title, finishing at 23-under 264 for a four-stroke victory over D.J. Trahan.
Last week: Zach Johnson won the Texas Open for his fourth PGA Tour title, following a third-round 62 with a 64 for a two-stroke victory over Charlie Wi, Mark Wilson and Tim Wilkinson. Wi finished with a 61.
Notes: The tournament is the fourth of seven Fall Series events. … Former UNLV players Chad Campbell, Chris Riley, Ryan Moore (from Puyallup) and Charley Hoffman are in the field along with McNeill, Johnson, Hunter Mahan, Fred Couples, John Daly and Mike Weir. … The Frys.com Open is next week in Scottsdale, Ariz., followed by the Ginn Sur Mer Classic in Palm Coast, Fla.

This week: Nationwide Tour's WNB Golf Classic, Thursday through Sunday, Midland Country Club, Midland Texas.
Third-round score: 4-over-par 76.
Position: Putnam (3-under 213) is tied for 34th, 14 strokes behind leader Marc Leishman (199)
Recap: This one hurts. After day after making seven birdies, the Tacoma native did something Saturday he has not done all season – play a round without a birdie or eagle, and fell 28 spots on the leaderboard. Driving accuracy was part of the problem (hit only six of 14 fairways), and half the bogeys surprisingly came on par-5s. Putnam's 76 was the worst round he's had this season.
Tee time Sunday: 6:30 a.m. PDT off the first tee with Rich Barcelo and Jason Schultz.
This week: Nationwide Tour's WNB Golf Classic, Thursday through Sunday, Midland Country Club, Midland Texas.
Second-round score: 5-under-par 67.
Position: Putnam (7-under 137) is tied for fifth, four strokes behind Marc Leishman (133)
Recap: Not often in a round where seven birdies are made is a "real good bogey" the talk of the round. That is what the Tacoma native did Friday. He hit into a water hazard on the par-4 10th, but got up-and-down from 80 yards for a bogey. After that, Putnam made four birdies over the next five holes to move into contention. He birdied all the par-5 holes Friday (longest putt was 12 feet), and is 7-under on them through two rounds. "The par-5s are tough. I only went for one of them today (in two shots). It wasn't like I was making easy birdies," he said.
Tee time Saturday: 7:45 a.m. PDT with Michael Boyd and Spencer Levin.
This week: Nationwide Tour's WNB Golf Classic, today through Sunday, Midland Country Club, Midland Texas.
World ranking: 554th.
2008 earnings: $119,260 (46th on Nationwide Tour).
Last tournament: The Tacoma native is coming off a tied-for-52nd showing at the Oregon Classic (2-under-par 286) in late September, and has made four consecutive cuts. Counting this week, three full-field events remain before the Nationwide Tour Championship on Nov. 6-9 where the top 60 players on the money list will advance. Putnam's 300 birdies this season rank No. 3 on tour.
Tee time today: 10:44 a.m. PDT with Anders Hultman and Chris Nallen.
PGA TOUR's Texas Open
Site: San Antonio.
Schedule: Thursday-Sunday.
Course: LaCantera Golf Club, Resort Course (6,881 yards, par 70).

Last year: Justin Leonard won the event for the third time to match Arnold Palmer’s record, beating Jesper Parnevik with a 10-foot birdie putt on the third hole of a playoff. The Texan also won in 2000 and 2001.
Last week: Rookie Dustin Johnson won the Turning Stone Resort Championship in Verona, N.Y., for his first PGA Tour title, holing an 8-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a one-stroke victory over Robert Allenby. Puyallup's Ryan Moore played after a month-long layoff, and placed 25th.
Notes: The tournament, played in San Antonio since 1922, is the third of seven Fall Series events. Beginning next year, the event will be played in May. … Tommy Armour III broke the PGA Tour’s 72-hole scoring record in 2003, finishing at 26-under 254. Puyallup's Ryan Moore, third-year PGA Tour member and host of the BMW Northwest Charity Skins game last month, will be center stage in "Inside the PGA Tour" on Tuesday.
Footage from the skins game with fellow professionals Aaron Baddeley, Ben Crane and Bubba Watson at Chambers Bay Golf Course, plus behind-the-scenes legwork and interviews with Moore and family members will air on The Golf Channel at 3:30 p.m. PDT.
Reruns of the episode will also take place at later dates.
Paige Mackenzie knows the LPGA Tour has been away from the greater Seattle area for a decade. And the Yakima native, and ex-Washington Huskies standout also is aware how healthy the climate of the sport is in the area.
So, she's bringing the LPGA Tour experience back – for one day.
Mackenzie is hosting "The Paige Mackenzie Charity Shootout" on Saturday at Meridian Valley Country Club in Kent, which is free to the public.
Scheduled to be part of Mackenzie's star-studded field are 11 female professional golfers, most of them current members of the LPGA.
The field includes Northwest natives Wendy Ward, Allison Hanna-Williams and Jimin Kang, as well as Erica Blasberg, Irene Cho, Julieta Granada, Hannah Jun, Kellie Kuehne, Taylor Leon and Becky Lucidi.
