Herschel (Monty) Montgomery, a longtime Tacoma Golf Association member who was integral in developing youth programs in the 1970s, will receive the annual George Holland Award, given by the Washington State Golf Association for lifetime volunteer work.

Montgomery, 94, will be given the award at a WSGA annual meeting dinner tonight at Canterwood Golf and Country Club in Gig Harbor.

Two of his 38 years spent with the TGA was as president, in 1977-78, but his most memorable work has been with raising scholarship money for the youth programs. With his help, the TGA has given out more than $20,000 in scholarships to juniors.

In 2005, the annual Tacoma city championship for teenagers was named after him.
