Last week: Tiger Woods broke out of a four-way tie for the lead in the Memorial with birdies on his final two holes, the last a 7-iron that stopped a foot away for a 7-under 65 and a one-shot victory over Jim Furyk. Woods won Jack Nicklaus’ event for a record fourth time, finishing at 12-under 276 for his 67th PGA Tour victory.
Notes: Phil Mickelson is returning to competition three weeks after suspending his schedule when wife, Amy, was diagnosed with breast cancer. The second-ranked Mickelson, preparing for the U.S. Open next week at Bethpage Black on Long Island, tied for 55th in The Players Championship in his last start. He has two victories in 10 events this year. … Area resident John Daly is returning to the PGA Tour after a six-month suspension for a series of off-course events. Second last month in the Italian Open, Daly failed to earn a U.S. Open spot in qualifying Monday, shooting 70-73. … Leonard also is in the field along with Padraig Harrington, Sergio Garcia, Retief Goosen, Henrik Stenson, Camilo Villegas, 2007 winner Woody Austin and 2003-04 champion David Toms. … Al Geiberger shot the first 59 in PGA Tour history in his 1977 victory at Colonial Country Club. … John Cook had a tournament-record 26-under 258 total in 1996, shooting 64-62-63-69. … Stanford Financial dropped out as the title sponsor in March after its assets were frozen during a federal investigation into fraud.

Last week: South Korea’s In-Kyung Kim won the State Farm Classic in Springfield, Ill., for her second career LPGA Tour title, with birdies on two of the final three holes for a one-stroke victory over Hall of Famer Se Ri Pak.
Notes: Top-ranked Lorena Ochoa, a three-time major champion, has two victories in eight starts this year. … Michelle Wie, second as an amateur in 2005, tied for 54th last week in Springfield. … Brittany Lincicome won the first major of the year, the Kraft Nabisco in April. … Tseng won the LPGA Corning Classic last month. She’s second in the world ranking. … Norway’s Suzann Pettersen won in 2007. … Annika Sorenstam swept the 2003-05 titles, winning at DuPont in Wilmington, Del., in 2003 and 2004 and Bulle Rock in 2005. … Pak won in 1998, 2002 and 2006. … The tour is off next week. Play will resume June 25-28 with the Wegmans LPGA in Pittsford, N.Y.

Last year: Australia’s Jarrod Lyle won the second of his two 2008 titles, beating Chris Kirk with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff. Lyle also won the Mexico Open.
Last week: Sweden’s Mathias Gronberg won the rain-delayed Melwood Prince George’s County Open in Maryland for his first official U.S. victory, closing with bogey-free rounds of 67 and 65 to beat Robert Damron and Justin Bolli by six strokes. Gronberg, a four-time winner on the European tour, had a tournament-record 19-under 269 total.
Notes: The tournament is one of four remaining events from the tour’s first season. Springfield, Mo.; Wichita, Kan.; and Boise also have had events since 1990. … Australia’s Michael Sim, the Stonebrae Classic and BMW Charity Pro-Am winner, is trying to become the ninth Nationwide Tour player to earn an in-season promotion to the PGA Tour as a three-time winner. The U.S. Open qualifier leads the money list with $388,067. … Tacoma's Michael Putnam is playing this week. … The Fort Smith Classic is next week in Arkansas, followed by the Nationwide Tour Players Cup in Bridgeport, W.Va.
