OK, here’s the latest story out of Baltimore from the Sun. The piece I found interesting is that the Orioles were annoyed by Adam Jones speaking about the discussions.

Apparently there is rumor swirling around the Baltimore area that the reason the deal is being held up is a concern that Adam Jones may have a degenerative hip condition. I have ow idea where or how this rumor started.

The guys over at the Baltimore Sun, who are good guys and solid journalists, are treating it as nothing more than a wild rumor. Roch Kubatko mentions it in his blog.

I covered more than 50 Rainiers games last season and saw Jones every day, and I never saw him so much as limp during my time. In fact, he was pretty durable. He only missed a handful of games, and they were all for minor dings that are commonplace during the season.

But the idea of a degenerative-hip problem hits the Orioles where they live. In 1999, they signed then-free agent slugger Albert Belle to a five-year, $65 million contract. After just one season, it was discovered Belle had a degenerative-hip arthritic condition - he fought his way through an injury shortened 2000 season and never played again.

But because of that, Angelos has been obsessed with getting the most in-depth medical background he can for any player he’s going to sign or trade for. And so any sort of peep about a possible health issue with the Mariners' centerpiece of the Bedard deal is going to be a cause for concern and extreme checking.

That being said, I'd be really surprised if Jones had anything wrong with him. I think it's people just looking for reasons or excuses. Then again I could be wrong. After all, I thought Britney Spears would make a great mom too.

More to come tomorrow I'm sure....

It is nice for a change to be updated about the Mariners. I think Divish should just take over this blog. Thanks Divish keep up the good work.

While I am sure Ryan works very hard, I still wait for Larry LaRue's comments. He is the best baseball writer
in the Northwest, by far!

The Orioles could be playing games (they are known for some frustrating trading tactics) seeing if with Santana off the market other teams that pursued him might up the offer for Bedard.

As the quality pitchers get picked off...teams tend to overpay for what is left on the market. I think the Orioles are hoping that desperation sets in.

I think the move would possibly be a good one -- Bedard is still quite young, which take the sting off losing Jones a bit -- but he's not signed long-term and he will be pricey after this season. Historically, well since the 90's anyway, the Mariners have been a tad weak on the farm and it's hard to see them let go of a blue chipper. And it's still hard to think of this team getting to the Series through an unbelievably loaded Boston team and a very tough looking Detroit team -- that makes it harder to give up on the young guy. But Bedard could be a rotation piece for 10 years still -- and he might get them past L.A. and into the playoffs -- might. It might just be worth the gamble.

There hasn't been much talk about George Sherill. I didn't realize it, but I just read elsewhere that his era was 2.36 in 2007. Last year, Bavasi GAVE AWAY Rafeal Soriano, & now Sherill. We'd best hope Mark Lowe does a really good job recovering from surgery, or we're going to have a BIG problem getting from Bedard to J.J. I don't see anyone other then Lowe & Sherill on the roster I'd even consider for set up. And then there's Brandon Morrow. I thought we drafted him to be a starter. With Bedard, there's no place in the rotation for Morrow unless someone goes down hurt.

No disrespect to Mr. Divish, but he has mostly just posted links to other newspaper articles and not really had that much insight / inside information. For example, all six posts he has provided relate to another news source for content.

Mr. LaRue clearly posts with much more insight / inside information. He actually posts information from his own sources. He is an excellent writer!
