Yes it's the Sausage race

This was the most exciting aspect of Sunday's game in Maryvale.

Actually it's Monday when I'm posting this, but oh well. I wanted to provide more updates from today but I ended up writing later than I thought and then headed out for a late bite to eat with John McGrath. Chips and Queso for my meal, living the healthy life. At this point, I'll be built like Bartolo Colon in a few weeks.

To paraphrase him from Major League: "Two hits? That's all we got is two damn hits?"

Here's a few quick thoughts.....

Mike Morse must make this team. Yes I know this is spring training, and I know we shouldn't have a vested interest beyond reporting, but I really feel like he can contribute even more than anyone on the Mariners' believes. He's a good player and a good guy and he deserves a chance. Now will he get it?

I didn't get to see Phillippe Aumont pitch today (I stayed here in the area for the game, instead of heading south to Tucson), but you had to expect some level of failure because he's been so dominant so far. It happens he'll be fine. It just goes to show how far he still needs to go and how much grooming in the minor leagues he needs before he can even think of going to the big leagues. Don't be going and having Ryan Anderson nightmares.

Chips and Queso are just better here than in the Puget Sound.

How is it the large core of the Mariners everyday lineup get no-hit for five innings by Claudio Vargas, and a group of back-ups and minor leaguers score four runs and get eight hits off Brandon Webb.

I'll be in Tucson for Monday's game with Erik Bedard starting. What's the over-under on the number of questions the media can ask. I really am looking forward to this out of comical aspect than anything else.

I sat down with Tony Phillips of a long interview the other day -- don't think we can post that audio on the blog.

Judging by seeing the Brewers play twice, their fans like bratwurst - a lot. Treadmills not so much. Maybe I should move to Milwaukee.

If the cuts go as expected most predict, the Rainiers could have Wlad Balentien, Matt Tuisasosopo, Tug Hulett, Mark Kiger, Bryan LaHair, Jeff Clement, Rob Johnson, Jeremy Reed, Rob Rohrbaugh, Ryan Feierabend, Ryan Rowland-Smith, Yung Chi Chen, Jon Huber, Joe Woerman, Stephen Kahn on the team.... that's a pretty good team.

Richie Sexson had some awful at-bats (similar to midseason) in the last few games. Trend? or Given?

That last line made me laugh. At this point, Sexson's struggles are a given.

So if Morse makes the team, exactly where does he contribute. Pinch hitter? Will he back up Wilkerson and Ibanez more often than Bloomquist? He probably should, but I'm not sure that he will.

Morse for Sexson at 1B, or Morse in LF with Ibanez at 1B.

I understand that the Mariners are committed to Sexson this year, but I believe that "commitment" is solely because they owe him about $12 million whether he plays for them or gets released. There are no takers for his services, so the Ms are trying to get pennies back on their dollars spent.

If Sexson is allowed to play the entire year, won't the Mariners be essentially eating all of the contracts of the entire team for a season because they were unwilling to just swallow one? Sexson's double plays and stike outs will kill this offense. Remember when teams consistently pitched around our #3 hitter (Ibanez in most cases) so they could pitch to Sexson with runners on first and second, or bases loaded...it was comical and seemingly unique to the 2007 Mariners.

What a shame it would be to bring Morse up and have McLaren let a young player rot on the bench and give him infrequent ABs against top pitching late in games.

Given!

YES! Just swallow Richies contract and put morse at first, or Ibanez at first and Morse in Left. Morse is a superior hitter to Sexon.
