Well, I've been released from Don's trunk after the Mariners' awful offense proved I'm not a jinx. Don't worry Don, I won't tell them that you have the remains of Jimmy Hoffa in your trunk.

I knew I wasn't a jinx.

Why?

This Mariners' offense is bad beyond jinxes and superstitions. Still, a big thanks to Don for covering the game, which allowed me to play some fastpitch softball last night and avoid getting more bitter and frustrated with the Mariners.

Here's some linkage...

* Here's Don's game story from last night.

* Here's his notebook which leads with a conversation with Chuck Armstrong.

* Our columnist Dave Boling calls for Junior to be brought back to Seattle.

* Here's Evan Grant's game story from the Dallas Morning News.

* LA Times baseball writer Bill Shalkin thinks the Mariners should go after Barry Bonds.

I cannot believe how bad Vicente Padilla made the Mariners look. Basically the Mariners let a guy, who looks like a serial killer, hold them to two hits...

The lineup looks a little different for tonight's game...

Ichiro CF
Lopez DH
Ibanez RF
Beltre 3B
Sexson 1B
Betancourt SS
Balentien RF
Johjima C
Bloomquist 2B

McLaren decided to give a slumping Jeff Clement - 13 strikeouts in 23 at-bats - the night off with the Rangers starting lefty Kason Gabbard.

Clement is obviously pressing a little, which is something the whole team is guilty of. But the youngster is not this bad of a hitter. I did ask McLaren that if Clement wouldn't have been slumping, would he be in the lineup normally against lefties, and McLaren said absolutely.

Last season in Triple A, Clement actually hit lefties better than righties. He hit .315 (40-for-127) against lefties with 13 doubles, 10 homers and 28 RBI, and .259 (85-for-328) with 22 doubles, 10 homers and 58 RBI against righthanders last season.

Obviously the sample size of at-bats differs, but I've watched Clement consistently rake lefties. One of the main reasons why is that he is willing to stay in on the ball. He doesn't bail out because his strength is really hitting the ball of the opposite field, particularly the left-center gap. When he's hitting well, Clement stays in and sprays the ball all over the field - obviously he's not doing that now.

And that leads us to the decision to pinch-hit for Clement with Willie Bloomquist. The decision belonged to bench coach Jim Riggleman, who assumed the duties after McLaren was tossed out of the game.

I don't care how bad Clement is hitting, I give him the chance to hit because he has a chance to hit the ball out of the park. Willie? Not so much.

It would be nice to have Greg Norton on the bench still, but he's too busy getting big hits for Atlanta.

* Jose Vidro is available only as a pinch-hitter tonight because of his back spasms.

* Lopez said he's comfortable with DHing having done it quite a bit in the Venezuelan Winter League.

something is wrong. either it was wrong to acquire Norton or, once he had the good spring and hit at Tacoma AND Seattle, it was wrong to ship him out. Two at bats in Atlanta, 3 rbi's, 2 hits. Was it wrong to acquire Wilkerson? it seems that is what management has said. Was it wrong to acquire Dickey? And after his good spring, decent performacne at both Tacoma AND Seattle, was it still so wrong that you send him down and leave Batista and Baek and the other mid-relievers in place? Sexton, really nice guy, streaky hitter, with too many strikeouts at critical times. They can eat Wilkerson's salary, but is it right to keep playing Sexton? It was right to bring Morse to Seattle, but not right to play him in the outfield where he was uncomfortable, error-and-injury-prone. Is Reed being punished? What would be wrong with Reed in left field, Ibanez DH? They seem to have lost confidence in Vidro, Clement strikes out more than Sexton. Jojima should have been traded, but we all know why he is still there. This management is conservative. It was under Hargrove and it is under Mclaren.

It's sad to see this team fall apart. I'am a die hard Mariners fan, but this team is so boring to watch. No one on this team gets me excited(big hopes for Balentine). We make every opposing pitcher look like a All-Star. When will it be time to throw in the towel and start over? This organization needs to be completely revamped from upper management to starting line up. My thoughts... Go Mariners....

I agree with most of what ruminator1 posted. I'm not ready to give up on Batista, & Bavasi deserves at least as much blame as McLaren, but otherwise....

IF (a BIG IF) they both have options, I would suggest sending Clement back to Tacoma to get his confidence back & send up Jeremy Reed. IF not, GET RID OF FREAKING WORTHLESS CAIRO (0-fer 2008!) & bring up Reed.

One good thing if Sexon does get suspended they'll have the option to put someone at first who can hit (Please oh God please NOT CAIRO).

leave reed in minor because he not to me a Major league hitter. If anybody deserve the call up it LeHair as he can replace the 14million dollar man Sexson or Roy C to replace Lowe or Morrow who can go to Triple A and start to be a starter than comes back and take over for washburn. Jarrod Washburn goes to bullpen as LR and Baek get cut in the process.

Rotation
Erik B
Felix
Silva
Batista
Morrow

Sound like good Rotation dont you think?

I like BigMike's idea except for this tweak. Send Bedard back to the Orioles for Jonesie and Sherrill and leave ol Wash in the rotation with Morrow coming in when he is ready. There is no reason to waste this good of starting pitching (well on paper anyway) on a team this bad. Here you have arguably the best starting rotation in the AL and easily the worst team. Normally I'm a guy who argues that starting pitching is your foundation, but this team shoots that argument to crap.

Hey Dave8557, what about the 4-man rotation in addition to pitching deeper into games? I'd love to see our best guys every fourth day rather than fifth. Can't you just hear it? Mac and Mel announce in spring training that we are going to expect starters to go 8 innings AND we are going to do that with a four man rotation, just like they used to. You'd have a REVOLT. What, pitchers in the early 1970's and prior were Supermen? I'd love to see these guys man-up a little more. Athletes today are bigger and stronger and faster, but they have sacrificed endurance to get there.

Rant off.

the mariners need some drastic ACTION; Some recommendations:
get rid of--Cairo,Sexton, Baek, Mclaren
bench-Jojima
bring up--Reed,Dickey
1st base--Raul
LF--Reed
DH--Vidro (when healthy), Bloomquist
revised consideration--Barry. I am not a Bonds fan, but he has to be better than what we have even at this age and even with the steroid controversy. like FIRE.

I agree Squid. Four man rotation. The 5th starter is always the weakest. So get rid of him. It's a toss up between Batista and Washburn. They can battle it out. When one falters, the other takes his place. Keep a 10 man staff, 11 at most. Bring up Reed. Why not. More thoughts on that later, as I have some errands to run.

OR Wash and Batista can share 4th spot. Each pitches 3-4 innings and then 'pen.

Of course, it will never happen. And, given the endurance of today's pitchers would probably result in disaster.
