Before heading into another mass meeting, baseball GMs and their assistants talked about rumors in the same way fans do – all wondering which were true and where some came from.

Among those floating here this morning:

Atlanta has cooled on one-time phenom Jeff Francour – he batted .239 last season – and is mentioning him in trade talks with anyone who’ll listen. And in Oakland, where Billy Beane annually signs an almost-done verteran hitter (Mike Piazza, Frank Thomas), the Athletics are eyeing Jason Giambi, who the Yankees let go.

The Angels didn’t pick up Garret Anderson’s option, but now are hinting they may have the money to retain Mark Teixiera AND pursue C.C. Sabathia. If you’re missing any money from your 401-K, apparently it’s in Anaheim.

San Diego ace Jake Peavy, who had a no-trade clause included all American League teams, has waived it for the Angels and Yankees.

Cleveland wants a closer, and likes Oakland’s Huston Street. The Cubs need pitching but – here’s a surprise – manager Lou Piniella wants more hitting, specifically Brian Roberts and Raul Ibanez.

The White Sox, who traded for Nick Swisher a year ago, now say he’s available again.

Toronto is trying to trade 32-year-old Lyle Overbay to Seattle, and meeting with a decided lack of enthusiasm. The Mets apparently have more interest in left-handed closer Brian Fuentes than record-setting right-hander Francisco Rodriguez.

All this, and they get free breakfast in a hotel that charges $7 for a bottle of iced tea ...

I'd be happy if they could trade for Overbay, especially since he's a home state "hero" if I'm not mistaken I'm pretty sure he's from Centralia....

ALTHOUGH

If the rumors are true, I think since the M's are searching for a solid first baseman what are the chances of trading for Nick Swisher, he's 27, a switch hitter, can play all 3 outfield positions, & he flat out has POP...
I'm not banking on this happening but - My question is: What would be a reasonable trade? In your opinion who would the M's have to give up to acquire Nick Swisher???

snod - my best guess on swisher would be pitching, and not the pitching seattle would want to give up.

I see the Swisher as the perfect "buy low" scenario. The guy is young, and has soured a bit with the shot callers in Chicago. As you've said he's young, is extremely versatile, and. . . . . . actually has a bat. I wish Seattle would be more willing to go after guys that could fill roles for the M's but aren't for their current teams ie. Swisher, Edwin Jackson, Saltalamacchia (if they don't think Clement will play catcher), Travis Buck, some guys who might be projects but have shown some ability to play and could be buy-low scenarios and also add youth to the team.

Larry,

What exactly do you mean when you say the Jays are " meeting with a decided lack of enthusiasm." I'm having trouble figuring out what you mean by that.

I wouldn't say that Swisher can play all 3 outfield positions. I've seen him play CF before and it was just embarrassing. There is a reason he mainly plays at 1b now.

He would be a good replacement for Raul in RF though if Raul were to go, or he would be a good option at 1B. He does have a good bat, and when he gets hot then he can really lift a team.

jon - it simply meant the mariners aren't overly excited about overbay's contract or his numbers the past few years. overbay doesn't seem like the best option, although that could always change.

I like Hank Blalock from Texas as a better first base option (he moved there the second half of the year coming back from injury). Do the M's have any shot at him? Don't know if Texas has opted to keep him. Nice bat for our ballpark.

Dangit, I mean a good replacement for Raul in LF. Doh! Hsnk Blalock is a decent player, but he has always reminded me too much of guys like Russ Branyan and (wait for it) Richie Sexson. When he's hot.... great, when he's not.... yikes. Blalock isn't a big tall goof that has no friends, but he isn't the most consistently great player either. Of course the M's can't be real picky at this point unfortunately.
