FOB Tacoma

Fort Lewis officials say they've completed the movement of all of the 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division's vehicles and cargo containers from the Port of Tacoma back to the post.

The operation occurred without the significant public disturbances that marked the return of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division's equipment last November at the Port of Tacoma Olympia, and the departure of 4th Brigade's trucks through the Port of Tacoma in March 2007.

Fort Lewis spokesman Joseph Piek said Tuesday that 260 Strykers, more than 400 other vehicles and about 700 cargo containers "were successfully and safely moved to the installation using both military and civilian transport."

Detective Tom Williams, a Tacoma police spokesman, said Tacoma officers arrested three persons near the port during the six nights of protests. Lakewood police arrested another five near freeway overpasses leading to Fort Lewis, he said.

UPDATE: Lakewood police spokeswoman Heidi Hoffman said her department's officers made nine arrests, all on the freeway ramps and overpasses. There were three on Friday, three early Saturday and three Sunday night.

That makes a total of 12.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Comparing notes with Lights & Sirens we come up with 14.

The Port Militarization Resistance version is here. The protesters said there were 15 arrests; we could not immediately account for the difference.

Earlier posts from Lights & Sirens are here and here.

Glad to hear of the failure of the PMR criminals!

This “Port Militarization Resistance” or “PMR” group is NOT peaceful! The reason that they are so upset is that law enforcement officers would not permit them to break the law and continue to obstruct lawful traffic on public roads. The real question here is who will be in control of the streets of Tacoma? Is it the elected government or is it PMR? Who controls lawful traffic on the streets of Tacoma? Is it the Tacoma Police or members of this PMR group?

These people were NEVER prevented from exercising their first amendment rights as citizens of the United States. They fully intended on violating the law and the rights of other citizens. They invited people from other cities to come to Tacoma with the express purpose of breaking the law and violating the rights of other citizens. The reason that they are so upset is that Tacoma Police did not allow them to continue to prevent lawful traffic on public streets. Those Tacoma and Lakewood Police officers have been doing a great job. They have exhibited great discipline and professionalism under very difficult circumstances. I appreciate the great job that they have done.

They are protesting. It's their right. God Bless America. Oh, and don't bother flag waving and pouting about how they are protesting the ones who are protecting us. Those troops don't want to be knocking sand out of their boots any more than we want to be reading about their deaths. Wanna protest? Try D.C. That is where they are violating laws and the rights of citizens.

"The Port Militarization Resistance version is here."

If I want to read that kind of trash, I'll go to the Seattle-PI website

I don't really understand what it is that the PMR people want. Do they want the military to say "OK, we'll leave the strykers on the boats." or something? They're wasting not just their own time with this crap, but everyone else's time and tax money. The cops would rather be doing just about anything than babysitting these people so they don't do something that gets themselves hurt- like sitting in a road in front of military vehicles.

The conduct of PMR over the past two years, both in Tacoma and Olympia, has demonstrated a pattern of violence, property destruction, and disregard for the rights of their fellow citizens.

  • Violating the rights of fellow citizens by illegally blocking access of public roads to legal traffic; That’s PMR!

  • Using infants and young children as human shields by bringing them into the street and deliberately placing them in front of large trucks to stop those trucks; That’s PMR!

  • Throwing trash and pushing dumpsters into public streets and arrogantly interfering with private citizen’s access to public streets; That’s PMR!

  • Throwing rocks at Police Officers performing their duty of keeping public roads open for lawful traffic; That’s PMR!

Hey Jeff, it seems like you don't like PMR very much.

robolywa,
I'll like them a bit more when they start following the law and respecting the rights of their fellow citizens. With rights comes obligations. They need to start realizing that and conduct themselves accordingly.

Jeff,

In terms of following the law, how important do you think it is that the President of the USA tells the truth about reasons for taking the country to war?
