A look at local web happenings in Tacoma, Pierce County and South Puget Sound
Tuesday, March 18th, 2008
Posted by Mark Briggs @ 09:13:34 am

We continue to work on the system that powers the comments on our news stories in the hope of turning that feature back on as soon as possible. In the meantime, I want to clear up any misconceptions about why this is happening.

It's a technical problem that needed to be fixed. That is all.

We've received several emails that carried alarmed tones, jumping to one conclusion or another about why we turned the comments off. Here's a sample:

... some readers are interpreting the silence on the message boards as a TNT attempt at squelching dissenting speech. In the absence of an official announcement by TNT, one can expect a variety of conspiracy theories to be offered. An official announcement, posted on the News Tribune's website is (IMHO) in order.

So this post is as "official" as we'll get with an announcement since this is simply a technical problem and not a change in any policy. We're hoping to restore comments in the next day or so. Stay tuned.

And just when you have a big juicy Canterwood story that I could make some really sarcastic comments about! How unfair! :-)

Not to be rude, but it's been almost a week.
If this was a segment of the TNT that shut down the papers ability to communicate,I think it might have been repaired faster.
(Yup, just a gripe and maybe an unfair one but there remains some truth to it.)

Trust me, we're not happy about the rate of progress either. But one technical glitch led to more serious problems so the platform needed to be redeveloped. If everything goes well, we should be turning the comments feature back on today or tomorrow.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

This wouldn't be a Windows-based software product, would it?

Mark,

Thanks for the information. I also received a follow-up email to the comment I sent.

Your problem seems to have mushroomed (though the Easter weekend probably delayed work as well).

Good luck with that - frankiethomas is definitely going through withdrawal and I have notice that I'm missing my fix too.

1st) the online version doesn't come until late - 9 ish
(just means that I have already read the PI & the Times & the Olympian & usually crosscut too) that pretty much means I am done for the day reading the printed news from the real TNT
2nd) no reason to try to comment here.
This thing seems doomed!
almost 2 weeks!
Just think you folks need to know you are quickly loosing your 'charm'

I;m not going through withdrawals, I just have OCD and expect things to WORK and get really annoyed when they don't and then I have to alter my routine. Grrr.
