Let's talk politics.

Republicans continue to round out their field of candidates, going after many of the 63 seats now held by Democrats.

Caleb Heimlich is running against Rep. Dawn Morrell, D-Puyallup. I don't know much about him. He's 22. I sent him an e-mail, asking him if he has a job. Here's what he said in reply:

After graduating from Hillsdale College last May, I worked as a policy analyst at Americans for Prosperity Foundation, which is a grassroots taxpayer education organization located in Washington D.C.
I recently left that job to run for State Representative and plan to devote more than 40 hours a week to door belling and meeting people in the community. I have framed houses in the past and may do that on the side over the summer. My main focus up until the election will be listening to people's concerns and working with residents in the local community to improve state government.

So to directly answer your question, I have temporarily decided to forego steady employment in pursuit of community service.

Here's the news release he sent out:

Caleb Heimlich for State Representative
Bold Ideas for a Brighter Tomorrow

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – April 16, 2008

Heimlich Announces Run for
25th District State Representative

[More:]

PUYALLUP - Puyallup resident and political activist Caleb Heimlich announced today he is running as a Republican for the 25th District State Representative House Seat Position 2 to protect taxpayers and restore responsibility to our state government.

“I am running because I want to improve the quality of life in our state and district.” said Heimlich. “I believe we can achieve that by focusing on results in the core functions of government and maintaining fiscal responsibility by returning government to its proper limits.”

Dawn Morrell, a Democrat, who is the deputy majority whip, now holds the House seat.

"It's time for a change," said Heimlich. “Business as usual is not working down in Olympia. State spending has increased by 33% in four years, while taxes rose by $500 million. For that investment, we are simply not getting matching results. We need new leadership and representatives who are willing to work across the aisle to tackle the challenges facing our state.”

Heimlich is a graduate of Hillsdale College in Michigan and previously worked as a public policy analyst at a grassroots non-profit organization.

Heimlich plans to meet as many residents of the 25th district as possible and hear their concerns as he truly believes, as the Washington State Constitution states, “all political power is inherent in the people, and governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

The district includes Puyallup, Edgewood and parts of Fife, Milton, and the South Hill area.
