I don't know how one can use the phrase "ship shape" and "perfect storm" in the same news release, but somehow the state Department of Transportation did use those contradictory descriptions of the HOT lane debut. As I recall, in the movie version of "Perfect Storm," the boat sank! Something tells me there's gonna be a whole lotta drivers complaining to their legislators and others about those HOT lanes. Especially carpoolers. We're all used to being able to move in and out of the carpool lanes whenever we want, but that's not allowed anymore on Highway 167. Here's the officials version of today's events.

"If vehicles, including carpools, transit and motorcycles, cross the double white stripe, they risk a $124 ticket. Drivers should be aware that the SR 167 HOT Lanes Pilot Project pays for additional Washington State Patrol troopers to enforce the “no double crossing” law."
Will said Washington State Patrol also enforce RCW 46.61.100 (4) It is a traffic infraction to drive continuously in the left lane of a multilane roadway when it impedes the flow of other traffic. When Ma and Pa Kettle in their Cadillac or Minimvan Mommy get in the HOV lane and travel at 50MPH while the rest of us are stuck behind them till we get to a dshed line?
The worst part of the double white line/limited access zones are that there are only access zones every few miles, which means that carpoolers are stuck in the regular lanes for up to three exits to enter the HOV lane or to exit the freeway! Unless you are making a straight shot from Auburn to Renton, or the reverse, you are going to spend much of your time in regular traffic!
I was one of the people who took the survey a few years ago and thought the HOT lane idea was a good one; unfortunately, the state powers that be have taken a good idea and figured out how to hose it up for everyone. At least they are consistant.
The only way to make this truly efficient is to have carpool lane exits at every regular exit. Granted this is an expensive option but it would solve the problem of a carpooler or HOT lane user of having to dash across 2 lanes of traffic to make their exit.
After reading about what you are doing on SR-16 and SR-167 with your HOT lanes and HOV lanes and all the Mickey Mouse transponders, shields and rules that go with them I'm glad I'm living in Wisconsin. Here, in Milwaukee, we have HOV entrances onto the freeway, but not one HOV lane once you get on the freeway. LOL! If you make an unauthorized entrance onto the freeway from an HOV entrance the County Mounties will give you a ticket. However, we do have stop and go lights on the entrances and they really do work well in helping oncoming traffic merge with the freeway traffic so, unlike your freeway planners, ours are not completely inept.
Thanks Mr. Turner. In other article I didn't get a clear picture of who the double white lines affected. I appreciate the clarification that its all of us.
Will troopers also be nabbing those who are developing or acting out road rage including tail gating when stuck behind a slow moving vehicle? We already have enough of these problems on regular lanes without now increasing the risk by trapping motorists in lanes. Somehow I can see increased fee based lanes to later deal with this issue.
