Reporter Melissa Santos writes:
Rep. Dave Reichert’s re-election campaign is up in arms today about Democratic opponent Darcy Burner’s claims she earned a degree in economics.
Burner’s Harvard degree is actually in computer science with a special field in economics -- something I noted in my article on the race last weekend.
Reichert’s campaign spokeswoman, Amanda Halligan, today accused Burner of lying to voters about the issue. Burner is challenging Reichert a second time for the chance to represent Washington's Eighth Congressional District, which includes Seattle's Eastside suburbs and East Pierce County.
“She’s played the voters for fools,” Halligan said. “She’s lied on her resume.”
It’s true that Burner has played up having a degree in economics in two
campaign debates this month. Burner’s speech was the same on both Oct. 8 and
October 10: “I loved economics so much that I got a degree in it,” she said.
Burner campaign spokesman Sandeep Kaushik told me shortly afterward that Burner's degree is indeed a computer science degree, but said the “special field” in economics is like a minor.
“It’s a specialization – it’s more than just taking a few classes,” Kaushik said at the time.
An article in today’s Seattle Times explores the distinction in depth.
Halligan said the campaign has been stretching the truth about Burner’s degree to say the ex-Microsoft manager is more qualified than Reichert to deal with the economic problems plaguing America. Voters should now know that’s not the case, Halligan said.
She added that the Reichert campaign was “completely shocked” by the revelation in today’s Seattle Times.
But Reichert questioned the legitimacy of Burner’s claims in a phone interview with me Oct. 10, almost two weeks ago.
He was criticizing Burner for proposing her own plans to fix the economy and withdraw from Iraq, areas he said are outside her realm of expertise.
“She’s not only a computer science major from Harvard, she’s now an economics major,” Reichert said. “And she’s also a general.”
Kaushik, Burner’s spokesman, said today that Burner’s campaign has been upfront about the nature of her degree all along.
“They just know they’re losing and they’re going to throw every bit of dirt they can at us,” Kaushik said.
The last non-partisan poll of 8th District voters showed Reichert leading Burner by 10 points back in September, but recent polls released by Democratic groups have shown Burner in the lead.
COMMENTS:
Two years ago, Darcy Burner’s qualifications were found to be deficient, so, instead of going out and working for the public, she found it easier to merely inflate her accomplishments. Meanwhile, Dave did many things for us, including helping to push through the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area. So, Darcy inflates her resume (she was not a MSFT “executive”) to try to impress and will say just about anything to get money. Next week will she claim a MS in traffic engineering or that she is a doctor, depending upon the audience or the political crisis du jour? Everyone knows that Dave Reichert is an honest cop and will not lie to impress people and will work hard for the people of Washington.
The one thing Darcy has done well is get money from special interest groups but, as the Times wrote earlier this year, Dave doesn’t like to ask for money pr even a cup of coffee, but Darcy stated "Feel free to buy another share of Darcy Burner, I'm not that expensive."

During my campaign, I studied Dave Reichert and Darcy Burner in depth. During my investigations, I discovered that Dave Reichert is a common sense, bi-partisan, middle of the road congressman. I also discovered that Dave and I are more alike than different. As a matter of fact, we agree on all the major issues and the only difference I could find was that I am pro choice and Dave is pro life.
When I came in a distant third in the primary, I was not about to tell the 5,051 individuals that voted for me to forget everything I stand for and vote for Darcy Burner because she is a democrat. As a result, I crossed party lines and endorsed Dave Reichert. Here are two reasons.
We have a huge budget deficit, a recession in full bloom and now an enormous trade deficit. The standard answer for the liberal Progressive Democrats has been to raise or create new taxes. But this not the answer. We need to run our government like a business. We must hold government agencies accountable for expenditures and accurate reporting.
An article in Real Clear Politics states that in 1956, defense spending dominated the budget at 60%; the Cold War buildup was in full swing and social services accounted for 20% of the budget. Now everything is reversed. Despite the war in Iraq, defense spending is only a fifth of the budget (22%); so-called entitlement payments to individuals are almost 60 percent -- and rising. There was $199 billion more for payments to the poor, including the earned-income tax credit and food stamps, among others… Bottom line is that we are paying three times more to fund entitlement payments than we are spending on the war in Iraq. Yet, we do not hear the liberal Democrats complain about these expenditures. Personally, I am tired of going to work each day and getting taxed to death (over 50 different taxes in our state) to pay for someone to sit at home and abuse unemployment, the welfare system and worker’s compensation.
In addition, if Darcy were to be elected (God forbid), the conservative and moderate views would not be represented. That is alright with me if I do not have to pay taxes. However, we all know that this would not be the case. Personally, I am not a fan of taxation without representation. Before I go to bed at night I pray the Dave Reichert is re-elected. I hope you will do the same.
Burner *does* have a degree in *both* Computer Science and Economics. This is not some craaaazy liberal plot. I, myself, have a degree in International Studies and Anthropology. Wacky, I know! What will the liberal colleges think of next to confound conservatives? Co-education?!
Clearly this story has been pushed by the Reichart campaign in an echo of the McCain campaign's ridiculous and false smears as they slide in the polls. Voters can decide whether this childish finger-pointing and jumping up and down is more important that Reichart's campaign finance violations.
Provided they get all the information.
Furthermore, Burner's campaign is heavily financed from small donors, not "special interests". Reichart's money largely comes from PACs. Why have people donating small amounts turned out for Burner? It's pretty simple. Because they're sick of Bush-style Republicans like Reichart running this country into the ground.
