Smith 7.jpg

Washington high track coach Mark Smith, who led the Patriots to state titles in 1989 and 1990, will retire from coaching and teaching at the Parkland school at the end of the school year.
Smith, shown above coaching football at Tacoma Baptist, piled up the accolades during his 20 years as head coach for the Patriots, winning eight league titles, earning five Top-10 finishes in state and at one point winning 47 straight dual meets from 1986 to 1993.
Smith also was voted the state track coach of the year in 1988.
A banquet to honor Smith will be held June 6, 6 p.m. at Washington High.

Oppelt 7.jpg

The Stadium High football job is vacant — again.
Tigers head coach Dan Oppelt stepped down after a year to take a job as the new coach at Wahluke High, a Class 1A school in eastern Washington that plays in South Central Athletic Conference.
Oppelt finished 1-9 in his only season leading the Tigers.
“I think it was a decision based on his family and lifestyle,” said Stadium High athletic director Jim Catalinich, who was notified by Oppelt of his intentions to leave last Thursday.
Catalinich said interested candidates should apply on the Tacoma school district’s web site, and send a resume and letter of interest to Catalinich at Stadium High. Catalinich put no timeline on hiring a coach, but said with summer football camps looming time is of the essence.
“I am looking for someone who is hard working, who is knowledgeable and who is willing to make a commitment to bring this program into a competitive, 4A level,” Catalinich said about his ideal candidate. “We can’t control the decision someone makes. But we would hope that the person comes in with an interest in being here and making this program successful over a long period of time.”
Catalinich would like to bring a level of consistency and stability to Stadium’s fledgling football program.
The Tigers haven’t had a winning season since 1993, and have won 15 games in the past 11 years.
Stadium only has two winning seasons since 1968, and has dealt with instability over the years, with several head coaches cycling through the program.

Hatch.jpg

After a three-month sabbatical from coaching, former Mount Tahoma football coach Leon Hatch jumped back into the meat grinder, this time at Decatur High.
Hatch was offered and accepted the head coaching position at the Federal Way high school left vacant when longtime football coach Bill Heglar left to take the head football job at Mercer Island.
Hatch resigned from the head job at Mount Tahoma in February, stating a need to spend more time with his family.
“Right before spring break I got some things cleared up to where I could at least think and function,” Hatch said. “So I decided to climb back on the horse again. I just needed to get some perspective on some things at home.”
Hatch said after spending some time away from the rigors of managing a football team he felt a pull to return to the profession he loves.
By that time,, however, Hatch said Mount Tahoma already had started to process of looking for a new football coach, and his former job was not available.
Hatch said he was up front with his former players at Mount Tahoma and told them he wished to return to coaching.
“It was hard for them and for me not to be able to coach them,” Hatch said. “But once I was at the point where I wanted to coach again, they were the first people that I talked to. I didn’t want them to get the perception that I wanted to go somewhere else.
“It was never a fact that I wanted to go elsewhere. I wanted to stay at Mount Tahoma and retire there. But sometimes things happen and you have to restructure your plans, and that was the case with me.”
In five seasons at Mount Tahoma, Hatch compiled a 16-32 record, and took the Thunderbirds to the playoffs last year for the first time since 1985.
Hatch takes over a young Decatur squad that finished 2-8 last year in the tough SPSL North. Hatch coached as an assistant at Federal Way High before taking the Mount Tahoma job, and was a finalist for the Decatur football job when Rik Haines was hired.
“I will just take the same approach when I first arrived at Mount Tahoma,” Hatch said. “We have to get our kids that should be playing, playing – sort of recruiting from within and making sure that academically kids are on track.”
Hatch said the last month has provided a dose of humility. He applied for the Kent-Meridian High football job but Mike Roberts, a teacher at the Kent high school, was hired instead.
“It was a humbling situation,” Hatch said. “It helps me to realize when we are in a situation, whether it’s home, family or work, just to not take situations for granted. Sometimes we get involved in the daily grind and we lose focus on the things that are most important to us.”

With this weekend’s spring sports postseason in full swing, add another high school event to the mix. Competitive Edge performance training is hosting its annual high school football combine this Saturday at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.

Nearly 400 players will be on hand for the event, including Mount Tahoma defensive back Brandon Jimenez, shown above.

Players won’t be suited up in full pads, but you can watch some 7-on-7 passing drills and get a first look at some of the athletes who will make headlines next football season. Click here to see the schedule for the day, and some of the athletes who will be attending.

Several college coaches also will be on hand to watch players go through agility and passing drills in the afternoon session.

Kentridge, which went 1-1 Friday in the 4A South Puget Sound League fastpitch tournament, showed up to Saturday's game at Kent Service Park sans head coach.
Mark Marshall, the Chargers' head coach, had met with Kentridge athletic director Eric Anderson before Saturday's 11 a.m. game to talk about plans for the team.
"Mark and I met this morning to discuss the program and following that discussion, he chose to resign, effective immediately," Anderson said Saturday. He chose not to elaborate on the conversation.
With a 13-7 record after the 6-3 loss to Rogers, the Chargers head to the district tournament with the No. 7 seed and three assistant coaches who helped keep the team going in Saturday's game.
Marshall could not be reached for comment.

Addendum: Marshall had been named SPSL 4A North Coach of the Year this season.

Timberline head football coach Kevin Young decided to step down last week, Timberline athletic director Paul Dean said.
Young, 34, leaves some big shoes to fill. Timberline has won league or conference titles the last four years, and reached the state quarterfinals three of the last four years.
The Blazers finished with a 55-20 record with Young at the helm for seven years.
Young told The Olympian he decided to resign to spend more time with family, but will remain at Timberline as a teacher. He also said burnout was a factor in his decision.
“If you’re not really highly motivated, you can’t do a decent job,” Young told the Olympian. “So I thought maybe it’s just time for a break.”
Dean said the school currently accepting applications for the position, and interested candidates should contact Dean.
Dean also said Young’s presence on the football field will be missed.
“He’s done a great job,” Dean said. “He’s had unprecedented success here, and he will not be easy to replace. But I think we have a lot of positives here. And the person that steps in I think everybody agrees needs to be the right fit, and be the right guy to continue that success.”
