We usually publish our Athletes of the Week in the paper, but the interviews are trimmed to fit space, so I've decided to start including the whole interview for people. Ben Nelson, Puyallup ![]() Nelson, a senior for the Vikings, fired a smooth 3-under-par 33 at High Cedars Golf Course to lead the Vikings to a win Curtis on last Thursday and a 1-over-par at High Cedars on Tuesday to lead Curtis past Bethel. Do you watch golf on TV? What type of putter do you use? What’s the best golf movie ever? Tiger or Phil? What’s your favorite course to play? Do you have any hole-in-ones? What song is playing on your iPod right now? What’s the best thing about golf? What’s the worst thing about golf?
![]() The last time a team scored on a goal on Hawkins in regulation since Sept. 6. Since then she’s been extremely stingy, posting four straight shutouts, including three straight shoot-out wins. You spell your name differently, most people spell it like J-a-c-k-I, how did you come up with that? How many people pronounce it wrong? Do ever talk trash after making a save? Are you watching women’s world cup. Goalie Hope Solo has started every game for the U.S., but going into the big match with Brazil, the U.S. coach Greg Johnnson has decided to start Brianna Scurry instead, as a goalie do you agree? What if it was you? Is David Beckham good or bad for soccer? What song is it? So what’s the first song on your iPod? Country? What’s one TV show you can’t miss? Are you on Team Heidi or Team Lauren? Have you ever scored a goal? So was it better than making a big save?

This appeared on the website ... KRIS SHERMAN; The News Tribune Tonight’s Stadium-Foss high school girls’ soccer match will be played at Mount Tahoma High School instead of Stadium due to another problem with the turf in Stadium Bowl. The match is scheduled at 7:15 p.m. It was moved to Mount Tahoma after officials discovered what appears to be a misalignment of the seams in the artificial playing surface, Tacoma School District spokeswoman Leanna Albrecht said. No other athletic activities have been rescheduled or canceled, she added. It’s the second time this month Stadium’s girls have been sent on the road by a problem with the school’s turf. On Sept. 6, a sinkhole near the 5-yard line at the south end of the field sent the Stadium soccer team packing for a hastily scheduled away game. They played their match against Mountain View at Mount Tahoma High School. Two varsity football games the same week were moved from Stadium Bowl to Lincoln Bowl. But Tacoma School District spokeswoman Leanna Albrecht said this afternoon officials expect only the rescheduling of the soccer match this time. The contractor that repaired the turf after the sinkhole was discovered is scheduled to return to Stadium Bowl tonight to work on the field. “There was a slight separation of the seams,” Albrecht said. “It’s a safety concern. We don’t want kids playing on it.”

Not the prettiest of football games I've ever seen. Kentwood's offense has been largely provided by all-everything tailback Demitrius Bronson, who has 135 yards rushing at halftime, thanks to a 75-yard touchdown run. KW also got a 36-yard field goal from Matt Bell. Kentridge should have had a touchdown as running back Deven Topps lined up at quarterback and fired a 38-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Brandon Turner, who had motioned out of the backfield. However, Turner was flagged for illegal motion and the play was nullified. THe Chargers should still be on the scoreboard, getting great field position on numerous occasions, but failing to capitalize. Neither team is doing much with the passing game. Turner is 2-of-14 for nine yards passing, while counterpart, KW's Luke Angevine, is 2-of-5 for 26 yards. French Field is packed for the crosstown game, hopefully the second half will provide a little more excitement. Thursday, September 20th, 2007

The reason Chad Johnson, or Ocho Cinco as he call himself, can talk so much trash is that he can back it up on the field. I talked trash in these picks and didn't even come close backing it up, finishing an embarrassing 6-7, while Eric went 8-5. So no trash talking this week, at least to Eric.. We stayed in house this week for our guest picker, having former sports writer Scott Fontaine do the picking. Ol' Fontaine, as we call him, is New Orleans boy that is so loyal to the Big Easy that he selected his fantasy football players largely on the basis of whether they played for the Saints, played for the Saints at one time, or played for LSU. Naturally, his team is 0-2 on the season. After a year, covering prep games and working the desk, Fontaine is moving over to the news side (Benedict Arnold) to be a "mobile journalist." What that means we have no idea, other than he's out wandering around the South Sound and talking to random people. For some reason, Fontaine loves Bellarmine Prep. Nobody's sure why other than that he attended a similar school in New Orleans.

The Cardinals weren't exactly polished, but they found a way to win, largely due to quarterback Erich Armstrong and a stingy FP defense. Auburn made it close with a late touchdown pass from Carlo Lavoie to Quintin Nunn. Armstrong rushed for 83 yards on 20 carries, and threw for 77 yards and two touchdowns. check out preps.thenewstribune.com for the stories and scores from another big Friday night.

For awhile it looked as if FP quarterbackk Erich Armstrong was never going to complete another pass, throwing seven straight incompletions, including three that were almost intercepted, but then he ripped four straight, including a 10-yard touchdown toss to Austin Olson,, the second time the duo hooked up in the game. Auburn has replaced quarterback Marshall Klontz with Carlo Lavoie, but it hasn't mattered much.

First highlight of the night just came in: Larry Dixon rushed 17 times for 257 yards and two touchdowns for Olympic on the way to a 40-15 rout of Klahowya.

A pretty sloppily played half. The teams combined for 13 penalties and five turnovers in the first half. Geno Munoz put Mount Tahoma up first with a 32-yard interception return. Ronald Baines failed to get in for the two point conversion. Lincoln answered just before the half when quarterback Demarkus Milner scrambled 48 yards for a score with just under a minute left. Lincoln's point after attempt was blocked. Emerald Ridge 7, Rogers 7 (Halftime)

There are other advantages to playing at home than just the crowd. Franklin Pierce kicker Dirk Mortensen booted a 49-yard field goal as time expired in the half. Mortensen's kick looked like it might be falling short, but it hit the cross bar of the goal post and bounced over. He also kicked a 28-yard field goal earlier in the quarter to give FP a 13-7 halftime lead. Auburn had the ball for two brief possession in the second quarter. One ended with a Jeff Gouveia fumble and the other ended on a three and out. FP quarterback Erich Armstrong has 43 yards rushing on 11 carries, but that total has been hurt by a pair of big losses on bad shotgun snaps. He's completed 3-of-8 passes for 27 yards all to tight end Austin Olson. Auburn's Jeff Gouveia leads the Trojans with 37 yards on 11 carries.

The Cardinals grabbed an early 7-0 lead tin this match of SPSL 3A powers on a 5-yard scoring pass from Erich Armstrong to tight end Austin Olsen. The Cardinals got prime field position on botched hand-off from Auburn quarterback Marshall Klontz and slotback Patrick Tepea, resulting in a fumble which was recovered by FP's Ryan Mullins. Auburn answered with a 2-yard touchdown plunge from Jeff Gouveia. The Trojans score was set up by pretty 19-yard pass from Klontz to Garrett Rutledge on fourth down.

There's another stellar night of football on tap around the state, and The News Tribune is gonna bring you all the results you can handle. Anchoring our coverage is our overhauled prep sports Web site. Search results by sport, school or league. There's no more waiting for results: Once we know what the score is, it's on the site. I'm manning the desk tonight and will be updating this blog when news trickles in of amazing performances or quirky results. And two of our reporters will be updating the blog live from the field. Eric D. Williams, our SuperSonics beat writer who still manages to cram in another 40 hours a week chasing down preps, will be at the Lincoln Bowl to cover Lincoln-Mount Tahoma. And Ryan Divish, our No. 2 man on high schools and Seahawks and Huskies backup, will be blogging from Franklin Pierce-Auburn. (Oh, and don't miss seeing both Eric and Divish at the Puyallup Fair at 4 p.m. Monday. They'll be in The News Tribune booth and more than happy to talk with each and every one of you.)

Jacob Gorbaty, a junior from Stadium High School, was named the Midwest Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Performer of the Week. He anchored a Knox College defense which recorded two shutout victories last week. The Prairie Fire have won two straight matches to move to 2-2 on the season. Knox started the week with a 5-0 win over MacMurray College Wednesday afternoon at Jorge Prats Field. The Prairie Fire held MacMurray to eight total shots and only four shots on goal. Saturday, the Knox defense was even more dominate in a 3-0 win at Eureka. The Red Devils were limited to two total shots, only one of which was on goal.

Ok, I was a week late on my guarantee. But I did sneak by Divish last week (I finished 12-1, Divish went 11-2 and Milles brought up the rear at 9-4), so I’ll see if I can keep the momentum going. There’s plenty of storylines to follow this weekend. Franklin Pierce (2-0) will receive its first real test of the year, as the Cardinals host Auburn (1-1). Emerald Ridge (2-0), the surprise team so far this season, will take on cross-town rival Rogers (1-1) in the “Battle of the Hill.” And Mount Tahoma (1-1) will see if it can stop Lincoln’s win streak against the Thunderbirds at nine games as the Mount Tahoma meets the Abes (2-0) at Lincoln Bowl. And Evergreen Lutheran (0-2) will try to get its first football win in school history against Chief Leschi (0-2) on Saturday. If you haven’t already, check out our Football Friday cover story on surprising Emerald Ridge here. We also had our first Prep Page, with a feature on Eatonville senior girls soccer player Jenna Samora. And here’s a report on Thursday night’s football action, as Bethel remained undefeated with a quality win over Curtis. Today’s guest picker is Bellarmine junior quarterback Lucas Schindele. Good luck tonight against Foss Lucas, and good luck to all of the other local teams that will be in action over the weekend. Also, check back later as Ryan and I will be blogging from Franklin Pierce vs. Auburn and Mount Tahoma vs. Lincoln tonight.

The days of excessive weight-cutting in Washington high school wrestling could be nearing an end. From that data, a minimum weight class will be determined for that wrestler for the remainder of the season. In the mid-1990s, three collegiate wrestlers died in a short span because of extreme weight loss. The NCAA immediately approved a rule to ban that sort of activity. Last season, the National Federation of State High School Association instituted a rule on weight management, stating no boy's body-fat percentage should dip below 7 percent, and no girl should be under 12 percent. If weight loss occurs, no wrestler can lose more than 1.5 percent of his or her body weight in a seven-day period. Hydration testing will not be conducted by coaches, but rather by trainers or other approved assessors. The cost of the test likely will be $5 per participant, in most cases. Meyerhoff said a list of testing sites, including dates, will be posted on the WIAA Web site sometime in mid-October. — Todd Milles

University of Washington head football coach Tyrone Willingham along with several members of his staff are watching intently from the sidelines at the Lakes-Rainier Beach game. Coach Willingham and the Huskies are recruiting several players in the game including Lakes' tight end/defensive end Kavario Middleton, receiver Jermaine Kearse, running back Domanick Davis along with Rainier Beach's Alameda Ta'amu.

It's already 15-0 Lancers thanks to TD runs from Domanick Davis(5 yds) and Calvin Schmidtke (16 yds). But is isn't the Lakes' offense that is dominating. The defense has forced an interception and shut down the Rainier Beach run game. The Vikings have -15 yards rushing on six carries.

Are you such a prep football nut that you argue with your buddies about your alma mater's second-string right guard? Do you check the BlackBerry every few minutes for updates from around the area? Does the sound of your school's fight song (politely poached from a major university, of course) bring tears to your eyes? If so (or if you just like football), we've got the Web site for you. We've overhauled our preps site from last season, and we're updating scores as soon as we get them. No more need to wait to find out the scores of Gonzaga Prep-Bellarmine, Decatur-Beamer, the Fish Bowl, the Spaghetti Bowl or any other game in the area. Rainier Beach-Lakes? We've got it covered. Washington at Bonney Lake? We're chasing it down. Steilacoom-Orting? We're on it. And it's all here.

By Ryan Divish At some point you’d think I’d get tired of dominating on these prep picks. But since I’m so ultra-competitive in everything (just ask my hoop buddies at the Downtown Tacoma YMCA) it never gets old beating Eric week after week. Contrary to what Eric has written or believes, I know where the Narrows Bridge is, I just don’t like going over it. I’ll admit, it took me about six months to find it, almost as long as it took me to find Cascade Christian High School. Part of the reason why the Tacoma native (Eric) can’t beat a hick from the sticks is that he remains loyal to his South Sound roots. Me? I just care about winning. But I think Eric is trying harder this year to overcome last season’s embarrassment. He even resorted to saying I picked Oly over Tumwater. That would never happen. I love the EvCo because the towns remind me of Montana. With the correction, Brandon Turner and I finished with 10-3 records while Eric was 9-4. And so the weekly beatings begin. This week, we’ve brought back former prep coordinator and now TNT golf and WSU writer Todd Milles. A Tacoma native like Eric and a Foss grad, Todd still thinks he knows South Sound football better than any of us, but you guys will see the real truth after this weekend.

Lamardray Fuller hasn’t dealt with publicity like this. The Todd Beamer running back was at practice Wednesday but wasn’t practicing for a while. I tied up about 25 minutes of his time. He hammed for a photographer from one of our competitors, and then he chatted awhile with another reporter. A performance like he had Friday night can have an effect like that. The senior rolled up 307 (!) yards on 24 carries during the Titans’ 49-14 season-opening victory against Jefferson – in a little more than three quarters of work. And caught two passes. And kicked. Oh, and he played some cornerback, too. But 307 yards? C’mon! Let’s get some perspective on that: – Fuller rushed for 1,164 yards, tops in the SPSL South, last season. He’s more than 26 percent toward last season’s numbers. – Reggie Bush, the sparkplug who will lead the Saints to the Super Bowl this year, never eclipsed 300 yards during his amazing college career at Southern California. – The NFL single-game rushing record is 278 yards (set by Corey Dillon on Oct. 22, 2000). – The performance would tie third place all-time in the Southeastern Conference and fourth in the Pacific-10 Conference. And here’s a tidbit that probably won’t make the print edition: When coach Gem Abe told his team the third-stringers were going to play during the fourth quarter, Fuller didn’t hear it. So suddenly he finds himself lining up in the backfield while the rest of the starters were taking it easy on the sideline. “It wasn’t easy, man,” he said. “I’ll leave it at that.” Listen to part of my interview with him here.

News Tribune staff Fallen dirt, commonly known as a sink hole, under the field of Stadium Bowl caused a few athletic games late this week to be rescheduled to new sites: • Stadium High's girls soccer game with Mountain View will be at 5 p.m. today at Mount Tahoma Stadium. Jennifer Kubista, the director of athletics for the Tacoma Public Schools, said maintenance crews noticed problems with the Stadium Bowl turf last week. Saturday, the turf was pulled back, and a crater of loose dirt was discovered. Crews will be working on the problem all weekend, Kubista said, and some of the stadium's turf will be replaced.

Lakes' Calvin Schmidtke finished 20 of 27 for 272 yards and three touchdowns in his debut for the Lancers, as Lakes handled the Tides. Lakes held Gig Harbor to 133 yards of total offense. Heralded Lakes tight end Kavario Middleton finished with seven receptions for 64 yards. And teammate wide receiver Jermaine Kearse had four grabs for 82 yards, including a 51-yard score. For the first game of the year it was a well-played contest with few penalties and no turnovers. Despite the loss Gig Harbor coach Darren McKay felt his team competed well and that the game against Lakes will only help his team get better. Lakes HIgh coach Dave Miller echoed similar comments, believing his team will improve as the season goes on. Miller also said he believes Gig Harbor will be a playoff team at the end of the year.

Lakes and Gig Harbor traded possessions in the first half. But the Lancers got on the scoreboard first on an 14-play, 87-yard drive. Calvin Schmidtke hit Koreye Dixon on a 12-yard seam route to put the Lancers up 7-0 with 11:56 left in the second quarter. Lakes marched down the field on another long scoring drive just before the end of the first half, with Schmidtke punching it in from a yard out for a Lakes 14-0 lead. Schmidtke finished 11 of 15 for 112 yards and a touchdown in the first half. Tight end Kavario Middleton was his favorite target, grabbing five balls for 43 yards. Lakes dominted the time of possession in the first half, with a 16:02 to 7:58 advantage. Franklin Pierce finished off Selah 54-6 in the noon game.

We're at halftime in the second game at Qwest Field and Franklin Pierce is handling Selah 25-0. Franklin Pierce quarterback Erich Armstrong is putting up Playstation numbers so far. Armstrong is 6 of 11 for 202 yards and three touchdowns. Max Lutton has three catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns. In the first game of the event Royal, a Class 1A power from east of the Cascades defeated Eatonville 34-23. The biggest game of the day is Lakes vs. Gig Harbor. We'll have regular updates for you here. And you can also listen to the game on the radio at KGHP 93.7. That's all for now, but I'll check back in at the end of the Franklin Pierce-Selah game.
