An Auburn cheerleader finds out what it's like to get hit by some football players. The best part of this whole thing is that she wasn't seriously injured. It just goes to show how tough cheerleaders really can be.

The senior tailback from Graham-Kapowsin continued his magical season, racking up an unofficial 260 yards and four touchdowns against Emerald Ridge in a 42-14 win on Thursday.

That puts Smith, who came in with an SPSL record 1,760 yards, at 2,020 for the season.

Not bad for a kid that was on JV for most of last season.

If you check out my story, you'll see that Smith also had to miss part of the first quarter after missing practice this week for a dentist appointment.

Besides the win, G-K clinched the final playoff berth for the SPSL South.

Ashleigh Pollard, Rogers
Volleyball

The junior outside hitter for the Rams, and perhaps the best player in the South Sound, helped the Rams lock up their second straight SPSL South regular season title. Pollard racked up 22 kills, 18 digs, three aces and two blocks Tuesday in the title clincher against Puyallup. Last week, she racked up 34 kills, 46 digs and nine aces in two matches last week.

Describe the atmosphere other night when you beat Puyallup to clinch the SPSL South title.
It was just really intense and eveyrone was having a lot of fun. It felt good. It was packed, all of the bleachers were full and it was really loud. I like games like that when all bleachers are full and everything is intense.

It was second year in a row that Rogers won the SPSL South title. Was it tougher this year or last year?
It was tougher last year because we didn’t really know what to expect. We weren’t much of a winning program before last year. This year we know how each other plays and we knew what to expect and how to win.

With so many players coming back, could you imagine not winning the title?
If we lost, that would have been horrible, I couldn’t imagine us losing.

You have a different spelling of your name. How many people spell your name wrong?
Pretty much everyone, all of my teachers. The only people who spell it right are people that know me. Everyone else spells it A-S-H-L-E-Y. And they pronounce it, like Ash-Lay, or Ash-League.

When you are playing well and racking up kills in a match, do you know you are doing it?
No, I am so zoned out. People ask me, “Are you having fun?” I have to tell them I’m having fun. I get so focused out there I never notice how many kills I’m getting. I don’t really notice, but everyone else does.

How important is team chemistry to volleyball?
To me its so important, if you don’t have good chemistry, teams don’t usually perform well. You need to build it from the start. I think our team has that.

What’s your thoughts on wearing the tight spandex shorts for volleyball?
I grew up around volleyball so I’m used to seeing girls wearing them and I wanted to be just like them. When I started wearing them when I was younger, I wasn’t comfortable and I pull them down super low. I’m used to them now. They’re comfy.

Which is a better feeling a booming kill or a stuff block?
A booming kill. I don’t get many blocks, when I do, it feels so good, but I have to go with the kill.

Do you ever talk trash after a big kill?
No. I’ve given a few girls a facial (hit them in face with a spike) and stuff. The crowd usually will go, “ooohh!!) and I don’t even notice. I don’t get cocky like that.

Do you ever feel bad about hitting someone in the face?
Nope

Do you take it personally if somebody blocks you?
Yes cause I shouldn’t get blocked. It depends on the blocker, if she’s 5-5, it makes me mad, but if the blocker is 6-4 it isn’t as bad. It makes me more determined. Last night, I got blocked, and I was like, ‘Give me the ball again,’ and I got a kill on next play because I was so angry.

Is there ever such a thing as too much screaming in volleyball?
No. Never. Our team gets frustrated if we don’t get scream enough. It gets us so pumped up. Even when we aren’t playing a really competitive team, we still like to scream a lot. It gives us energy.

What song is playing on your iPod right now?
Some song from Linkin Park, I can’t remember the name. I listen to it before every game and it gets me so pumped up.

What’s one TV show you can’t miss?
“The Hills” I love that show, even though it’s so stupid or “House.” I also have to watch “Desperate Housewives” on Sundays.

We ask all girls this: How many times have you seen the movie, “The Notebook”?
Oh my gosh, it’s my favorite movie. I’ve probably seen it like 20 times.

How many times do you cry?
Every time.

They have movies about football, baseball, basketball and even soccer and gymnastics, why is there no movies about volleyball?
I don’t know. There was this really lame movie about volleyball that MTV did, and I watched this and I was like, “What the heck is this?”

If they made a movie about the Rogers Rams vollyeball team, who would you want to play you?
Katie Holmes

Seth Bridges, Lakes
Cross Country

Bridges is having his best year when it matters most, his senior season. The Lakes standout is coming off medalist honors at the Western Cascade conference meet, where he beat out the nearest competitor by almost 45 seconds. Bridges will now prepare for Saturday’s Westside Classic at American Lake Golf Course.

What’s the ideal weather to run in?
About 58 degrees, very little wind with just a little bit of sprinkling rain.

Why the rain?
It helps keep you cool.

How often do you actually get those ideal conditions?
I think just once or twice the entire time I’ve ran. The weather isn’t always that cooperative.

So if the weather is bad, can you block it out?
Every one is facing the condidtioins as me,. I just go out and run my best. But when you’re facing a stiff head win, it definitely enters your mind, but you just stomp it out and focus on racing.

What type of shoes do you wear?
For normal running, I wear the Adidas Supernova Classic. I’ve been wearing it since my sophomore year. I love that shoe. I probably go through five or six pairs a year.

Most runners don’t experiment with other shoes once they find a style they like, do they?
I like that the shoe never changes, that the design never changes. I try not to experiment.

In the last 400 yards of the race, what does your body feel like?
Your body’s hurting, but at that point you’re so close and the race is coming down to wire, you’re not thinking about it much, you’re just thinking about the finish line. But your body is hurting a lot. It’s painful.
It’s a good kind of pain, if you’re hurtin when you are coming in, it means you are running good race. I hope I never come through the line and not feel any pain.

Describe what you feel like in the moments just after a race?
When I’ve had a good race, it’s euphoric. I’m thinking yes, hallelujah, “Thank you, God.” When I’ve had bad race, I feel like falling down on the ground and laying there for a few days.

Are you own worst critic?
You could definitely say that. The main thing I nitpick myself about is not sticking as close to my opponents as I could and letting my opponents go.

Is it the worst thing to finish and feel like you have something left?
It’s pretty bad when you finish and feel like you could have done more. You never want to feel that.

So you’re friends with Gig Harbor cross country standout Miles Unterreiner, how did that happen?
We’re good buds. We met a few times as freshmen, but when we really made connection was our sophomroe year when raced against each other at the Tiger Classic. It was a really awesome race. When you have that, it brings you together like nothing else. It really cemented our friendship.

What’s it like to compete against a friend like that?
It’s really cool. Before the meet, you wish each other good luck and you mean it. And then you push yourself, you don’t give them anything and you don’t care if your friend or not, that’s it. Once you go across the line it’s great becauseyou’ve pushed each other so hard and competed like nuts. Afterward, you give each other a hug and say, “good race.”

Describe the course you’re running on this weekend for the Westside Classic?
It’s a golf course (American Lake Golf Course), so there’s a lot of good flats and downhills. There’s also some good hills. It’s a tough course, but a fast course. I’ve run it twice before and enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to running it.

Having run the Westside Classic twice before, how much does that experience help?
It helps a lot to know how to compete at that level. I know the ropes and no what to expect, so I won’t panic and go out too fast. The first time I ran it, I was very nervous and I didn’t have a good way to start out. Five minutes before the race started, I noticed I didn’t have any spikes in shoes. We had to do a NASCAR-style spike change just before the race started.

How much a difference does in your performance if you like the course as opposed to disliking a particular course?
Ideally, it shouldn’t make a differencet at all. But in reality, it does. If you feel like a course is my friend, you feel like you will run well.

People tend to think you get out and just run, but is there some strategy?

I don’t use too much race strategy. I try to race and respond. I just try to be ready to respond for whatever gets thrown at you.

Hills: Good or bad for you?
I like hills, some people say I’m crazy, but I enjoy hills running hills.

What’s your pre-race routine like?
I usually do a warm up jog. You have to get a good warm up in, you don’t want to pull a muscle. They I do some drills. I always say a prayer before the race. Then I get on the line, and get ready to give it all I got.

If you had to recommend a book to somebody what would it be?
I’d have to recommend the Bible personally. It’s got everything you need.

You live no Anderson Island, is it big enough for long training runs?
Oh yeah, there are a few good long runs with some tough hills out here.

Could you run all the way around the perimeter of the island?
I never tried it, but I’ve always wanted to see if I could.

A few weeks back, we went over the possible football playoff scenarios for the local leagues. I figured it’s time for a little update. All records listed are league records. (Note Narrows League update to come on Thursday)

SPSL North (3 spots)
Who’s in: Federal Way (5-0)
Who’s out: Decatur (0-5) and Jefferson (1-4)
Who’s on the bubble: Kentwood (4-1), Kentridge (4-1), Kent-Meridian (2-3), Tahoma (2-3), Kentlake (2-3).
What’s next: The Eagles aren’t just satisified with being in the playoffs. They’re looking to capture their first league title since 1976 with a win over Kentridge, Friday night. Basically, all the Chargers or Conqs have to do is win one of their two remaining games. For Kentridge, a win over Federal Way could lead to a league title. If not, the Chargers will have to defeat Kent-Meridian next Friday to secure a spot. Kentwood needs to beat either Tahoma on Friday or Kentlake next week to get in. If the Chargers or Conqs lose both remaining games, it leaves the door open for one of the 2-3 teams to force a tie.

SPSL South (4 spots)
Who’s in: No one just yet, Puyallup (4-1), Graham-Kapowsin (4-1), Rogers (4-1) are in the best position.
Who’s out: Beamer (0-5), Spanaway Lake (0-5), Curtis (2-3)
Who’s on the bubble: Besides the three 4-1 teams, Bethel (3-2) and Emerald Ridge (3-2) are still alive
What’s next: It’s probably a good thing there’s four berths for this league parity its shown thus far. All the 4-1 teams need to do is win one of their two remaining games to lock up a spot. The winner of Thursday’s G-K vs. Rogers game would lock up a spot. Puyallup faces a pesky Curtis squad. Bethel and Emerald Ridge basically need to win out to be certain of a spot. However, the two teams meet at Sparks Stadium on Friday, so the loser could be all but eliminated from the postseason. The Jags has the tougher of the two roads, if they were to knock off Bethel, they would still have to beat Graham-Kapowsin in their regular season finale. If Bethel were to win on Friday, they’d need to knock off rival Spanaway Lake. As always, Puyallup and Rogers square off in the last weekend of the season, and like last year, the winner could get in, and the loser go home.

SPSL 3A (3 and half)
Who’s in: Franklin Pierce (5-0), Auburn (4-1)
Who’s out: Sumner (0-5), White River (1-4), Enumclaw (2-3)
Who’s on the bubble: Auburn Riverside (3-2), Bonney Lake (3-2), Auburn Mountainview (2-3).
What’s next: Officially there are three guaranteed playoff spots for the SPSL 3A, the fourth place team will get a “pigtail” or “play-in” game against the fourth-place team from the Seamount to join that spot. FP is in and has a league title in its sights. One win will lock up a league title. Auburn is also in. Even if the Trojans were able to win out and FP were to lose once, FP won the regular season matchup. Riverside defeated Bonney Lake earlier in the season, so they would have the edge for third spot. Bonney Lake needs to win one of its final games to lock up the fourth spot. Auburn Mountainview would need to win the final two games, and for Bonney Lake or Riverisde to lose the last two to have a chance to get the pigtail game.

Western Cascade (3 spots)
Who’s in: Lakes (5-0). The Lancers have secured the league title and face the No. 3 from the Kingco.
Who’s out: Yelm (0-4)
Who’s on the bubble: Everybody else: Shelton (3-1), Timberline (2-2), Capital (2-2), North Thurston (2-3), Clover Park (1-3)
What’s next: Well, it would take a minor miracle, which includes wins over Lakes and Shelton for Clover Park, to have a slime chance at best. North Thurston needs to beat Timberline on Friday and get some help. Shelton needs just one win over Clover Park on Friday or Capital next week to get in. Timberline and Capital would need to win both remaining games to feel secure. A split would mean they’d need outside help.

Evergreen (4 spots)
Who’s in: Tumwater (5-0), W.F. West (4-1)
Who’s out: Mathematically? No one.
Who’s on the bubble: Everybody else.
What’s next: Centralia (3-2) and River Ridge (3-2) need a win in their final two games to get in. Aberdeen (2-3) needs two wins to lock up a spot, while the rest Hoquiam, Elma and Black Hills at 1-4 need to win out and get some help from others. None of three 1-4 teams plays the other in the final two weeks.

Nisqually 2A (2 spots)
Who’s in: No one
Who’s out: Washington
Who’s on the bubble: Fife (2-0), Steilacoom (2-0), Eatonville (2-1), Foster (0-2)
What’s next: Eatonville only has one league game remaining, so a win over Fife on Friday would secure a spot. The Trojans can lock up a spot with a win as well. Steilacoom wraps up with Foster and Fife, meaning a win over Foster is a must. With that, the Sentinels already own a win over Eatonville, so they would basically have a spot in the playoffs even with a loss to Fife.

Nisqually 1A/2B (3 spots)
Who’s in: Life Christian has secured a 2B playoff spot.
Who’s out: Chimacum (0-4),
Who’s on the bubble: Cascade Christina (4-0), Orting (4-0), Cedar Park Christian (2-1), Charles Wright (0-3), Vashon (0-3).
What’s next: Cascade Christian and Orting are basically in with 4-0 records. All they need is one win in their final two league games, with one being against each other. Cedar Park Christian needs to win two of three to feel safe, while Charles Wright and Vashon need to win out and get some help.

Max Manthou, Kentwood
Tennis

If he continues to play tennis, Manthou could win four state singles title. Widely regarded as one of the top amateur players in the Northwest, Manthou won state 4A as a freshman and has basically toyed with opponents as a sophomore, rarely dropping a point in his matches.

How different is high school tennis in comparison to the junior tennis you play during the summer?

It’s a lot different. Obviously, the talent level is a lot lower, but I think it can be much more fun. I like the camraderie with the guys on team. It seems to be a much bigger deal.

You also play basketball, which do you like better?
Basketball is my favorite sport. I don’t know what it is if it’s the team aspect or what, but I have lot more fun.

For people who don’t follow tennis, explain how good Roger Federer is?
Roger Federer is to tennis what Tiger Woods is to golf. In fact, he might even be better. He pretty much wins every time he steps on the court. Tiger doesn’t always do that.

You can’t help but marvel at his consistency, can you?
Yeah, he’s so prepared every time he steps on court. He brings it every time. He doesn’t look all flashy, but he brings the same game every time and wins. Most people don’t understand how good he really is.

When you have a regular practice day in the summer for instance, describe the workout?

I usually go with my coach, Jesse Walter, usually hit for two to three hours, it’s a real grind fest. Then I do a bunch drills for an hour and then play a match. I don’t usually go too long.

How hard can you hit a serve?
I’d say 115 (miles per hour). I serve pretty well, I guess it could be better

Does high school tennis ever get boring?
Yeah, maybe just because nobody can really push you. I can keep myself pretty amused. I have fun through my teammates and how they do. I do some coaching with them. I like to see if they take my advice how it affects their game.”

Would you ever wear the long shorts like Rafael Nadal?
You mean, the capris? No. I might wear a pair of baggy shorts that look a little too long, but not on purpose. But he’s getting a million dollars a year to do it.

If they paid you a million dollars a year to wear the capris, would you?

For a million dollars? I guess if I didn’t have any other option.

How often do you need your rackets restrung?
I break strings probably every two to three days. I have about five rackets so I keep rotating them.

How many different surfaces have you played on?
I’ve played hard and clay and I guess carpet.

What’s your favorite?
Hard indoor is probably my favorite because it’s what I practice on the most because of the rain. I played pretty well on clay but you get really dirty. I’ve always wanted to play on grass.

Be honest could you beat Maria Sharapova?
No. In about a year, or maybe a year and half I could beat her. I could probably beat women up to the top 150. My coach could probably beat anyone in the 10 in the women.

What song is playing on your iPod right now?
TNT (by AC/DC) I guess it kind of flows. I listen to a lot of classical rock like Led Zeppelin.

How many times do you check your myspace page?
I don’t have internet at my house, I don’t have cable and I don’t have a phone. So I pretty much check it whenever I get the chance and there’s internet.

Since you play hoops for Kentwood as well, how cool would it be to dunk a basketball?

It would be the greatest thing I’ve ever done in my life because I’m so short.

How big is fellow Kentwood sophomore and basketball star Josh Smith?
Oh wow, I think he’s 6-10, he wears a 19 shoe and he’s supposed to grow. He’s mammoth.

How many times has he blocked one of your shots?
I played against him in 8th grade since we went to different junior highs. And I did have a broken finger in the game. I think he swatted me five times.

Brittany Orr, Beamer
Soccer

Orr, along with teammate Holland Crook, provide the scoring punch for the undefeated Titans (9-0). Orr scored three goals in Beamer’s big 4-1 win over Puyallup and she also had a goal in a 3-0 win over Graham-Kapowsin.

How well is your team playing right now?
We’re undefeated and we’re playing really well collectively as a team. Last year we had some kinks, but this year, we’re playing really well.

Did you know would be this good?
I expected to be this good, because I have high expectations. I would have been disappointed if we weren’t this good.

Do you have a special celebration when you score a goal?
Umm, kind of, I just started this one thing where I point to the back of my jersey like the Seahawks do. It’s kind of inside joke. We were talking about it and my friend, Holland, said ‘you better do that when you score.’ So I do.

If you knew you wouldn’t get in trouble, how would you like to celebrate a goal?
That’s difficult so many things you could do. I guess I could do the Brandi Chastain and rip off the shirt and slide across the ground on your knees.

Grass or field turf?
I really like grass if it’s nice, but if it’s not nice grass field then I prefer field turf. Anything but astro turf. That’s horrible and we have to play on it.

What did you think of Hope Solo criticizing Brianna Scurry after the U.S. lost in the semifinals?

I’d say it’s not very professional. I know everybody thinks they made a mistake by playing Scurry. But it was kind of unprofessional for her to come out and say it like she did.

As a player, do you understand where Solo was coming from?
Yeah, I’d be really frustrated too. I wouldn’t know how I handle in that situation. Being a professional athlete you kind of in the spotlight, you’d think she would know better.

People might not be able to see it, but how describe how physical girls soccer can be?
I know some games I have the most fouls on the team because I get really frustrated. People hack, people push, there’s a girl on our team that will just lay someone out. She’s a defender and the strongest girl I know. I’m glad she’s on my team. When someone starts whining about an injury, I just say, ‘Hey, this isn’t ballet, this is soccer get over it.’

It seems like there is an abundance of good soccer players in the Federal Way area, what’s the reason?
I don’t know if there’s a reason. I’ve played a lot of girls from high schools teams, we all have had good coaches. I know we had good coaches when we were little. There’s a lot of good programs, Washington Premier, the Federal Way Reign and the team I play on, a lot of players come from those teams.

What song is playing on your iPod right now?
“Hands Down” by Dashboard Confesisional. It’s my favorite song. Me and my sister always sing along all the time. Just turn it up really loud. It’s still a good song. I never get tired of it.

What’s one TV show you can’t miss?
I’m not going to lie, I’m not a TV watcher, not at all. This is senior year so I am out doing lot of stuff, hanging with my friends, myspace it sometimes, homework and trying to make it a good year.

How many times a day to you check your myspace?
I would say I log in twice and be on there for about half hour. I’m not obsessed. Some people are ridiculous.

How many times have you seen “The Notebook?”
A hundred times and I cry every time. Every time.

How many times have you seen “Bend it like Beckham?”
I’ve seen that one a few times. It’s kind of corny, but it’s still a good one.

If they were making a soccer movie about the Beamer soccer team, who would play you?

Kiera Knightley.

How cool would it be to finish the season undefeated?
That would be amazing that is personally my goal and lot of girls goal is to go undefeated and win state. We could do it if we play to our potential. We’re really shooting for that ring. In fact, that’s one of our pregame cheers.”

From the Eastern Washington University Sports Information Dept. ...
For years, Aaron Boyce has watched his good friend Rodney Stuckey take his tremendous basketball ability to the national stage.

Now it's Boyce's turn -- in football.

After a record-breaking performance at Montana on Saturday (Oct. 6), the sophomore wide receiver was selected by The Sports Network as the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Offensive Player of the Week.

Boyce, a 2005 graduate of Kentwood High School in Kent, Wash., had the fourth-most catches in Big Sky history with a school-record 17. He finished the 24-23 loss to top-ranked Montana with 232 receiving yards to rank second in school history.

"It's pretty rewarding, but it would have felt better with a win," said Boyce, whose team had a 565-289 advantage in total offense in the game. "It was a frustrating game to lose and sort of puts a chip on our shoulder. We came up short but that adds to our hunger to play better and win next time."

Boyce played just one season of football at Kentwood and was better known there as a teammate of Stuckey, who led Kentwood to the Washington State 4A Championship in the 2003-04 season. Stuckey went on to earn national Freshman of the Year honors at Eastern, as well as a pair of honorable mention All-America accolades, before becoming a first-round draft choice by the Detroit Pistons in last June's NBA Draft.

"Aaron is a converted basketball player who is becoming a really good football player," said Eagle head coach Paul Wulff . "He has a lot of upside and still has room for improvement. He has a bright future ahead of him if he keeps working hard."

Boyce had long catches of 41, 37 (touchdown), 28 and 24 yards, and caught six passes for 116 yards in the third quarter alone against the Grizzlies. He only had one catch for seven yards in the first quarter. He played much of the game at an inside receiver position usually held by fellow sophomore Tony Davis, who missed the game with shoulder injury.

"He had a great day, especially considering he was playing a new position," said Wulff. "He did a great job adapting and caught everything that was thrown his way. It was a very solid performance."

Through five games this season, Boyce has already caught 41 passes for 593 yards and five touchdowns to rank third in FCS in receptions (8.2 per game) and fourth in receiving yards (118.6). Last year as a redshirt freshman, Boyce caught 35 passes for 471 yards and three scores.

Boyce was four catches away from the Big Sky single game record of 21 set by David Pandt of Montana State against Eastern Washington in 1986. The previous school record for catches was 13 set on three previous occasions -- 1968 by Bob Picard, 1976 by Tom Bassett and 1986 by Jon Vea.

His yardage mark ranks only behind the record of 264 set by Jason Anderson in 1994 against Montana when he had a 99-yard pass reception. Eastern lost that game to the Grizzlies, also in Missoula, by a 49-29 margin.

Eastern quarterback Matt Nichols also had a remarkable day last Saturday with a school-record 37 completions on 59 attempts for 451 yards -- all career highs in just the 15th start of his EWU career. His yardage total was the third-most in school history and just 35 yards from the school record of 486 set by Todd Bernett against Montana in 1994.

"I've never been around a receiving performance like that, let alone a game when a team has thrown it 59 times," added Wulff. "Hopefully we'll see that kind of production down the road as those players and our offense continues to develop."

Here's this week's athletes of the week that appeared in today's (10-4) paper.

A.J. Wilson, Curtis
Football

Wilson did more in one game than many players do in a season. Despite dislocating his shoulder the week before, the senior running back/defensive back scored six touchdowns and racked up 409 yards of total offense. Wilson ran for three touchdowns, caught two touchdown passes and returned a punt for a score. He almost had a seventh, just missing out on an interception return for a touchdown.

Have you ever scored that many touchdowns in a game before?
Not in high school, but I did when I was younger and playing for the UP Little Viks. One game I had like 11, and I had eight in a game a couple times.

Were you one of the little guys on the field back then too?
Actually, I was bigger than everybody back then, I’ve pretty much been the same size since seventh grade. I’ve just gotten stronger.

You realize you could have had seven TDs with that interception?
Yeah. My right shoulder was bothering me and I didn’t know if I wanted to stretch out there. I still wanted to make a play so I just knocked it down. You’re making me want to go back and pick it off.

Describe what it feels like to dislocate a shoulder?
Oh man, it’s horrible. When it’s popped out it hurts, there’s like a pressure on it. It was so painful. I was screaming for a little bit.

Did it hurt when they put it back in?
When they put it back in felt better, all that pressure was gone. I was trying to get the coaches to put me back in game.

Were you sore on Saturday after Friday’s game?
I was a little, but not too much. It was just from moving it a lot.

Do you ever get made fun of being short by your teammates?
Not really, sometimes they tease me a bit about how much bigger their feet and hands are.

What advantages are there for being smaller?
Oh there’s a lot. If I could just run behind the line, it’s hard for the defense to see me. I just get out and go. I kind of like it.

How many things have to go right to return a punt for a touchdown?
A lot. I just tell everybody, if they can get a shoulder pad on somebody and maintain their blocks then I’ll get in there.

What song is your playing on your iPod right now?
It would probably be a song by Lil’ Wayne. I like the song “The sky is the limit.” I listen to it before every game. I have to have my Wayne, it’s a must.

Name a player you like to follow on football field?
Probably, Reggie Bush. The way he can cut at the speed he’s going it’s crazy. At school, some people call me “Lil Reggie.” I just love the way he can make people miss, that’s what I try to do. And he’s always helping the team in different ways like running receiving, returning kicks, that’s what I like.

Is there anything worse than practicing in the rain?
For me it doesn’t bother me. I can practice in rain no big deal, as long as I’m on the field. Last week when I wasn’t on field it was killing me. I was like, ‘Coach, I gotta have pads on.’ I don’t like being off the field.

It’s been a year of new coaches, how has the adjustment been?
It’s not really that big of a deal. You just have to adjust. For us, we’ve only had one year at high school without Coach (Clay) Angle. And he coached us in junior high. I wouldn’t have wanted them to have chosen anybody else. He’s just hardnosed football guy. That’s the way he wants us to play. I don’t mind that at all.

You and quarterback Chad Rasmussen both play on the hoops team. Can Chad block one of your shots?

Oh yeah, he probably has a couple of times. He’s a great basketball player besides football.

Can you block one of his shots?
No, but I give a hard body shots a couple of times. I probably only get up as high as his elbow, but he’s not as beefy as me and I’ll use that to my advantage.

Brooke Nelson, Cascade Christian
Volleyball

Nelson is a big reason why the Cougars volleyball team is a perfect 9-0 this season. In last weeks’ 3-2 win over Cedar Park Christian, Nelson, just a junior, put up ridiculously good numbers — 34 kills and 43 digs. The Cougars, who made it to the 1A state tournament last year, should make a run again this year as one of the top teams in the Nisqually League.

Did you know you were having such a monster game?
Actually I didn’t. I was just so in the moment and just focusing on playing. It was probably the best game I’ve ever played.

How important is team chemistry to volleyball?
It’s extremely important because it’s played in such a small area. If one person’s down it’s going to bring the other people down.

Which is a better feeling a booming kill or a stuff block?
I’m going to say the kill because you aren’t doing it by yourself. For a good kill, you have to have to good pass and a good set and every component of the team. For a block, you’re getting it just by yourself.

Do you ever talk trash after a big kill or a block.
Not usually (followed by giggles. It depends what kind of mood I’m in.

There seems to be a lot of emotion in volleyball, what’s it like on the floor after a big play?

You all come together and you cheer really loud and really excited for that person. There’s a lot of emotions. There’s a lot of screaming and lot of yelling.

Do you have set cheers for every good play in volleyball?
It depends, most of the time we do. We’ve have them for the past three years, so they’re basically the same.

Have you ever hit someone in the face with a spike?
Yes. I felt really bad when I did it actually.

Does it hurt to dig a hard spike?
Not really. It probably does at the beginning of each season. Once you get used it to it stops because your arms get used to it.

What song is playing on your iPod right now?
Probably, “How great is our God.” I’m actually listening to CD in my car right now.

What’s one TV show can’t miss?
“The Hills.”

Does every teenage girl watch “The Hills?”
Yeah, I think so. It’s like the best show ever?

Team Heidi or Team Lauren?
Team Lauren.

If you had to watch one movie over and over, what would it be?
“A Walk to Remember.” I’m a girly girl. It’s a chick flick. It’s so sad though.

I’m sure the Notebook would be runner-up?
Yes it would. That’s good too.

Can you make a guarantee to be back at state this year?
Not really, it’s a different tournament to get in this year, but we have a good chance. But you have to play really good in that tournament to make it actual state tournament.

What’s the best thing going to smaller school like Cascade Christian?
You get to know every one, and you know a lot more people at your school and close to those people. The teachers also get to know you better than in a public school because there’s not so many people in your class.

What’s your thoughts on wearing the tight spandex shorts for volleyball?
I like them if they’re long enough, but if they’re too short, they’re uncomfortable to play in.
