CHANDLER, Ariz. — The Auburn Riverside girls basketball team lost for the first time in 11 months Thursday.
After running through competition and closing a 2006-2007 campaign with a 27-2 record and the 3A state title, the Ravens opened the season with four straight wins before running into national No. 1 Notre Dame Academy (7-0).
The top-ranked Dragons used a 14-9 third quarter to pull away from Auburn Riverside, 51-41, and advance to Friday's semifinal round of the Nike Tournament of Champions in Chandler, Ariz.
It was Auburn Riverside's first loss since Jan. 15, when the Ravens lost to Redondo Union High in California.
The Ravens, now 4-1 this season, stuck with the Dragons for much of the first half, heading into the locker room behind by just two points, 22-20.
But Florida-bound Azania Stewart and her teammates turned it on in the second half, while the Ravens' shooting went cold. Stewart finished with 20 points.
Auburn Riverside sophomore Mercedes Wetmore led the Ravens with 18 points, including four three-pointers, while senior Katie Grad added 12.
"Our kids play hard," coach Adam Barrett said. "We didn't knock down shots as we normally do, but give them credit. They're good."
Regardless of the outcome, Barrett and his team had a somewhat positive outlook on the 10-point loss to the nation's top team.
"It was an amazing feeling," said Wetmore. "Only four teams every year get to play the number one team (at the TOC), so we wanted it bad. But they're just that good."
Barrett concurred.
"That was just the experience of a lifetime," Barrett said. "To get to play the number one team to a two-point ballgame at the half...but in the second half, we just didn't have answers."
That's just as well, since Notre Dame Academy coach Mike Teasley showered Auburn Riverside with praise after the game.
"I loved them," Teasley said. "They get after it. ... He's playing a lot of kids, they're coming at you, they're interchanging, they're stroking the three, they keep coming back. They're tough."
The Ravens move to a consolation bracket with a chance to finish fifth in the tournament. They face Sequoyah, of Tahlequah, Okla., Friday at 12:40 p.m. PST.

So Ryan made me look like a liar by not putting up his rankings last week (nudge, nudge), but perhaps he'll get to them in the next few days as an early Christmas present for all the South Sound basketball fans (although I know better than to make any concrete promises on his behalf).

Speaking of Ryan, if you didn't see it, his wrestling preview on Graham-Kapowsin's Brad Sweet ran last week. My boys swimming preview runs in tomorrow's paper (on a good group of guys from Capital), and we have gymnastics and bowling stories scheduled for next Thursday.

I probably won't get to an updated set of girls' rankings this week, as I'm actually down in Phoenix (where it's currently clear and 61 degrees...) at the Nike Tournament of Champions. Northwest teams Auburn Riverside (yeah, those Ravens) and Southridge (Beaverton, Ore.) both won their first round games today. My intention is to post new rankings in six days (for those of you keeping score, that would be Dec. 25).

And if you're absolutely at a loss for preps coverage, leave us a note to keep us informed of players or teams we may be missing (or saving for later in the season).

It might still be early in the season, but it's far enough in that we wanted to kick off our rankings — top 10 in 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A, as well as our Area Top 10 (all classes). These are the girls' rankings; Ryan should be by later today with the boys' rankings.

Here's the Area Top-10:
Area top-10
1. Auburn Riverside (1-0)
2. Mount Tahoma (3-0)
3. Bellarmine (2-1)
4. Kentwood (3-1)
5. Lakes (3-0)
6. Tumwater (1-0)
7. Auburn (4-0)
8. Capital (5-0)
9. River Ridge (3-0)
10. Kentlake (4-1)

Top 10s for 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A are after the jump. Feel free to leave some thoughts and, if we missed any great schools, there's always next week.

The Narrows League is a losing a school.

North Kitsap will leave the Narrows Bay Division and join the Olympic League, Bellarmine Prep athletic director Ed Ploof confirmed this afternoon. He also said Olympia is considering joining the Western Cascade Conference.

The Narrows League realignment committee will meet on Dec. 11 to finalize any moves.

The chart accompanying today's story on realignment left off Bethel in the SPSL South. The Braves will stay in the SPSL South.

South Sound athletic conferences will take on new looks for the 2008-09 school year.

Enrollment counts were finalized last week and some schools have been reclassified. Auburn and Auburn Riverside will move up to Class 4A and join the SPSL, Auburn athletic director Bob Jones confirmed today. I'm working on getting the details on how the schools will be divided into divisions.

Auburn Mountainview will remain in the SPSL 3A. Franklin Pierce was reclassified as a 2A school, missing the cutoff by 1.5 students, but will opt-up to 3A and remain in the SPSL 3A, said Wendy Malich, Franklin Pierce School District athletic director.

Clover Park and Lakes have applied for admission into the SPSL 3A. Lakes athletic director Joe Keller said. Peninsula has also been given an application, said Malich, who also is president of the SPSL athletic directors. SPSL 3A principals will make a decision on Lakes' and Clover Park's application at its regularly scheduled meeting on Jan. 7, Malich said.

We're tied at halftime. Bothell moved the ball on its first drive, but hasn't done much since. Lewis and Clark has found some rhythm on offense, but not enough to score more than one touchdown.

Steven Eglet hit Alex Gauper in the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown, tying the score with 4 minutes, 28 seconds left in the second quarter.

LC running back Alex Shaw is carrying the Tigers. He already has 12 rushes for 53 yards.

Categories: athletics
Posted by Doug Pacey @ 07:22:12 pm

We're about 20 minutes to kickoff of the Class 4A state title game and the Lewis and Clark stands are just starting to fill up. That's because six LC rooter buses got stuck in snowy weather while crossing Snoqualmie Pass.

My prediction: Bothell 27, LC 17

The third quarter has just ended and DeSales is still going strong.

Toutle Lake finally cracked the Irish's 25-yard line, but ended up turning the ball over on downs after losig yards on three straight plays.

DeSales is well on its way to the Class 2B state title with a big lead at halftime.

The Irish kicked a field goal with six seconds left in the first half.

The Knights avenged their 23-20 regular-season loss to the Eagles, beating Connell for the Class 1A state title.

Categories: athletics
Posted by Doug Pacey @ 03:16:14 pm

Royal has extended its lead over Connell, with quarterback Auston Allred scoring on a 7-yard run halfway through the fourth-quarter to take a commanding advantage over the Eagles.

Connell edged Royal 23-20 in the regular seson, but it looks like the Knights will win the game that matters most.
