Ferris' DeAngelo Casto and Prairie's Ashely Corral have been voted the state boys and girls basketball players of the year by the Associated Press.

Sports writers from around the state vote for these postseason honors.

The AP reported that six boys received votes for state player of the year honors, with Casto edging teammate Shawn Stockton. Corral was a near-unanimous selection.

Bellarmine Prep's Abdul Gaddy and Avery Bradley were first-team selections. This is the second year in a row Bradley has been voted to the team. Kavario Middleton made the 3A first team for the second straight season. Charles Wright's Gerald Hill was a boys 1A first-team choice.

Auburn Riverside's Katie Grad was named the 3A girls player of the year and Lakes' Sara Halasz was a first-team selection. River Ridge's Sophie Russell was a first-team pick in 2A.

Reporter Mindi Rice passes along this note about Prairie point guard Ashley Corral...

Prairie's Ashley Corral, who played in the McDonald's All-American game todayin Milwaukee, won Monday's Three-Point Shootout. The Southern Cal-bound senior hit 16 3-pointers in the first round, five more than the next competitor, and 15 in the second round to win the girls' 3-point event.

The Prairie guard was the only Washington player -- boy or girl -- selected for this year's McDonald's All-American teams.

Corral was The News Tribune's State Player of the Year.

The high school basketball season may be over, but there's still basketball being played.

Amojo commits to Washington State

Chalk up another Pacific-10 Conference player for the Auburn Riverside girls basketball program.
Ireti Amojo, the German exchange student who played for the Ravens’ 2007 3A championship team, took an unofficial visit to Pullman over the weekend and decided to leave a Cougar, giving Washington State coach June Daugherty a verbal commitment.
“It’s just the perfect fit for Ireti,” Auburn Riverside coach Adam Barrett said. “The only people over here Ireti knows are with Riverside and the Grad family, and there are a lot of Riverside kids at WSU.”
Amojo, who lived with 2008 Cougar signee Katie Grad during her exchange year, is the first player to commit for Daugherty’s 2009 recruiting class. She has one year of school remaining in Germany.
Julie Futch, a 2006 graduate, is a sophomore on the Oregon State squad, while 2007 3A state tournament MVP Stephanie Wilber is a freshman with Arizona State’s program.

Auburn Riverside pulled out a 48-40 victory against Kennedy. It wasn't pretty, but the Ravens won their second straight title. There's a story in Sunday's paper, but the game ran a little late, so look for another story in Monday's TNT.

As for Oregon, this comes from the AP (I listened to part of the game on the radio before the Riverside game started)....Puyallup native Michael Meek's Southridge girls won their fourth straight Oregon title.

Southridge 49, Oregon City 43

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Senior center Michelle Jenkins scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Southridge to its fourth consecutive state championship with a hard-fought 49-43 victory over Oregon City on Saturday.
Southridge became the only school besides Oregon City to win four consecutive state titles at Oregon’s highest level.
After a ragged offensive performance in Friday’s semifinal victory over top-ranked Central Catholic, the Skyhawks came out with a determined effort in the first quarter of Saturday’s championship game.
The Hawks hit 7 of 13 shots in that period and had a commanding 18-6 lead heading into the second stanza. But Southridge scored just four points over the next eight minutes while committing eight turnovers.
That helped Oregon City whittle Southridge’s lead to 22-16 heading into the locker room at intermission.
Southridge regained its composure through the first five minutes of the third quarter while pushing its lead to a game-high 15-point margin at 36-21. Five different Southridge players tallied during that stretch but Jenkins, with four of those points, was the only one to score more than a basket.
Then, just as the game was on the verge of getting away from Oregon City, the Pioneers struck back with a 10-2 run that cut Southridge’s lead to 38-31 at the close of the third period. Lindsey Shearer spurred the comeback with a steal and two baskets.
The Skyhawks didn’t relinquish the momentum for long, though. Just as they did in their semifinal victory over Central Catholic, the Hawks used a stingy defense to keep Oregon City’s offense off-balance. By the midway point of the final period, Southridge’s lead had grown to 44-33.
Oregon City was able to make an impressive run after that, and got help from Southridge, which missed a string of free throws down the stretch.
That made it possible for Oregon City to score six unanswered points, which cut the deficit to 44-39 with 59 seconds left. A short time later, it was 47-43 after Kiara Tate hit one of two free throws for Southridge and Oregon City’s Karlie Gach answered with a length-of-the-court driving basket to make it 47-43.
But the comeback eventually ran out of time and Southridge managed to hang on for the win.
Jenkins and senior point guard Alex Earl, who finished with nine points and seven rebounds, were members of all four of Southridge’s championship teams.
Oregon City, which was led by Shearer’s 13 points and 10 by Melair Holterhoff, has the state’s best championship run. The Pioneers had a string of five straight titles form 1994 through 1999. They also won four straight from 2001 to 2004.

This was submitted for tomorrow's notebook but might end up getting cut for space, so I thought I'd throw it on the blog as well.

Starbird catches Lakes’ win

Former Lakes star Kate Starbird was in attendance Saturday at Hec Ed to take in Lakes’ win against Kamiakin for the fourth-place trophy.

Starbird, a 1993 graduate who went on to star at Stanford for four years, recently moved to Boulder, Colo., to begin a PhD program studying technology, society and education at the University of Colorado. When she heard the Lancers were playing in Seattle at the state tournament the same weekend she would be back in town, she hoped they’d make it to Saturday so she could watch them play.

After the game, Starbird joined the team on the court for a photo with their trophy.

“It was a pleasure having Kate here,” Lakes coach Dave McEachern said. “Just having her around, being part of the program and supporting the team from afar. She supports us from afar and we know that and appreciate that.”

The Lancers’ fourth-place finish Saturday was the first girls state basketball trophy since Starbird led Lakes to fifth-place finishes in 1991 and 1993.

It's 62-38 Lakes after three and, to be honest, I've stopped tracking the points (that's what post-game stat sheets are for!). Lakes went on a 21-1 run over a little more than four minutes to pretty much run the game out of reach.

Lakes will take the fourth-place trophy with the win, ending its season at 24-2, losing to only Kennedy and Auburn Riverside, the two teams playing for the title tonight.

Lakes grad Kate Starbird made a guest appearance at the game, watching her alma mater take home the fourth place trophy.

THIRD QUARTER
The Islanders made a mini-run midway into the quarter, scoring six in a row to climb within seven at 30-23.
Kyle Thurston put a quick end to that when he stepped behind the NBA 3-point line and canned his fifth big bomb of the game for a 33-23 lead.

HALFTIME
Steven Bjornstad punctuated a solid first half by Columbia River with a thunderous dunk late in the second quarter. The 6-9 junior, though, largely gave the spotlight over to teammate Kyle Thurston, whose 14 points leads all scorers.

FIRST QUARTER
Kyle Thurston began the game by hitting his first four shots, including three 3-pointers, as the Chieftains bolted in front of the Islanders, 15-6, after the first quarter.

Thurston is no stranger to the 3-pointer, though. He's made 46 percent of his shots from behind the arc this season.

Let's revisit the 4A boys state tournament for a moment. Ferris became the first 4A school in state history to go back-to-back in undefeated seasons, dominating Federal Way 68-44 in the title game.

Saxons coach Don Van Lierop proclaimed his team the best ever in Washington.

Pat Fitterer, coach of the 1996 Sehome Mariners, does not agree. Fitterer's Mariners are the only team in state history to go 30-0. Sehome throttled Decatur 81-42 in the finals.

"The biggest difference is that we played all 12 guys, not just our top six," Fitterer said, referring to Ferris' not-so-deep bench. "We ranked No. 5 in the nation by USA Today at the end of our season."

Both teams were loaded with college-caliber athletes. Five Ferris players have already accepted athletic scholarships in basketball, football or baseball, and DeAngelo Casto is being recruited by the Washington State and Gonzaga basketball programs. Sehome's starting five played college ball, too. Among them, Mark Spink played at Gonzaga and Jared Stevenson set the career-scoring mark at Western Washington University.

Something else to consider is how they played their toughest competition. Sehome faced league-rival Mount Vernon three times that season and the Bulldogs were ranked No. 2 in 4A each time. The Mariners won those games by 15, 19 and 22 points, Fitterer said. By comparison, Ferris played a top-five Shadle Park team four times, beating it by 5, 3, 20 and 5 points.

"We just kept getting better each time," Fitterer said.

Who's better? Sehome or Ferris? I say Sehome, but Ferris isn't a wrong answer.

From the Associated Press:

Tyrell Lewis scored 16 points, and Mount Rainier used a tremendous shooting performance to hold off a late Mount Spokane rally for a 53-48 win in the first round of the Class 3A boys state tournament on Wednesday.

Lewis made 7 of 10 shots as the Rams (21-6) hit 55.6 percent for the game and 60 percent in the second half. Mount Rainier needed the strong shooting to hold off the Wildcats, who overcame their own poor shooting in the first half before falling short in the closing moments. Mount Spokane shot just 28 percent in the first half and 33 percent for the game.

Ryan Selland led the Wildcats (14-10) with 21 points and Jorndan Poynor added 17.

3A GIRLS TOURNAMENT

Favorite
Auburn Riverside (21-3)

If you don’t know by now that the Ravens are the most dangerous 3A team in the state, then we’re not sure who can help you. Washington State-bound Katie Grad leads a bevy of talented players with 20.9 points per game, while junior Nichole Jackson and sophomore Mercedes Wetmore share point guard duties. The defending 3A champions have already beaten Kennedy, possibly their most dangerous opponent, twice in the past three weeks.

2A girls basketball tournament
Favorites
Pullman (21-1)

The Greyhounds’ only loss was a winter break hiccup against Zillah. Pullman has won 16 straight games since, including beating Clarkston and West Valley (Spokane), the district’s other two state teams, three times each. Led by senior posts Kirsi Voshell and Anna Albrecht, the balanced Greyhounds also have a freshman, 6-foot-3 Shelby Cheslek, among their top three scorers.

River Ridge (20-3)
Besides a slip against Aberdeen in double overtime, the defending champion Hawks have losses to fellow Evergreen Conference powers Black Hills and Tumwater. Not too shabby for a team with its third coach in four years. Seniors Sophie Russell, Keisha McDonald and Courtney Blume bring the experience, while freshmen Kelsey Russell, Jasmine McDonald and Jennifer Cole bring the energy.

Ellensburg (20-4)
The Bulldogs were the team to beat early in the Central Washington Athletic Conference, so a few opponents did just that. But Gonzaga-bound guard/post Kayla Standish and her teammates held on for the district title and want to build on 2007’s fifth-place finish after a first-round loss to runner-up Tumwater.

Class 2A boys capsules

FAVORITES
Burlington-Edison (21-2)

The Tigers were on the verge of reaching the semifinals last season before a fourth-quarter collapse. Burlington-Edison is back with a roster loaded with talent. Forward Jake Anderson might be the best player in the tournament. The Seattle Pacific University signee has scored in double figures in all but two games this season and is averaging 18.4 points per game. Forward Kolby Arendse (15.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg) gives Burlington-Edison a dangerous twosome. The Tigers face the potential of playing River Ridge, the team that knocked them into the losers bracket last year, in the semifinals.

Mark Morris (21-3)

Eric Hutchison and Jeray Key are the only starters back from a team that reached the state finals last season. The Monarchs are making their ninth consecutive state tournament appearance. Mark Morris enters the tourney on a 17-game winning streak. The Monarchs' three losses are to Kelso and a pair of schools from Oregon - Grant and Westview. Mark Morris could exact some revenge from last season with a possible meeting with defending champion Lynden in the semifinals.

FAVORITES
Rainier Beach (25-1)

The Vikings appear to be a step ahead of the rest of the field. Winners of 22 consecutive games entering the state tournament – their only loss is a 95-90 overtime defeat to Class 4A Franklin – Rainier Beach has one of the state’s best players in guard Reggie Moore. The future Fresno State player is averaging a double-double of 13 points and 10 assists per game. Three other Vikings are scoring in double figures, led by guard Michael Ladd’s 16 points per game and Aaron Dotson’s 15. Making their 11th consecutive state appearance, the Vikings have more depth and athleticism.

Lakes (22-1)

If any team can match Rainier Beach’s athleticism, it’s the Lancers. Lakes gets balanced scoring from its big three of center Kavario Middleton (15 ppg), wing Jermaine Kearse (16 ppg) and guard Anthony Enriquez (17 ppg). Three other players (Lawrence Anthony, Andre Winston and Brandon Jiminez) score at least eight points per game. Last year, Lakes was thumped by Rainier Beach in the first round. But these Lancers have much more depth and scoring options, plus another season in second-year coach JoJo Rodriguez’s system. Lakes enters on an 18-game winning streak.

Charles Wright beat River View, 53-48, tonight in the championship of the Class 1A boys tournament in Yakima. The game story from the Associated Press:

YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) _ Gerald Hill scored all 17 of his points in the second half to lead Charles Wright to a 53-48 victory over fourth-ranked River View for the Class 1A boys state championship Saturday.

Hill, the tournament's most valuable player, scored 17 of Charles Wright's 24 second-half points. He took over a 38-all game entering the fourth quarter, scoring his team's first 11 points and giving them a lead they would never relinquish.

"I just knew I had to do it," Hill said. "My teammates had worked too hard for us not to win this thing."

It was the first state title for Charles Wright (22-6), and the best finish for the Panthers (23-4).

Patrick Philley also scored 17 points, including four 3-pointers, for the Tarriers, and Jorden Hand added 11. Hill and Hand each pulled down six rebounds for CW.

Kyle Gier scored 19 points for RV, including three 3-pointers. He also grabbed eight rebounds.

River View trailed twice by 10 points, the last time 34-24 with 6:48 left in the third quarter. But the Panthers rallied back, sparked by 3-pointers from Levi Davis, Gier and Zach Reynolds, to knot the score heading into the final period.

CW shot 46 percent (16 of 35) for the game, while the Panthers made 40 percent (19 of 48).

Bellarmine can't hang with the Storm when 6-foot senior Ashlee Smith is on the floor. But the second she leaves the floor, the Lions go right back inside and can score. Luckily, it's the final game of the tournament for both teams, so Smith can have a few days to recover after playing the majority of today's game.

Smith has 18 points early in the fourth.

On the boys' side, Franklin 54, Richland 36 at the end of the three. Chris Holmes has 23 for Franklin.
