Ferris' DeAngelo Casto and Prairie's Ashely Corral have been voted the state boys and girls basketball players of the year by the Associated Press.

Sports writers from around the state vote for these postseason honors.

The AP reported that six boys received votes for state player of the year honors, with Casto edging teammate Shawn Stockton. Corral was a near-unanimous selection.

Bellarmine Prep's Abdul Gaddy and Avery Bradley were first-team selections. This is the second year in a row Bradley has been voted to the team. Kavario Middleton made the 3A first team for the second straight season. Charles Wright's Gerald Hill was a boys 1A first-team choice.

Auburn Riverside's Katie Grad was named the 3A girls player of the year and Lakes' Sara Halasz was a first-team selection. River Ridge's Sophie Russell was a first-team pick in 2A.

Reporter Mindi Rice passes along this note about Prairie point guard Ashley Corral...

Prairie's Ashley Corral, who played in the McDonald's All-American game todayin Milwaukee, won Monday's Three-Point Shootout. The Southern Cal-bound senior hit 16 3-pointers in the first round, five more than the next competitor, and 15 in the second round to win the girls' 3-point event.

The Prairie guard was the only Washington player -- boy or girl -- selected for this year's McDonald's All-American teams.

Corral was The News Tribune's State Player of the Year.

The high school basketball season may be over, but there's still basketball being played.

The best players from the Seamount, SPSL 3A, Narrows League and SPSL North and South will go head-to-head at the Cloud Nine All-Star Event on Friday at Auburn High School. SPSL North vs. SPSL South, 8 p.m.

The following weekend is the Washington-Oregon senior all-star games on April 6 at the Chiles Center in Portland, Ore. The girls play at 4 p.m. and the boys are at 6 p.m.

Amojo commits to Washington State

Chalk up another Pacific-10 Conference player for the Auburn Riverside girls basketball program.
Ireti Amojo, the German exchange student who played for the Ravens’ 2007 3A championship team, took an unofficial visit to Pullman over the weekend and decided to leave a Cougar, giving Washington State coach June Daugherty a verbal commitment.
“It’s just the perfect fit for Ireti,” Auburn Riverside coach Adam Barrett said. “The only people over here Ireti knows are with Riverside and the Grad family, and there are a lot of Riverside kids at WSU.”
Amojo, who lived with 2008 Cougar signee Katie Grad during her exchange year, is the first player to commit for Daugherty’s 2009 recruiting class. She has one year of school remaining in Germany.
Julie Futch, a 2006 graduate, is a sophomore on the Oregon State squad, while 2007 3A state tournament MVP Stephanie Wilber is a freshman with Arizona State’s program.

Auburn Riverside pulled out a 48-40 victory against Kennedy. It wasn't pretty, but the Ravens won their second straight title. There's a story in Sunday's paper, but the game ran a little late, so look for another story in Monday's TNT.

As for Oregon, this comes from the AP (I listened to part of the game on the radio before the Riverside game started)....Puyallup native Michael Meek's Southridge girls won their fourth straight Oregon title.

Southridge 49, Oregon City 43

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Senior center Michelle Jenkins scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Southridge to its fourth consecutive state championship with a hard-fought 49-43 victory over Oregon City on Saturday.
Southridge became the only school besides Oregon City to win four consecutive state titles at Oregon’s highest level.
After a ragged offensive performance in Friday’s semifinal victory over top-ranked Central Catholic, the Skyhawks came out with a determined effort in the first quarter of Saturday’s championship game.
The Hawks hit 7 of 13 shots in that period and had a commanding 18-6 lead heading into the second stanza. But Southridge scored just four points over the next eight minutes while committing eight turnovers.
That helped Oregon City whittle Southridge’s lead to 22-16 heading into the locker room at intermission.
Southridge regained its composure through the first five minutes of the third quarter while pushing its lead to a game-high 15-point margin at 36-21. Five different Southridge players tallied during that stretch but Jenkins, with four of those points, was the only one to score more than a basket.
Then, just as the game was on the verge of getting away from Oregon City, the Pioneers struck back with a 10-2 run that cut Southridge’s lead to 38-31 at the close of the third period. Lindsey Shearer spurred the comeback with a steal and two baskets.
The Skyhawks didn’t relinquish the momentum for long, though. Just as they did in their semifinal victory over Central Catholic, the Hawks used a stingy defense to keep Oregon City’s offense off-balance. By the midway point of the final period, Southridge’s lead had grown to 44-33.
Oregon City was able to make an impressive run after that, and got help from Southridge, which missed a string of free throws down the stretch.
That made it possible for Oregon City to score six unanswered points, which cut the deficit to 44-39 with 59 seconds left. A short time later, it was 47-43 after Kiara Tate hit one of two free throws for Southridge and Oregon City’s Karlie Gach answered with a length-of-the-court driving basket to make it 47-43.
But the comeback eventually ran out of time and Southridge managed to hang on for the win.
Jenkins and senior point guard Alex Earl, who finished with nine points and seven rebounds, were members of all four of Southridge’s championship teams.
Oregon City, which was led by Shearer’s 13 points and 10 by Melair Holterhoff, has the state’s best championship run. The Pioneers had a string of five straight titles form 1994 through 1999. They also won four straight from 2001 to 2004.

This was submitted for tomorrow's notebook but might end up getting cut for space, so I thought I'd throw it on the blog as well.

Starbird catches Lakes’ win

Former Lakes star Kate Starbird was in attendance Saturday at Hec Ed to take in Lakes’ win against Kamiakin for the fourth-place trophy.

Starbird, a 1993 graduate who went on to star at Stanford for four years, recently moved to Boulder, Colo., to begin a PhD program studying technology, society and education at the University of Colorado. When she heard the Lancers were playing in Seattle at the state tournament the same weekend she would be back in town, she hoped they’d make it to Saturday so she could watch them play.

After the game, Starbird joined the team on the court for a photo with their trophy.

“It was a pleasure having Kate here,” Lakes coach Dave McEachern said. “Just having her around, being part of the program and supporting the team from afar. She supports us from afar and we know that and appreciate that.”

The Lancers’ fourth-place finish Saturday was the first girls state basketball trophy since Starbird led Lakes to fifth-place finishes in 1991 and 1993.

It's 62-38 Lakes after three and, to be honest, I've stopped tracking the points (that's what post-game stat sheets are for!). Lakes went on a 21-1 run over a little more than four minutes to pretty much run the game out of reach.

Lakes will take the fourth-place trophy with the win, ending its season at 24-2, losing to only Kennedy and Auburn Riverside, the two teams playing for the title tonight.

Lakes grad Kate Starbird made a guest appearance at the game, watching her alma mater take home the fourth place trophy.
