We accidentally ran the wrong version of the Shelton Invite story in Sunday's paper - the copy in the TNT was meant for the Olympia newspaper. So, for your viewing pleasure, here is the (unedited) version of the Tacoma-centric Shelton Invite story, with info on Enumclaw star Stephanie Jones, Wilson runners Anthony France and Kevin Rosaaen, and Rogers' boys team victory, as well as problems for Rogers' star hurdler Eric Morrison.

Two years of having the Class 3A state basketball tournaments in Seattle was enough. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association is moving the tournament back to the Tacoma Dome next season, executive director Mike Colbrese said. Colbrese said small crowds and the cost of renting two sites -- KeyArena and Hec Ed -- in Seattle were the reasons for the change. Having the 3A tournament at the Tacoma Dome will save the WIAA "potentially $40,000," Colbrese said. Returning the 3A tourney to Tacoma meant the 2A tourney will go back to the Yakima SunDome. The other tournaments will not change sites. The WIAA shuffled the state track meets, too. Next year, Mount Tahoma will host 2A, 3A and 4A athletes over three days, beginning on Thursday. The 1A, 2B and 1B schools will compete at Cheney. At the Rep Assembly today in Renton, voters approved an amendment to give districts control over eligibility hearings for transfer students. Currently, athletes are deemed eligible by their own school districts. This will make everyone "play by the same rules," Colbrese said. The results of other notable proposals: Girls lacrosse becoming a varsity sport was voted down 46-7. Moving to a four-year enrollment cycle failed 25-10. Schools will not be punished for clerical errors that result in ineligible athletes competing. Athletes cannot escape a suspenion at one school by transferring to another. They will have to serve the remainder of the suspension at their new school. Thursday, April 24th, 2008

According to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas national rankings, Bellarmine Prep has one of the best boys soccer teams in the country. The Lions are No. 3 in the April 16 national poll. Spring Valley High of Columbia, S.C., is No. 1 and Chatahoochee High of Alpharetta, Ga., is No. 2. Three other Washington schools also appear in the top-20. Snohomish is No. 10, Cascade is No. 16 and Marysville-Pilchuck is No. 17. Bellarmine Prep also leads the regional poll. The Lions recently returned from a trip to Ireland where they went 3-1 in matches. Bellarmine Prep claimed the Narrows League title with a 2-1 win at South Kitsap on Thursday night. First-year Auburn baseball coach Brian Embery resigned his position today. Embery would not comment on the reasons for his resignation and Auburn School District officials could not be reached. Embery had not been with the team in the three games previous to his resignation. Junior varisty coach Gordon Elliott has taken over head coaching duties. Monday, April 21st, 2008

What's it like to be wanted by dozens of Division I colleges? You can find out in this Sports Illustrated article. It's a compelling read that examines the scholarship offer letters sent to Tate Forcier, a high school quarterback from San Diego. The junior has posted the letters from 21 universities on his Web site. It's interesting to see the approaches each school and coach take, trying to woo and court Forcier. Washington and Washington State fans will be interested in the letters sent by Huskies coach Tyrone Willingham and Cougars coach Paul Wulff. Willingham wrote, "With your greatness, we know that the Husky football program will return to being the best in the country. The impact you have will be immediate and tremendous." Wulff's letter was a bit more understated. He wrote, "I want you to know how important you are to the future of this program. We would like you to become an impact player for the Cougars right now!" I wonder, though, if any of these coaches will be put off that Forcier has made public the letters they sent? Or is this a shrewd move, playing the coaches off each other in order to get certain promises, like early playing time, for a committment?

A Japanese high school pitcher threw 250 pitches and allowed 66 runs in two innings before the game was called. No, those figures are not misprints. You can read the story about the Kawamoto Technical High School baseball team here. The most interesting part of the story is what the unnamed Kawamoto coach said after the game: "At that pace the pitcher would have thrown around 500 pitches in four innings," he said. "There was a danger he could get injured." But throwing 250 pitches is OK. Gotcha.

I wrote a story for today's paper on Gig Harbor pitcher Brandon Rohde coming back from Tommy John surgery. Rohde was one of the state's top pitchers as a sophomore when he suffered the ligament tear in his left elbow. He missed his junior season, but that didn't stop the University of Washington from offering him a scholarship and Rohde signed a letter of intent in November. He's been dominant this spring, posting a 3-1 record. While Rohde has a made a complete recovery like most who undergo ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction -- that's the medical term for Tommy John surgery -- it's becoming common practice for teenagers to require elbow reconstruction. And some parents have gone so far as to ask if their healthy child should get it. The New York Times ran this interesting piece last year. The writer spoke to a handful of surgeons around the country that have expertise in performing Tommy John surgery. They all said that they are performing dozens more surgeries on children now than a decade ago. That's partly a product of the surgery having such a huge success rate. But when parents start thinking it would be a good idea to snap their kid's elbow and replace it with a new tendon, hoping to make them throw harder and faster, well, the priorities need to be re-evaluated. Puyallup pitcher Adam Cimber almost threw a second no-hitter in as many starts. The junior right-hander took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against Graham-Kapowsin on Wednesday before losing his bid. The Vikings still won, beating the Eagles 3-0. Cimber no-hit Spanaway Lake on Friday and has been nearly untouchable in his last three starts, allowing only three hits. The submarine sidearm pitcher gave up two in a 10-0 win over Rogers on April 8. Cimber's no-hitter last week earned him TNT Athlete of the Week honors. You can find it in today's newspaper and here's the Q & A. Athletes of the Week Adam Cimber Take us through the no-hitter When did you realize you had a no-hitter going? Puyallup has been successful so far, what’s working for the team? Did you do anything for spring break? Who is your favorite pitcher? Did coaches ever try to teach you the “proper” way to pitch? Chene Cooper, Lakes' 5-foot-1 senior point guard, signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play at Eastern Washington University. "The team is cool and the coaches were really cool," Cooper said. "A lot of coaches don't think I can play at that level and (head coach Wendy Schuller) gave me a chance and that's all I wanted and that's all I needed. Now I've got to try to make a home there." Cooper, who was an all-state honorable mention selection, helped the Lancers’ place fourth at the Class 3A state tournament in March. In her four years as a starter, Cooper scored 1,206 points and tallied 563 assists. She averaged more than 15 points per game as a senior.

Reporter Mike Vlahovich of the Spokane Spokesman-Review wrote this week that radical changes could be coming to the way the state basketball tournaments are played. To view the story, click here and scroll down to the "Thursday Prep Page stuff" blog entry to bypass the site's log-in and password restrictions. One proposal calls for a return to the regional format, which is similar to how baseball is done. Each of the four regions would send one team to the Final Four. Another, more complex proposal, would combine the 4A-3A, 2A-1A and 2B-1B tournaments at three different sites. Each would be a 16-team single-elimination tournament with first-round games to be played on a Tuesday at a regional site, Vlahovich wrote. The eight winners would then travel to the state tournament for the quarterfinals on Thursday. I like this idea. By combining tournaments, the WIAA would save on paying rent at additional venues and give fans much more reason to come out for the semifinals and finals if they were getting more for their cost of admission. I'm all for single-elimination tournaments, especially combining them to make it much more interesting and entertaining for fans. With falling attendance at the 3A tournaments in Seattle this year and small crowds at the Tacoma Dome for the 2A tournament (probably because only six of the 32 teams are withing 50 miles of the T-Dome) something must change in the future.

I had a story in today's paper about a few of the amendments that will be proposed at the WIAA Rep Assembly later this month. Here's a complete list of the amendments. There are a few that, if passed, will have some impact on high school sports in Washington. These are the big ones: Amendment No. 1 Amendment No. 5 The majority of schools already have more stringent requirements than this. Lakes High School, for instance, requires students pass all their classes to remain eligible. But some, like the Puyallup School District, still use the WIAA's guidelines. We explored this topic a few months ago with this story. Amendment No. 8 I like this rule because it means every transfer in a particular district will be dealt with by the same committee. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer had an interesting story on the Seattle School District's toothless transfer policy that, in essence, made top athletes free agents. Amendment No. 18 Those are the big amendments. No huge, sweeping changes like reclassification. But if any of these pass, they will certainly affect the prep sports scene. What do you think?

We've got new No. 1 teams in each of the state baseball polls this week. Losses sent last week's top teams -- Redmond, Auburn, Selah and Naches Valley -- tumbling in the rankings. The new No. 1's are Snohomish, Skyline, Ellensburg and Kiona-Benton. This early in the season, I expect the rankings will be awfully fluid for at least the next couple weeks. 4A RANKINGS 3A RANKINGS 2A RANKINGS 1A RANKINGS

Reporter Mindi Rice mentioned in her story today on the Northwest Shootout that Ferris center DeAngelo Casto has said he has committed to play basketball at Washington State University. Casto said he picked the Cougars over the University of Washington. The 6-foot-8 senior was a force this season, helping Ferris to a second straight undefeated season and Class 4A championship. Casto blocked a 4A title game-record eight shots against Federal Way. At the NW Shootout in Portland, Casto was named the game's co-MVP with Rainier Beach's Reggie Moore after totaling 19 points, 8 rebounds and 8 blocks, leading Washington to a 108-105 victory.
