What's it like to be wanted by dozens of Division I colleges? You can find out in this Sports Illustrated article. It's a compelling read that examines the scholarship offer letters sent to Tate Forcier, a high school quarterback from San Diego. The junior has posted the letters from 21 universities on his Web site. It's interesting to see the approaches each school and coach take, trying to woo and court Forcier. Washington and Washington State fans will be interested in the letters sent by Huskies coach Tyrone Willingham and Cougars coach Paul Wulff. Willingham wrote, "With your greatness, we know that the Husky football program will return to being the best in the country. The impact you have will be immediate and tremendous." Wulff's letter was a bit more understated. He wrote, "I want you to know how important you are to the future of this program. We would like you to become an impact player for the Cougars right now!" I wonder, though, if any of these coaches will be put off that Forcier has made public the letters they sent? Or is this a shrewd move, playing the coaches off each other in order to get certain promises, like early playing time, for a committment? |
