Two years of having the Class 3A state basketball tournaments in Seattle was enough. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association is moving the tournament back to the Tacoma Dome next season, executive director Mike Colbrese said.

Colbrese said small crowds and the cost of renting two sites -- KeyArena and Hec Ed -- in Seattle were the reasons for the change. Having the 3A tournament at the Tacoma Dome will save the WIAA "potentially $40,000," Colbrese said.

Returning the 3A tourney to Tacoma meant the 2A tourney will go back to the Yakima SunDome. The other tournaments will not change sites.

The WIAA shuffled the state track meets, too. Next year, Mount Tahoma will host 2A, 3A and 4A athletes over three days, beginning on Thursday. The 1A, 2B and 1B schools will compete at Cheney.

At the Rep Assembly today in Renton, voters approved an amendment to give districts control over eligibility hearings for transfer students. Currently, athletes are deemed eligible by their own school districts. This will make everyone "play by the same rules," Colbrese said.

Girls lacrosse becoming a varsity sport was voted down 46-7.

Moving to a four-year enrollment cycle failed 25-10.

Schools will not be punished for clerical errors that result in ineligible athletes competing.

Athletes cannot escape a suspenion at one school by transferring to another. They will have to serve the remainder of the suspension at their new school.
