Video has surfaced that shows Bellarmine Prep distance runner Nicole Cochrane should not have been disqualified.
The video of the Class 4A girls 3,200-meter race at last week's Star Track track and field meet in Pasco shows that it was Cochrane's teammate who ran inside the lane line. But an official ruled it was Cochrane and the Harvard-bound runner was disqualified 10 minutes after winning the race.
Here is the link to Flotrack.com's video.
It is unlikely that the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association will officially award Cochrane first place. The use of video is prohibited when making rulings and judgment calls are non-reviewable.
If Abdul Gaddy and Avery Bradley get their way, the Bellarmine Prep pair will be basketball teammates after they graduate from high school.
Gaddy sent college basketball coaches scurrying to revive recruiting pitches when on Thursday The News Tribune’s All-Area Player of the Year withdrew his oral commitment to attend the University of Arizona. Gaddy, who is rated as the No. 2 point guard in the nation by Scout.com, and Bradley, a fellow junior and ranked as the No. 9 shooting guard, say they want to be a package deal.
“We’re perfect together,” said Bradley, a 6-foot-2 senior-to-be. “No one can stop us.”
The 6-foot-3 Gaddy said changes in Arizona’s coaching staff led him to back off his commitment. But he still could become a Wildcat.
“Arizona is still the front-runner,” he said Friday evening, wearing an Arizona sweatshirt as he sat in the stands at Seattle’s Franklin High at the Quaker Summer Slam basketball tournament. “I’m giving them, along with some other schools, a chance to re-recruit me.”
Gaddy and Bradley have their choice of schools. Every Pac-10 school, along with major programs Kansas, Texas, Memphis and others, have offered scholarships. Gaddy said he has not yet scheduled any official visits. Bradley said he has one so far and will visit the University of Texas in August. Bradley said he and Gaddy have not yet whittled their list of suitors to a few.
“We’re open to a lot of schools,” he said. “We’re looking for the right fit for both of us.”
Gaddy orally committed to Arizona on August 23, but much has changed in the Wildcats’ program since then. Longtime coach Lute Olson took a leave of absence for the 2007-08 season for undisclosed personal reasons, leaving assistant Kevin O’Neill the interim coach. When Olson resumed his position April, he said O’Neill would not be on his staff this season.
Two other assistants, Josh Pastner and Miles Simon, have also left. Pastner joined the staff at the University of Memphis earlier this month and the contract of Simon, who helped the Wildcats win the 1997 NCAA championship, was not renewed.
Gaddy and Bradley helped Bellarmine Prep to its best season in nearly three decades last winter. The Narrows League champions reached the Class 4A state semifinals and placed third in the state tournament. Bellarmine Prep finished with a record of 25-4.
Bradley, an all-state selection, led Class 4A in scoring, averaging 25.7 points per game, and his leaping ability helped him become a presence on the boards and block shots. Gaddy averaed 23 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals per game.
Gaddy was named Washington’s Gatorade state player of the year, becoming the first non-senior to earn the accolade in the 12 years. If he wins the award next year, he will be the first player in state history to get it twice.

Gonzaga University made a big splash in hiring its first full-time coach in the history of its cross country program. Running guru Pat Tyson was today named the Bulldogs' coach.
Tyson's has a history of producing champions. He coached Spokane's Mead High School to 12 team state cross country titles and nine individual championships. He also guided Shorecrest to two team titles.
In 2005, he was a volunteer coach at the University of Oregon, then he spent the 2006-07 school year at the University of Kentucky before becoming South Eugene (Ore.) High's coach in January.

Bellarmine Prep's boys soccer team beat Puyallup 2-1, outshooting the Vikings 4-1 in a shootout, to claim the Class 4A state championship.
Lions defender Elliot Morton tied the score on a header in the final minutes of regulation.
Justing Veltung scored Puyallup's goal.
This is the Lions' second title. They won their previous crown in 2004.
Cascade Christian sophomore Spencer Ramos added a 1A boys 300-meter hurdles title to the 110-meter hurdles crown he won earlier today.
Ramos took the lead for good at the second-to-last hurdle when he passed King's Austin Dean.
Ramos turned out for the track team after being persuaded by coach Josh Hoff and he began doing the hurdles about a few weeks into the season. Less than two months later, he's a double-winner at the state meet.
"I can't believe it," Ramos said.
Two more records have fallen. Prosser's Cade Wandling broke the 2A boys meet mark in the 400, running a 48.38 seconds. The previous best of 48.50 was set in 2002 by Mount Baker's Mike Rawlins.
In the 2A boys pole vault, Ephrata's Wes Chamberlain set a record by going 15 feet, 5 inches. Cashmere's Evan Whitehall had the previous mark of 15-4.
Consolation bracket games, 1 p.m. games:

Wilson/Monroe winner vs. Rogers (Puyallup)
3A
Southridge vs. Everett
Kamiakin vs. Bonney Lake
We're only a couple hours into the Class 1A and 2A state track and field meet finals, a handful of records have fallen.
Here's what we've got:
Boys
Class 1A
Cedar Park Christian's Zack Keene smashed the 100-meter dash mark, clocking a time of 10.77 seconds. Bellevue Christian's Matt Isbell had the previous record of 10.88.
Girls
Class 1AThe Chewelah 800-meter relay team ran a 1:45.28, breaking a 25-year-old mark of 1:45.30 set by Blaine.
Class 2A
The South Whidbey and Burlington-Edison 800-meter relay teams each broke the mark of 1:44.46 set by King's in 2005. South Whidbey won the race, though, with a time of 1:44.97, while the Tigers finished in 1:45.02.
Locally, Cascade Christian's Spencer Ramos won the 1A boys 110 hurdles and Steilacoom's Alex Davidson was first in the 2A girls 100-meter dash. Davidson could also win the 200 later today.
Both 4A and 3A fastpitch could have repeat champions as Shadle Park advanced to the 4A title game and Kennedy reached the 3A finals.
Shadle Park, which beat Redmond 6-0 today in the semifinals, will play Eastlake. The Wolves topped Rogers of Puyallup 4-0 in their semifinal.
Kennedy edged Everett 5-2 and will meet undefeated Timberline, which beat Bonney Lake 6-2.
Class 4A
Title game: Shadle Park vs. Eastlake, 2:30 p.m.
Class 3A
Kennedy vs. Timberline, 3:30 p.m.
Reporter Todd Milles filed this story minutes ago from Pasco. Bellarmine Prep distance runner Nicole Cochrane was disqualified ten minutes after the 3,200 meters ended -- a race she won and ran a personal-best 10 minutes, 32 seconds -- for taking three steps inside the line on the first lap.
Here's the lead to the article:
Ready for instant replay to hit Washington's high school track and field circuit?
After what transpired late in the evening session of Star Track XXVI on Friday night, the line of supporters might be long.
What was going swimmingly for the Bellarmine Prep Lions, the steely-built program that was ready to challenge the Class 4A state team points record, suddenly turned badly, swallowed up one of the most controversial and heatedly-contested disqualifications in state-meet history.
Lions senior Nicole Cochran had just turned in her personal-best time of 10 minutes, 36 seconds in what she thought was a successful defense of her 4A girls 3,200-meter crown at Edgar Brown Stadium.
Ten minutes later, Bellarmine Prep coach Matt Ellis got word that meet officials had ruled Cochran, in the next-to-last lap of the race, had made three consecutive steps on the line inside lap one, which is an infraction and immediate disqualification.
Enraged, Ellis argued on that lap – in the last turn – Cochran had made her move to the outside of the pack to take the lead, which she did, and never relinquished.
Ellis and Lions athletic director Ed Ploof filed an appeal, which was reviewed and denied.
Meet officials then announced Shadle Park's Andrea Nelson, who finished in 10:40.04, was the winner.
"That's not fair. She won," Nelson said. "She totally deserves it. She crushed everybody."
As the girls were introduced on the awards stand, Cochran stood in the background, politely clapping and obviously disappointed. Once it was over, Nelson came over and gave Cochran the first-place medal.
"It's nothing (a meet official) does light-heartedly," said Le Burns, the meet's co-director. "They were adamant the number on the hip. They were adamant about the person and who they were, and where they ran … and watched several laps of it."
The shake-up has certainly done one thing: The 4A girls team race is up for grabs now.
Playoff-mainstay Bellarmine Prep will take on tournament-newbie Puyallup in the Class 4A boys soccer title game at 7 p.m. Saturday at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood.
Here's a rundown on the semifinals:
CLASS 4A
Bellarmine Prep 3, Eastlake 2: The Lions withstood a challenge from Eastlake, beating the Wolves 3-2 in a shootout. Bellarmine Prep outshot Eastlake 3-1 in the shootout.
Sophomore Scott Hanson converted the final kick, going to the left and out of reach for Eastlake goalkeeper Robbie Marsh.
Hanson gave the Lions a 2-1 lead when he scored in the 57th minute. Eastlake tied the score 10 minutes later on a header.
Bellarmine Prep improved to 21-1.
Puyallup 1, Todd Beamer 0: The Vikings advanced to their first state title game after beating the Titans for the first time in three matches this season.
Justin Veltung, The News Tribune's All-Area Player of the Year, scored the game's only goal. It came in the 24th minute when he scorched the ball into the goal from 11 yards out.
Kyle Bilharz recorded the shutout for the Vikings.
CLASS 3A
Camas and Kennedy will meet in the 3A title game at 5 p.m. at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood.
In the semifinals, Kennedy beat Mercer Island 3-2, outshooting the Islanders 3-1 in a shootout, and the Papermakers shut out Lakeside 1-0.
CLASS 1A
Ready for a rematch?
King’s and Highland each won their Class 1A boys soccer state semifinal matches on Friday at Sunset Chev Stadium, advancing to the finals for the second straight season.
Highland claimed the championship last season, beating the Knights 1-0. King’s will get a chance to avenge that defeat at 5 tonight.
In the semifinals, Highland beat Connell, 1-0, and King’s edged White Salmon, 2-1.
Jesus Silva scored in the 19th minute for the Scotties (17-5). Connell (19-2) outshot Highland, 12-6, but goalkeeper Alavaro Salcedo made eight saves to preserve the shutout.
King’s (17-6) also took an early lead when Trevor Bartels scored in the 26 th minute. White Salmon (18-2) countered with a goal from Cheno Barajas in the 51st minute, tying the score, but Brett Simons scored the game-winner in the 69th minute.
Connell will play White Salmon at 1 p.m. for third place.
CLASS 2A
Cheney 2, Quincy 1: Harlan Gough’s goal in a shootout catapulted the Blackhawks into their first title game in school history.
Cheney (20-1) will play Sehome at 7 tonight at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner. The consolation game is at 3 p.m. Cheney outscored Quincy 3-2 in the shootout, getting goals from Mitchell Weller and Justin Hale.
The Blackhawks took a 1-0 lead four minutes into the second half when Alex Bray scored on an assist from Mitchell Bray. Quincy answered with a goal from Cristian Medina in the 64th minute.
Sehome 3, Cedarcrest 0: The Mariners from Bellingham handed the Red Wolves their first loss of the season, advancing to the finals for the first time since they won the 3A banner in 2002.
Sehome (16-6) took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when Mike Klein scored and held its 1-0 lead for most of the game until Nino Tursich added a goal in the 68th minute. Minutes later, Max Dewees capped the scoring.
Cedarcrest (20-1-1) will play Quincy at 3 p.m. for third place.

Olympia's quest for a state championship is over. Snohomish scored three unearned runs in the first inninng and that was all the Panthers' needed, beating the Bears 3-2 in the Class 4A semifinals at Safeco Field in Seattle.
Olympia will play Richland at 1 p.m. in the consolation game, while Snohomish will meet Kentlake at 7 p.m. in the title game.
TNT freelancer Tyler Hemstreet provides us with this update from Safeco Field:
Lewis Larson's RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Kentlake a 5-4 win over Richland in the Class 4A semifinals, launching the Falcons into the Class 4A state title game for the first time.
Kentlake will play the winner of the Olympia-Snohomish game at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Reporter Todd Milles has filed this report from Star Track in Pasco:
The South Sound invasion has already started at Star Track.
Under overcast skies, with virtually no wind at Edgar Brown Stadium, the first sessions wrapped up with no big upsets, and many local athletes winning their first state track and field titles.
Fighting a bout with the flu, Curtis High's Andrea Geubelle was still able to take the Class 4A girls long jump title with a jump of 19 feet, 13/4 inches – a mark she produced early in preliminaries.
"I had to get one out there," Geubelle said. "I'm kind of weak."
Geubelle's victory unseated defending champion Bree LeRoy's quest for a repeat feat. LeRoy was second at 18-63/4.
It the Vikings' first long jump championship since 2003 when Sarah Burns, now at Washington State, captured the title.
Geubelle is a heavy favorite in the 4A triple jump Saturday, and a victory would give her the first sweep of the long and triple jumps since Skyline's Christina Tupper in 2005.
The Bellarmine Prep girls, the 4A team favorite with a legitimate chance to set a meet record for points, got a huge boost from Brianna Okoro in the long jump. She went 18-51/2 to place third.
Not bad for a girl who was returning from tendinitis, and just started jumping a month ago.
"I'm really happy I pulled through," Okoro said.
The Lions pulled the No. 1 time in the girls 400 relay at 47.70. They'll gun for the all-time best mark of 47.05, set by Garfield in 1983.
Other winners:
· Bethel's Oliver Henry said he'll give the discus a second thought at Central Washington when he attends that university next fall as a quarterback recruit.
Henry's 169-3 was good enough to clip Beamer's Marty Fuller (165-1) for the 4A boys title.
· Coaches gave Jefferson's Sofia Malamura sound advice during 4A girls shot put warmups Friday.
"Throw a big one out there," they told her.
And she did, ripping off a throw of 41-21/4 on her first attempt of preliminaries, and cruised to her first state title over Battle Ground's Gaby Dixson (39-33/4).
· The West Central District kept the 4A boys long jump in the family for a fourth consecutive season. This time, it was Kentlake's Zach Smith, who won in 23-3.
· Enumclaw crowned a pair of throw champions – one for the first time, and the other in defense of a title.
Senior Mileka Grager won the 3A girls javelin at 138-5, edging Eastmont's Brooke Randall (133-1).
As for defending 3A discus champion Conner Larned, meet officials prepared for his warmups by extending a fence to keep spectators at bay. Larned did not bust a long throw, but his 177-6 easily helped him repeat as champion.
Timberline is 24-0, while Bonney Lake won and Capital lost. In 4A, Central Kitsap is out.

Our sister paper in Pasco, the Tri-City Herald, has an abundance of Star Track coverage today.
Jack Millikin wrote a feature on Curtis triple jumper Andrea Geubelle. She was also featured in our Star Track preview here.
Sports editor Jeff Morrow has a feature on meet director John Crawford, who's putting on his final show this weekend. That's part of the reason Star Track is coming to Tacoma next year.
Here's sports reporter Rene Ferran's picks to win in every event.
I spoke with Selah sprinter Brett Blanshan a few moments ago. The junior's spirits are much higher thanks to setting a meet record in the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 2 3/4 inches.
Blanshan said he was not appealing his disqualification after false starting in the 100-meter dash.
"No excuses," he said. "I false started."

Selah junior sprinter Brett Blanshan, who owns the fastest 100-meter time in the state this season at 10.36 seconds, was disqualified after false-starting in his heat.
In Washington, athletes are disqualified after they false start. No word yet on if the disqualification has been appealed.
It didn't seem like the starter had the runners in the blocks too long, but some people I've talked to said if they were going to appeal the disqualification, that's the reasoning they would give.
In other news, Pullman's Anna Albrecht broke the Class 2A girls meet record in the shot put she set last year with a toss of 45 feet, 1 1/2 inches. The heave was a personal-best for Albrecht, who will throw at Washington State University next season, by nearly a foot and a half.
Six of the eight first-round games are over for 4A fastpitch and Wilson was the only local winner with a 7-4 win against Woodinville.
The 3A tournament is just getting started. We'll post those results when they are final.

I'm at Mount Tahoma High, covering the Class 2A and 1A state track meets, where we've got a steady drizzle coming down. I've checked Weather.com and it doesn't look like we're supposed to get a respite from the rain.
The meet has just started with two heats of the 1A girls 800-meter relay already completed.
Puyallup's Justin Veltung is The News Tribune's All-Area Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
Veltung, who was also named the SPSL South Player of the Year, led Puyallup to the state playoffs for the first time in school history. The Vikings will play Todd Beamer in the semifinals at 7 tonight at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood.
Here's a link to the story and all-area team.
This is it. The final prep sports weekend of the school year. There's lots to see -- and read about -- and we'll have it all it all covered.
We'll post updates, scores and results throughout the day. To get you started, here are the state previews that ran in today's newspaper:
StarTrack: Three of a kind hard to beat
2A/1A Track: Sehome's Mason McHenry is ready to run
Baseball: Olympia's pitching propels Bears to semis
Fastpitch: Unbeaten Timberline faces final obstacles on road to title
There's been a bit of movement recently in head coaching positions. Here's what we've got:
Dave Jones has been named Stadium's boys basketball coach. Jones was the interim coach last season when the Tigers went 2-18.
Mount Rainier Lutheran hired Ron Rasmus, former coach of the Wilson Rams, to lead its boys team.
Finally, moving way up north to Whatcom County, Meridian football coach Bob Ames has decided to retire. Ames, who was always recognizable with his backward hat, shorts and Fu-Manchu moustache, led the Trojans to three state titles in 34 seasons.

Bethel senior Sadena Parks won her second Class 4A girls golf state championship on Wednesday.
The University of Washington-bound golfer trailed Kentwood's Rui Li heading into the final round at Sudden Valley Golf Club in Bellingham. Parks made up three strokes on the front nine and trailed Li by one on No. 17. Parks birdied the hole and Li double-bogeyed, giving Parks a lead she would hold on to.
"She hit some shots down the stretch that were incredible," Bethel golf coach Jim Ball said.
Parks birdied No. 18, shooting 67 for a two-round total of 142. Li would have been second at 145, but she signed for 144 and was disqualified.
Parks made a similar final-round move up the leaderboard when she won her first championship in 2006. She trailed by five strokes with five holes left and went on to win.
Life Christian freshman Kristin Rue won the 2B/1B girls championship, helping her team win the team title, too. Enumclaw's girls claimed the 3A championship.
The News Tribune's All-Area softball team ran in today's paper. Stadium pitcher Jordyn Kurtz earned Player of the Year honors and Tony Batinovich of Puyallup was Coach of the Year.
Here is the story on Kurtz and the all-area list .
The News Tribune ran its All-Area Baseball Team in today's newspaper. Puyallup pitcher Adam Cimber was named Player of the Year and Olympia's Todd McDougall is Coach of the Year.
Here's the story on Cimber, a sidearm pitcher who in a three-game stretch this season threw a two-hitter, a no-hitter and a one-hitter.
Here is the list of all-area selections.

Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester threw a no-hitter Monday night against the Kansas City Royals.
Lester is well known in the South Sound. The 2002 Bellarmine Prep graduate was The News Tribune's All-Area Baseball Player of the Year in 2001, Gatorade State Player of the Year in 2000 and a three-time Narrows League MVP.
You can read TNT columnist John McGrath's take on Lester's no-hitter here. Multimedia magician Joe Barrentine has assembled a slideshow of Lester's memorable night right here.

It's a big day in prep sports. Baseball regionals around the state begin, we've got the softball and tennis district tournaments at Sprinker Recreation Center and I'm at the 4A and 3A district track meets at Mount Tahoma.
Like yesterday, I'll post updates throughout the day. Though I'm doubting that many folks will be reading since it's so nice outside. But for those who want their track and field fix, I'm here for you.
I'm looking forward to a few races. First, I want to see Kentwood's Devin St. Clair and Bethel's Radio Battle in the 4A boys 100. Can Bellarmine Prep's Kelly Jacka win the 100, 200 and 400? Will the Bellarmine Prep girls 4x100 break the meet record of 47.69 seconds? Emerald Ridge's Kayla Stueckle is the top see in the 4A girls 100 and 300 hurdles. The sophomore set the meet record in the 300 yesterday.
Plenty to watch today.
I've also learned that the Tacoma Invitational track and field meet will return to Lincoln Bowl next spring.
Here are the field events that are complete. The running prelims are still two hours from completion. Whew...long day.

The Bellarmine Prep girls 4x100 relay team plans on challenging the 4A West Central District record in the event.
"We've got to get our handoffs perfect," anchor-leg Brianna Okoro said. "If we do that, I'm thinking we break the record. Maybe even run a 47.3"
Curtis set the record at 47.69 seconds in 2003. The Lions ran 48.04 today, a season-best by .02 seconds. That's still a bit off the Vikings' pace, but Okoro sees room for improvement.
"We just got Shaquana back and if she's 100 percent we can do it," she said.
Shaquana Logan has missed the last few weeks with a bruise on her left knee. Kelly Jacka and Sarah Hartwell are the other relay members.
I spoke with Spanaway Lake hurdler Darnell Harris about his appeal at the SPSL meet. He said he heard on Wednesday that he would be able to race.
"It was a great feeling," he said. "I didn't know if I was going to be able to run. My coach is a smart man, though, and he knows the rule book."
Harris finished third in his heat in the 110 hurdles earlier today, advancing to the finals tomorrow. The 300 hurdles, which is the event Harris won before race officials ruled it invalid, will be run shortly.
I was able to chat with Fife baseball coach Shane Nixon for a few minutes today. I tried to get a hold of Nixon yesterday for this story, but couldn't reach him.
Anyway, the Trojans are having their best season in school history. Fife won the league title for the first time since 1963 and claimed its first district championship in school history. Nixon said he knew coming into the season that he had a good squad.
"I had 11 seniors and they've all been working for this since they were freshmen at the junior high," he said.
Nixon got quite a surprise from pitcher Jesse Abdon in the 2A West Central District final against Klahowya on Saturday. Abdon had only thrown three innings this season and that outing came early in the season. Abdon battled calf and bicep injuries throughout the season, but threw a complete-game in Fife's 7-1 win.
"It was a shock," Nixon said.
Fife will play Lynden at 1 p.m. Saturday at Yelm High School in the first round of the Class 2A baseball state tournament.
Here's some of what we've seen so far at the 4A West Central District and 3A West Central-Southwest Bi-District track and field meets...
Bellarmine Prep's Shaquana Logan ran the 4A girls 100 hurdles in 14.91 seconds, finishing second behind Gig Harbor's Bree LeRoy (14.65). Logan was clearly not running at 100 percent and is still nursing a bruise on her left knee. She said the goal today and tomorrow is to simply qualify for state.
Decatur's Ezra John Griffey wasn't as fortunate. He grabbed his left hamstring as he crossed the finish line in the 4A boys 100, finishing a disappointing sixth with a time of 11.24. Griffey, who partially tore the muscle at the Shoreline Invitational last month and hasn't competed since, said he might not run in the 300 hurdles later today.
Kentwood's Devin St. Clair and Bethel's Radio Battle each won their heats in the boys 4A 100. They've never run head-to-head in the 100, but will do just that tomorrow. "I'm excited to race St. Clair," Battle said. "I want competition."
Did you know? Battle's real first name is Sirrahkeem. He said his mom "made it up." Only his family calls him that. He's "Radio" to everyone else.
Enumclaw's Conner Larned won the 3A boys discus with a throw of 166 feet, 3 inches. It wasn't Larned's best effort -- he has the best throw in the state this season with a toss of 182 feet, 6 inches -- but it was good enough to win. Larned said he "pushed right" a couple tosses that would have come close to his 180 feet.
Emerald Ridge's Alex Sears, who was the second seed in the 4A boys 110 hurdles, hurt his right leg during the race and finished fifth with a time of 15.61, well off his best of 14.70. He was helped off the track to the trainer's tent, but was able to walk away after getting some ice for his leg.
A handful of field events at the 4A West Central District and 3A West Central-Southwest Bi-District track and field meets started minutes ago at Mount Tahoma High School.
I'll be back throughout the day to post the top times in each preliminary, state qualifiers in today's field events and anything else that's newsworthy.
I'm interested in seeing how the runners -- Decatur's Ezra John Griffey, Rogers' Eric Morrison and Bellarmine Prep's Shaquana Logan -- who were "passed through" at their league meets fare today. Will their injuries be healed enough to qualify for the district finals and then the state meet?
Bellarmine Prep's Kelly Jacka could win three running events. The has the fastest times in 4A in the 100, 200 and 400.
Looking over the heat sheets yesterday I noticed that Spanaway Lake's Darnell Harris is entered in the 4A 300 meter hurdles. I'm glad Harris was given a chance to compete in the event today. At last week's SPSL meet, Harris won the first flight of the event, but meet officials later ruled that the race didn't count because the alternate was not allowed to run after Eric Morrison scratched. So they ran the race at the end of the meet and Harris tripped on a hurdle and finished last.
Here are the events that will be final today:
Girls 3A Long Jump
Girls 3A Shot Put

Girls 4A Javelin

Boys 4A Long Jumo

High school baseball coaches whose teams are in the state regionals on Saturday have a decision to make. Go with your ace, or roll the dice with your No. 2, hoping you win the first game so the No. 1 pitcher can start the regional final?
Most coaches I've spoken with say they're going with their No. 1 in the first game. They don't want to lose with their ace on the bench. Some will always tempt fate.
"I've seen it before," Franklin Pierce coach Jeff Beha said. "Teams throw their No. 2 and they end up losing and their No. 1 guy never got a chance to make a difference."
What would you do?
The boys soccer state quarterfinals begin on Thursday when Mercer Island travels to Shorecrest in the Class 3A tournament. Most of the games will be played on Friday and Saturday.
Narrows League champion Bellarmine Prep travels to Olympia, which upset Sea-King No. 1 Juanita 3-1 on Tuesday.
Eastlake is putting plenty of miles on the bus this week. The Wolves eliminated 4A defending champion Pasco in the Tri-Cities and now must face Mead on Saturday in Spokane.
Puyallup needed a shootout to win its first game in the state tournament, but the Vikings advanced to host Mountain View for a spot in the semifinals.

The state soccer tournament begins tonight and there are plenty of story lines to follow.
Puyallup has followed up its SPSL title with its first state tournament berth in school history. You can read today's story here.
Class 4A could likely crown a new champion. Of the four teams that reached the semifinals last year, only state champ Pasco returns. Class 3A will have a new champion as Hazen did not qualify for state. Runner-up Camas did, however.
How will teams that lost players to club teams fare at state? Can teams gutted by Crossfire go all the way?
If Charles Wright and King's each win their first two games, the teams will have a rematch of last year's semifinals when King's beat the Tarriers 1-0.
On a final note, check out the photo of this soccer fight in Sunday's Bellingham Herald. Not only did the Sehome Mariners beat rival Bellingham 1-0 in a winner-to-state, loser-out game, but one Red Raider left with a broken leg and another a broken nose.
Curtis and Enumclaw are the top seeds in the girls South Sound waterpolo tournament. The event begins Wednesday at Rogers High School.
The Vikings, who went 14-0 and won the West Division, will play Rogers (12-4) in the first round at 7:15 p.m. The Hornets (14-2) will face Wilson (8-6) at 6 p.m. In the two earlier games, Puyallup (12-4) plays Gig Harbor (12-2) at 3:30 p.m. and Peninsula (10-4) meets Auburn Riverside (13-3) at 4:45 p.m.
The semifinals are scheduled for Friday and the final is set for 5:15 p.m. Saturday.
Tuesday: Updated with softball matchups.
Looking for something to fill your afternoons and evenings this week? There are plenty of postseason prep sporting events to pick from.
Boys soccer first-round games will be played across the state on Tuesday and second-round games will be on Thursday and Friday. Baseball regionals are scheduled for Saturday. Don't forget about the distict track, softball, tennis and golf events scattered throughout the week, too.

Ready for one of the busiest weekends of prep sports in the school year? Because that's what we've got in front of us. Baseball, softball, boys soccer, golf and track and field, they're all playing this weekend and some will secure state berths.
The 4A West Central District baseball and boys soccer matchups are the most intriguing. Win and you're in, lose and your season is over. Talk about drama.
I'm looking forward to seeing if Puyallup can bounce back from losing in the SPSL Tournament when the Vikings face South Kitsap for a state berth at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Heritage Park.
The Kentwood-Tahoma boys soccer game is very interesting. The Conquerors won the SPSL North, while the Bears finished third. But Tahoma swept Kentwood in two games in the regular season. We'll see if the Bears have the Conqs number at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethel.,
In the 3A WCD-SW bi-district baseball tournament, seven of the eight remaining teams will get state berths. Two of those teams trying to lock up a spot are Franklin Pierce and Bonney Lake. The two 3A SPSL teams play a winner-to-state game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Auburn Mountainview. The loser will get one more shot to get to state later in the day, but a loss will end their season.
The SPSL and SPSL 3A will finish league softball tournaments on Saturday, while the Narrows will crown its champion tonight when Stadium and Wilson play at 3:30 p.m. at SERA.
Same schedule as before but with results through Thursday and new matchups today and Saturday.
Enjoy.
Wilson High School has hired head coaches for its boys and girls basketball teams.
Dave Alwert, who previously coached at Sumner and Lakes, will lead the boys program and Michelle Birge, who has been an assistant coach at Foss, will guide the girls.
Both coaches have deep ties to Tacoma. Alwert graduated from Mount Tahoma, where he played for former coach Dan Mullen. Birge played for Jim Black at Foss.

From the Associated Press:
Rebounders on free-throw attempts will be positioned along the foul lane three feet farther from the basket during high school basketball games next season.
The National Federation of State High School Associations, the umbrella organization for more than 18,500 U.S. high schools, approved a rule change vacating the two marked lane spaces closest to the basket to reduce rough play and fouls while rebounding missed free throws.
Starting this fall, players will move back one lane space during a free-throw attempt. A new mark also will be applied to the lane line nearest the free-throw line to designate the last lane space. There is no change in the distance from the basket for the shooter.
The change was recommended by the federation’s basketball rules committee after it was tested last season by the Georgia High School Association.
“According to data from the experiment, the number of fouls during free-throw rebounding action was reduced,” NFHS assistant director Mary Struckhoff said Thursday.
“At the same time, defensive rebounding percentages fell within an acceptable range. This data was the most compelling the committee had seen to date.”
The federation also approved a proposal to assess a technical foul to the head coach, rather than the player, if the player’s uniform does not comply with NFHS design specifications. It also clarified an existing rule on headbands and added black and beige to the list of approved colors.
