The Prep Blog
The preps blog is designed to fill in the gaps of our high school sports coverage, providing insight into some of the stories and projects we are pursuing, and to serve as a forum to talk about some of the significant high school sports stories happening in our community.

Doug Pacey joined The News Tribune in 2007 after covering prep sports at The Bellingham Herald for five years. He graduated from Issaquah High School in 1998 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Kansas in 2002. E-mail Doug.

I believe we'll learn quite a bit about a few teams tonight and Saturday.

Take the SPSL South. Graham-Kapowsin visits No. 9 Puyallup on Saturday night in a showdown of two teams that appear to be good enough to win the league title. In University Place tonight, No. 6 Rogers visits Curtis. The Rams offense has been unstoppable so far this season -- here's my story on Rogers' offense that ran in today's newspaper. But don't write off Curtis. The Vikings have some talent and they'll be ready.

In the Narrows League, we'll get to see what Wilson's made of when the undefeated Rams host fifth-ranked Olympia tonight.

The Olympic Western League begins league play this week. Olympic visits North Thurston and Timberline travels to ninth-ranked North Kitsap tonight in games that will reveal a lot about each team.

Here's a recap of last night's action:

-- A week after Enumclaw stunned Franklin Pierce, the Hornets fell 30-7 at Sumner. All of a sudden, the Spartans are 2-1 and have doubled last season's win total.

-- Tahoma scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat Kentwood 28-14. The Bears are 3-0 in the SPSL North.

-- London Vessey ran for 171 yards in third-ranked Tumwater's 28-14 win over River Ridge.

Now, let's get to the picks. Two weeks into the season, the guests are leading the picks. That should change this week, as news reporter Scott Fontaine, a former sports freelancer, takes a stab at prognosticating.
