The playoff picture is coming into focus. The Narrows League finalized its postseason berths last night and victories by Bethel and Enumclaw on Thursday made determined some seeding in the SPSL South and SPSL 3A.

Plenty more to be determined tonight. Kentwood and Kentlake are playing for a trip to the postseason. Bonney Lake is in with a win over Sumner. Tumwater can cap an undefeated regular season with a win over Centralia. Or the Tigers can force a three-way tie for first in the Evergree Conference if they top the Thunderbirds and Black Hills beats W.F. West. On Saturday, Nisqually 1A co-leaders Orting and Cascade Christian go head-to-head on Saturday with the league title on the line.

Check back late tonight. We'll have the playoff seeds and matchups posted here.

The following playoff seeds are known for sure. To see our predictions, click here.

3. Bethel

SPSL 3A

2. Peninsula
3. Enumclaw
4. TBD

No teams in the Olympic Western, Evergreen, Nisqually Olympic and Nisqually 1A/2B have secured a particular seed. To see the playoff scenarios in those leagues, click here.

With that housekeeping out of the way, let me tell you about an interesting matchup in tonight's Auburn-Auburn Riverside game. Brennett Rodseth, a two-way starter for the Ravens, is the son of Trojans assistant coach Kent Rodseth. Barb Rodseth, Brennett's mom and Kent's wife, says her son is "part of the Auburn family" and expects tonight's game to be especially emotional. I saw Brennett mingling with the Auburn players and coaches after last week's win over Tahoma, so there's obviously some connections.

Wonder what team mom is cheering for?

This week's guest picker is Bellarmine Prep QB/DB Luke Schindele. He scored three touchdowns last night, helping lead the Lions to a 21-12 win over Mount Tahoma and clinch a playoff berth.

SPSL NORTH
Kentlake (4-3) at Kentwood (5-2)
7 p.m. today at French Field

The lowdown:
Winner not only sweeps the other three city programs, but will move on to the playoffs. If Kentwood extends its series win streak to six, it clinches SPSL North’s No. 2 seed.
Why the Falcons will win: They won’t even remember they had a four-game skid before last week’s 21-0 shutout victory over Auburn Riverside if they can beat the big-boy program tonight. Kentlake has little margin for error. Establishing RB Taylor Angevine (92 rushes, 561 yards, two TDs) early should open passing lanes for QB Lewi Larson (72-of-163, 733 yards, five TDs).
Why the Conquerors will win: Kentwood has won five consecutive games, and it comes down to one primary reason – forcing turnovers. At one point, the Conks were at minus-1 in turnover ratio. Now, they’re plus-16. The interior of the defensive line, led by DTs Greg Humphreys and Nathan Herrick, and NG Robert Sims, has been dominant.
The News Tribune pick: Can’t see the Conquerors losing and leaving a home playoff game on the table.
Kentwood 23, Kentlake 12

NISQUALLY 1A/2B
No. 4 Orting (8-0) at No. 5 Cascade Christian (7-1)
7 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Chev Stadium

The lowdown:
One of these two programs has won the past three Nisqually titles. Cascade Christian snapped a two-game losing streak to Orting with a 27-21 road win en route to the 2007 league championship.
Why the Cardinals will win: They have athletes everywhere, but it’s their aggressive nature that needs to be reeled in Saturday. If Orting overpursues – a big reason why it’s only giving up 43 rushing yards per game – the Cougars have patient tailbacks who use cutback lanes for long runs. On offense, QB Nick Wilkins (108-of-185, 1,536 yards, 19 TDs) hasn’t thrown an interception in five games.
Why the Cougars will win: Cascade Christian’s advantage comes on the defensive line with mobile DLs Neil Fuhrmann, Taylor Colton and Matt McDonald. QB Ben Johnson (70-of-94, 807 yards, 12 TDs) returns after a broken hand sidelined him for two games.
The News Tribune pick: The offenses should have the upper hand, and a healthy Wilkins should be better than a rusty Johnson.
Orting 34, Cascade Christian 31

EVERGREEN CONF.
Centralia (6-2) at No. 3 Tumwater (8-0)
7 p.m. today at Tumwater Stadium

The lowdown:
Tumwater has never lost in EvCo play (20-game winning streak), and a win today would earn the No. 1 playoffs seed for the Thunderbirds. Centralia won 9-6 at Tumwater in 2004, its last victory in the series.
Why the Tigers will win: They have tradition, they punish teams with the wing-T, and they’ve won four of their past five games, including a 21-3 decision over W.F. West to claim the “Swamp Cup.” Centralia likes to play uptempo, and has explosive inside-outside punch in RBs Zach Baldwin (1,046 yards, first 10th grader in program history to crack 1,000 yards) and Devon Hughes (755 yards).
Why the Thunderbirds will win: Coach Sid Otton prefers to grind drives out on the ground, but has loosened the reins on QB Rocky Hinkle (50-of-83, 1,081 yards, 16 TDs), who has flashy targets in TE Daniel DeVries (team-leading nine TDs) and WR Kyle Warner (16 catches, 262 yards).
The News Tribune pick: This figures to be a track meet, and that suits the Thunderbirds just fine.
Tumwater 40, Centralia 28

SPSL 3A
Sumner (4-4) at Bonney Lake (4-4)
7 p.m. today at Sunset Chev Stadium

The lowdown:
Both teams need a win – and help – to earn the fourth and final spot to the playoffs. The teams have split two meetings, with Bonney Lake winning last year, 41-6.
Why the Spartans will win: Coach Keith Ross is a realist about rivalry games. “Throw out schemes. Kids win this game,” he said. And Sumner intends to be physical with RBs Ryan Halvorsen (86 rushes, 549 yards, five TDs) and Alex Griffith (94 rushes, 413 yards, two TDs), but needs to take shots with WR Zeric Cage (seven total TDs) deep.
Why the Panthers will win: They’ve got the easiest route to earning a playoff spot if they win and Peninsula beats Franklin Pierce in Purdy. Coach Jeff Gardner said he’ll likely get updates on that game from the press box. RB Aaron Quevedo (73 rushes, 596 yards, six TDs) will play with a broken toe.
The News Tribune pick: Preseason SPSL 3A contender Panthers take adventurous route to getting back to postseason.
Bonney Lake 21, Sumner 20

BEST IN STATE
No. 6 West Seattle (8-0) vs. No . 7 Eastside Catholic (7-1)
7:30 p.m. today at Memorial Stadium, Seattle

The Wildcats haven’t won a league title since 1961. The Crusaders have gone without one since 1993. One of them will break through when the two teams square off for the Metro League championship. West Seattle is led by speedy playmakers Aaron Grymes and T.J. Lee. Eastside Catholic boasts a big weapon in Marion Bactol, who has returned three punts and two kickoffs for touchdowns.
The News Tribune pick: West Seattle 33, Eastside Catholic 27.

I just spent a few minutes interviewing Abdul Gaddy, the University of Washington's newest and highest-profile basketball commitment. I'm working on a story for Thursday's paper -- I'll post it here, too -- but here are the most interesting nuggets:

-- Gaddy said he would have stuck with his original decision to attend Arizona if former assistant coaches Miles Simon and Josh Pastner were still there. Long-time head coach Lute Olson unexpectedly retired last week, prompting Gaddy to give a verbal commitment to the Huskies. He plans on signing during the early signing period in November.

-- Washington fans can thank current Husky and former Curtis High star Isaiah Thomas for having a hand in Gaddy going to to UW. Gaddy said Thomas was "a big part" of him choosing Washington. "He's like family," Gaddy said.

-- Gaddy says he'll be at Washington for at least two years and then will hopefully declare for the NBA Draft. But he intends on finishing his degree because he "promised my mom" he would.

-- Finally, don't sleep on Bellarmine Prep just because texas recruit Avery Bradley left for a Nevada prep school in August. The Lions have Jordan Cain, Romece Barnes, Donald Gaddy (Abdul's younger brother) and others to help fill the void left by Bradley.

"We're definitely going to be good," Gaddy said. "People might think we're not going to be good because Avery left. We're going to surprise some people."

There are fewer "if Team A beats Team B" scenarios this week, but some leagues, especially the Narrows and SPSL 3A, have much to be determined in their final week of the regular season.

Let's get to it.

Narrows League
Playoff berths:
Four, plus a pig-tail game with the SPSL South No. 4
Who’s in: Olympia, Gig Harbor
Contenders: Bellarmine Prep, Central Kitsap, Foss, Mount Tahoma, South Kitsap
The lowdown: Here’s what we know: Olympia is No. 1, Gig Harbor is No. 2 and Central Kitsap can claim the No. 3 seed by beating Wilson. After that, things get dicey.
Consider some of the scenarios:
-- If Olympia beats Foss and South Kitsap beats Lincoln, the Wolves are No. 4 and the winner of the Bellarmine Prep-Mount Tahoma game is No. 5.
-- If Olympia beats Foss and Lincoln beats South Kitsap, the Bellarmine Prep-Mount Tahoma winner is No. 4.
-- If there is a four-way tie among Foss, Mount Tahoma, South Kitsap and Lincoln, Lincoln is the No. 5 seed. In this scenario Bellarmine Prep would have beat Mount Tahoma and received the No. 4 seed.
-- If there is a four-way tie among Foss, Bellarmine, South Kitsap and Lincoln, a mini-playoff would be played on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Mount Tahoma.

SPSL North
Playoff berths:
Four
Who’s in: Auburn, Federal Way, Tahoma
Contenders: Kentlake, Kentwood
The lowdown: Kentwood can go from being the league’s No. 2 seed to out of the playoffs with a loss to Kentlake on Friday. If the Conquerors win, they are the No. 2 seed. If Federal Way and the Falcons win, Kentlake will be No. 4 and Tahoma will be No. 3. Auburn has already clinched the No. 1 seed.

SPSL South
Playoff berths: Three, plus a pig-tail game with the Narrows League No. 5
Who’s in: Curtis, Bethel, Graham-Kapowsin, Rogers
The lowdown: We know who’s in the playoffs, just not in what order. If all four teams win this week, the seeding will be Curtis, Rogers, Bethel and Graham-Kapowsin.

SPSL 3A
Playoff berths:
Four
Who’s in: Lakes, Peninsula
Contenders: Auburn Mountainview, Bonney Lake, Enumclaw, Sumner
The lowdown: This is the trickiest of all the playoff scenarios. Lakes is No. 1 and Peninsula is No. 2. If Enumclaw beats winless White River, the Hornets are No. 3. Sticking with an Enumclaw victory, if Bonney Lake beats Sumner, the Panthers get the No. 4 seed. If Sumner beats Bonney Lake, Auburn Mountainview gets the No. 4 seed.
Then consider this headache-inducer: If White River beats Enumclaw and Franklin Pierce beats Peninsula, a four-way tie for third would be created.

Olympic WesternPlayoff berths: Four
Who’s in: Capital, Timberline, North Kitsap
Contenders: North Thurston, Olympic, Yelm
The lowdown: Olympic’s win over North Kitsap last week gave Capital the inside track on the OWL’s No. 1 seed. If Capital, Timberline and North Kitsap all win this week, they will be the Nos. 1-2-3 seeds. If Olympic beats Bremerton, the Trojans will be the No. 4 seed. Yelm gets in if it wins and Olympic loses. North Thurston gets in if it wins and Yelm and Olympic lose. If there’s a three-way tie for fourth, Olympic is in based on points differential.

Evergeen Conference
Playoff berths: Four
Who’s in: Black Hills, Centralia, Tumwater, W.F. West
Contenders: None
The lowdown: The conference’s four playoff teams are finalized; all that’s left is to play for seeding. Tumwater can clinch the league title and No. 1 seed with a win over Centralia on Friday. The teams will play crossover games with the Greater St. Helens League 2A next week.

Nisqually Olympic
Playoff berths: Three
Who’s in: None
Contenders: Eatonville, Fife, North Mason, Sequim, Steilacoom
The lowdown: Undefeated Steilacoom can clinch the No. 1 seed with a win in one of its next two games. Sequim remains on pace to get the No. 2, leaving a trio of 3-2 teams – Eatonville, Fife and North Mason – vying for the final playoff berth. Fife has the toughest path, facing North Mason this week and Sequim the next.

Nisqually League 1A/2B
Playoff berths:
Three
Who’s in: Cascade Christian, Orting, Vashon
The lowdown: The league title and automatic state playoff berth are likely on the line when Orting visits Cascade Christian on Saturday. The Cougars and Cardinals have already secured playoff berths, but the league champion doesn’t have to mess with a state play-in game. Even if Vashon loses its final two games and finishes tied with Charles Wright and Port Townsend, the Pirates beat both teams and hold the head-to-head tiebreaker, giving them the No. 3 seed. Vashon will play the No. 2 seed from the Northwest District.

Class 2B school Life Christian has secured a berth in a pig-tail game with the No. 2 seed from the Sea-Tac League on Nov. 11. If Life Christian wins that half-game, the Eagles will advance that night to play another half-game against the No. 2 seed from the Northwest League with a state berth on the line.

Timberline High's Cameron Peck has been named the 2008 Rolex Junior Golfer of the Year. Victoria Tanco of Bradenton, Fla., was the girls' recipient.

Here's the release:

Introduced by the AJGA in 1978, the Rolex Junior Player of the Year award recognizes one boy and one girl who had the most outstanding year in junior golf events at the national level. Past recipients include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Charles Howell III, Hunter Mahan, Grace Park, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel.

Both ended the season ranked No. 1 in the Polo Golf Rankings, helping them earn this distinction and secure spots on their respective Rolex Junior All-America First Teams.

Peck’s year was highlighted by four victories, including two wins at AJGA Invitationals and the U.S. Junior Amateur. Peck is the first player from the Pacific Northwest, boy or girl, to win this award, which is being bestowed in 2008 for the 31st time. The Timberline High School senior has verbally committed to Texas A&M University.

Some things to remember this week:

-- If Kentlake beats Kentwood, the Falcons are in the playoffs and the Conquerors are out, no matter what else happens in the SPSL North. Every tie-breaker leaves Kentwood out. But we're predicting that Kentwood wins, giving the Conks the No. 2 seed in the SPSL North.

-- The four teams from the SPSL South are set -- Curtis, Rogers, Bethel and Graham-Kapowsin -- all we're waiting for is the seeding. Assuming Curtis beats Emerald Ridge, Rogers beats Puyallup and Bethel beats Spanway Lake, here's the seeding: No. 1 Curtis, No. 2 Rogers, No. 3 Bethel, No. 4 Graham-Kapowsin. Other scenarios have different seedings, but this is most likely.

-- Lots left to decide in the Narrows League. Olympia and Gig Harbor are Nos. 1-2. Central Kitsap will be No. 3 with a win over Wilson this week. That leaves South Kitsap, Bellarmine Prep, Mount Tahoma and Foss are all in the hunt for the final two seeds.

-- The SPSL 3A is a "what if" nightmare to figure out. For sanity's sake, first let's assume Enumclaw will beat White River and take the No. 3 seed. That leaves Auburn Mountainview, Bonney Lake, and Sumner vying for the final playoff berth. If Bonney Lake beats Sumner, the Panthers are in. If the Spartans win, Auburn Mountainview is in.

But if White River beats Enumclaw and Franklin Pierce beats Peninsula, that would create two scenarios (one with Bonney Lake beating Sumner and the other with Sumner beating Bonney Lake) with a four-way tie for third. There are too many variables to list here, but we've got Enumclaw getting the No. 3 seed and Bonney Lake taking the No. 4.

-- Olympic's upset of North Kitsap last week puts the Trojans in good position to get the Olympic Western's No. 4 seed. It also all but secured the No. 1 seed for Capital and the No. 2 to Timberline, giving both Thurston County schools home games in Week 10.

-- The Metro League has a three-way tie for second in the Sound Division between Franklin, Nathan Hale and Rainier Beach. I'm picking Beach and Hale to make it out.

-- In Wesco 3A, it's win and you're in this week when Everett travels to Meadowdale and Glacier Peak visits Shorecrest. Whatever team gets the No. 3 berth will most likely play Sedro-Woolley in a Tuesday play-in game for the right to take on Bellevue in Week 10.

We're getting better with the predictions, this week 11 of 13 4A matchups and 8 of 14 3A matchups are the same as last week. Since the preliminary round matchups will be determined this week, we'll soon know just how close to the mark our predictions are.

Thoughts on the Week 9 rankings:

-- If there were ties in these rankings, Olympia and Auburn would be tied at No. 2 in Class 4A. Both these teams are good. They have stout defenses, extremely efficient offenses and great coaching staffs.

-- Ferris falls to No. 6 after losing to reiging 4A champion Lewis and Clark.

-- I will not be surprised to see any of the Nos. 7-10 teams in our 4A rankings to reach the state semifinals. There are that many capable teams in 4A this year, and that will make for some interesting and exciting first-round and quarterfinal matchups.

-- Peninsula reappears in the 3A rankings. It's tough to win at Pete's Pool in Enumclaw, but the Seahawks did just that, getting timely special teams boosts from Darrian Creamer.

-- No. 3 Orting visits No. 5 Cascade Christian this week.

Abdul Gaddy told The Los Angeles Times that he is considering UCLA and the University of Washington.

"As of right now I don't know what I'm doing yet," Gaddy said. "My top places would probably be UCLA or Washington right now, but I've got to sit down and talk to my parents and my coaches."

The Bellarmine Prep standout had given a verbal commitment to the University or Arizona, but is rethinking that decision after long-time coach Lute Olson announced his retirement earlier this week.

Gaddy, rated as the No. 2 point guard in the nation by Scout.com, said he might take an official visit to Washington. He visited UCLA and Arizona in September. He said there is no timetable for making a decision.

Welcome to Week 8, where "tiebreaker criteria" takes its place as one of the most important phrases in high school football lexicon.

There's only one way to not have to worry about "head-to-head," "power point," "point differential" and the dreaded "mini-playoff."

Win.

Victories are especially important for the teams in the following games.
-- Tahoma at Auburn
-- Puyallup at Bethel
-- Kentwood at Kentridge
-- Mount Tahoma at Gig Harbor
-- Orting at Vashon
-- Peninsula at Enumclaw

Auburn can clinch a share of the SPSL North title by beating Tahoma, which, could fall to No. 4 if Kentwood and Federal Way continue to win.

Puyallup and Bethel are essentially playing for the postseason tonight. Curtis has a handle on getting the No. 1 seed, though Rogers and even Graham-Kapowsin are technically still in the running.

My story in today's paper explains who's in and who's still contending for playoff berths.

Keep tabs on tonight's game by subscribing to the TNT's Twitter feed. Sign up, search for tntsports and get scores texted to your cell phone.

If you missed it, here's my rundown on possible Week 10 playoff matchups in 4A and 3A. And here are our rankings.

Before we get to the picks, ESPN RISE named Stadium Bowl one of the 13 best high school stadiums in the country.

Here's what it had to say:
Folks in the Northwest have been writing about this place for years. You may have seen it in the movie "10 Things I Hate About You." For beauty, it's tough to beat, with a breathtaking view of Puget Sound. The stadium itself sits below Stadium High School in Tacoma, which was built in 1910. A luxury hotel was supposed to be built on the hill, but it burned in a fire. The school and stadium were built instead based on what didn't burn. In addition to Friday night football, Stadium Bowl also has hosted speeches and other community events. Wilson High of Tacoma also plays its home football games there.

This week's guest picker is Pat Austin. He's Franklin Pierce graduate and one of the NHRA's all-time winningest drivers in drag racing. Most of his victories came in the Alcohol Funny Car division.

SPSL NORTH
Tahoma (5-2) at No. 4 Auburn (7-0)
7 p.m. Friday at Auburn's Memorial Stadium

The lowdown: An Auburn victory would clinch a third league title in the past four seasons, and first at 4A since the Trojans won the SPSL North in 2005. That was the last time these two programs met, with Auburn winning 24-21.
Why the Bears will win: Tahoma will have to pick it up offensively in order to hang around with Auburn. In the past three games, the Bears have scored 10 or fewer points. In fact, their best weapon has been PK Britton Jolley (SPSL-best six field goals), who kicked three FGs in last week's 9-7 win over Kentlake. Rash of recent penalties and turnovers have hurt, especially in the red zone.
Why the Trojans will win: Coach Gordon Elliott confirmed the obvious this week – this is as good a rushing offense he's ever had in his 32 years of coaching. Auburn is piling up more than 400 yards on the ground per game, led by RBs Chris Young (68 rushes, 710 yards, six TDs) and Jeff Gouveia (90 rushes, 682 yards, SPSL-best 19 TDs) and two outstanding sophomore lineman in C Nick Conlan and LT Danny Shelton.
The News Tribune pick: Nobody has matched up with the Trojans up front, and their grinding style will pay dividends again this week.
Auburn 23, Tahoma 12

SPSL SOUTH
Puyallup (5-2) at Bethel (4-3)
7 p.m. Friday at Art Crate Field

The lowdown: Two streaks could end today if the Braves prevail. First, they would end a four-game skid to Puyallup. Secondly, it would all but guarantee that coach Tom Ingles would miss the playoffs for the first time with the Vikings.
Why the Vikings will win: Ingles is one of the best at making adjustments, and he'll need to make a crucial one now that WR Justin Veltung (foot) is lost for the season with a turf toe injury that will require surgery. Puyallup will try and run the ball more, leaning heavily on RB Jorey Johnson (94 rushes, 608 yards, two TDs), who also replaces Veltung on special-teams returns.
Why the Braves will win: Bethel is getting healthy at the right time, especially on defense with LB Mike Ruth (groin), S Isaac Winters (foot) and CB Travis Otis (groin) returning. The last time this group was playing together, it held Curtis to 180 total yards at the beginning of the season. RB Anthony Meray (97 rushes, 998 yards, eight TDs), the SPSL rushing leader, has posted six consecutive 100-yard games.
The News Tribune pick: Young talent puts Bethel in prime position to grab No. 3 or 4 SPSL South playoff seed.
Bethel 30, Puyallup 21

EVERGREEN CONFERENCE
Black Hills (6-1) at No. 3 Tumwater (7-0)
7 p.m. Friday at Tumwater Stadium

The lowdown: The winner is guaranteed at least a share of the Ev-Co championship. Tumwater has never lost a game in this league, and is riding a 19-game winning streak. Last Black Hills victory against the Thunderbirds was 2004 (34-21 win).
Why the Wolves will win: Who said an old dog can't learn new tricks? To accentuate the dual-threat talent of QB Mike Haupert (90 rushes, 765 yards, eight TDs; 278 passing yards), coach Jack Zilla switched to the shot gun this season. Expect RB Cody Peterson (153 rushes, 1,377 yards, 18 TDs) to get 25-30 carries today. At 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, he certainly has the frame to do it.
Why the Thunderbirds will win: Talk about a program with resolve, Tumwater lost its starting backfield, RB London Vessey (collarbone) and FB Josh Quintero (knee, to season-ending injuries in recent weeks. FB Chris Weston (45 rushes, 250 yards, six TDs) becomes the primary ball carrier, and QB Rocky Hinkle (35-of-63, 860 yards, 14 TDs) is playing efficiently in play-action situations.
The News Tribune pick: Up-tempo game could favor the team with depth, and Tumwater has only one two-way player in WR/FS Kyle Warner.
Tumwater 35, Black Hills 30

NISQUALLY LEAGUE 1A/2B
No. 4 Orting (7-0) at Vashon (5-2)
7 p.m. Friday at Vashon Stadium

The lowdown: Along with defending league champion Cascade Christian, both teams are 4-0 in Nisqually play – and the three schools play one another in the final three weeks. Orting won back-to-back Nisqually titles in 2005 and 2006. Vashon last defeated the Cardinals 24-21 in 1997.
Why the Cardinals will win: They can run with RBs Grant Angle (83 rushes, 725 yards, eight TDs) and Braden Cordes (29 rushes, 315 yards, 10 TDs), pass with QB Nick Wilkins (91-of-161, 1,329 yards, 16 TDs) and have shut down opposing rushing attacks to the tune of 39 yards per game. No wonder coach Marty Parkhurst figures this is one of his most well-rounded teams.
Why the Pirates will win: Yes, the island is rocking for tonight's matchup. RB Nathan Betz (136 rushes, 677 yards, five TDs) is a bruiser who spearheads the Pirates' ball-control attack. The biggest challenge will be to offset Orting's stunting and twisting at the line of scrimmage. LG Timmy Jovanich is physical, RG Kyle Bakker is technically-sound and both pull often to open holes for Betz.
The News Tribune pick: It's all about the Cardinals' start. A quick one, and they cruise. A slow one, and they're in for a fight to the finish.
Orting 24, Vashon 14

State Game of the Week
Lewis and Clark (5-2) at No. 3 Ferris (7-0)
8 p.m. Friday at Albi Stadium

The reigning Class 4A champions visit Ferris for a Greater Spokane League showdown with playoff implications. The Saxons can clinch the GSL’s No. 1 seed with a victory. The Tigers must win their final two games to return to the postseason to defend their championship.
TNT pick: Ferris 24, Lewis and Clark 19

The fall sports playoffs begin in earnest this week.

Here are some highlights:

The Narrows League has its cross country championships today and the South Puget Sound League will run tomorrow. Mount Rainier Lutheran's second-ranked boys team will go for the Sea-Tac League championship Thursday at Port Orchard.

The SPSL 4A golf tournament begins today at Gold Mountain Golf Club and the SPSL/WCC 3A is at Chambers Bay today. (There's a reason to go out for the high school golf team).

League swim meets get going on Friday and Saturday.

Soccer and volleyball get started next week.

In football news...

Skyline is ranked No. 8 in the nation by USA Today.

Renton and Tyee had a double-forfeit after 35 players were ejected from their game on Friday night. A lack of players has forced Tyee to forfeit the rest of its season.

Finally, a reader e-mailed me recently, asking if there was any correlation between having a great freshman and/or junior varsity football team means a varsity team will be great two or three years down the road.

What do you think? Does success at the freshman or JV team mean the varsity will have success in the future?

We're back with the second edition of predicting the prep football playoffs. For the record, 11 of the 27 matchups predicted in the first edition remain the same. Not a bad effort. Rogers' win over Graham-Kapowsin and Kentwood's upset of Federal Way wreaked havoc on my Class 4A predictions. Capital's win over Timberline affected three 3A games.

Here are some notes about the Week 10 playoff matchups:

-- If it holds up, I know what game I'll be covering on Friday, Nov. 7 -- Federal Way at No. 8 Gig Harbor. That's a matchup worthy of the state quarterfinals.

-- Capital's win over Timberline on Saturday creates the possibility of a three-way tie for first in the Olympic Western League. Because each of the three teams has a 1-1 record against the other two, the tie-breaker is "points differential" in games involving the three teams. That would make North Kitsap No. 1, Capital No. 2 and Timberline No. 3.

-- We're predicting the SPSL 3A's playoff teams to be Lakes, Peninsula, Enumclaw and Bonney Lake. But Auburn Mountainview and Sumner are still in the hunt. Enumclaw can overtake the Seahawks for the No. 2 spot with a win over Peninsula on Friday. If Sumner and Bonney Lake both win this week, their Week 9 meeting will be for a postseason berth.

-- The Wesco 3A has the toughest conference to predict. Everett, Glacier Peak, Meadowdale and Shorecrest are all still eligible for the playoffs and there is no clear front-runner. I went Glacier Peak, Shorecrest then Meadowdale, but I won't be surprised if this order change in the next two weeks.

-- Yelm's 27-21 overtime win over North Thurston on Friday might be enough to push the Tornados into the postseason. Yelm and the Rams each have games remaining against Timberline and Capital. Yelm and North Thurston are both 3-2 in Olympic Western League games.

If we learned one thing in Week 7, it is this: Skyline is good. Really good.

The top-ranked Spartans walloped previously third-ranked Issaquah 38-0 last week. The Eagles were without a couple key players, but it didn't appear that it mattered.

Skyline's defense has allowed only eight points this season -- the first-string has not allowed any points. The Spartans play Redmond this week before facing Crown Division champion Bothell for the KingCo Championship on Oct. 31.

A few notes about this week's rankings:

-- Kentwood's 24-7 win over Federal Way knocked the Eagles out of the Class 4A Top 10. Taking Federal Way's place is Bothell, which has won five straight since starting 0-2 with losses to Bellevue and Issaquah.

-- Despite losing 27-24 to Ferris, Central Valley remains at No. 6. I couldn't justify dropping them simply because they lost a close game to a very good team.

-- In the 3A rankings, the top seven teams stayed put. Liberty and O'Dea swapped spots because the Irish lost 17-14 in double-overtime to No. 7 Eastside Catholic. Also, Hanford takes North Kitsap's spot at No. 10.

-- All 10 teams in the 2A rankings won, so there are no changes.

-- Montesano took over the No. 3 spot in the 1A rankings after shutting out previous No. 3 Forks, 19-0. Castle Rock and Cascade (Leavenworth) flipped spots.

Foss nearly pulled off the upset on Friday night. The Falcons trailed 21-12 late in the fourth quarter. Foss scored 14-unanswered points, taking advantage of a South Kitsap turnover, to take a 26-21 lead with less than three minutes to play.

South Kitsap running back Sean Allison ended Foss' upset hopes when he scampered 68 yards for a game-winning touchdown with 56 seconds left in the game.

The win would have been Foss' first over South Kitsap since 1979 and helped the Falcons move closer to a postseason berth. Now, Foss must beat third-ranked Olympia in two weeks.

There are plenty of big football games being played in the state tonight. Unfortunately, many of them will not be played in the South Sound.

Here are the biggest games:

Class 4A
No. 1 Skyline at No. 2 Issaquah
No. 4 Ferris at No. 6 Central Valley

Class 3A
No. 7 Eastside Catholic at No. 8 O'Dea
No. 6 West Seattle at Rainier Beach

Class 1A
No. 8 Cascade at No. 2 Cashmere

Class 1B
No. 4 Lacrosse-Washtucna at No. 5 Touchet

The biggest game, of course is Skyline-Issaquah. It's rare to get a No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the regular season. But no less important, at least for playoff implications, are the two Metro League showdowns and the Ferris-Central Valley game. The winners of those contests will have an easier playoff draws.

The South Sound's biggest game turned out to be a blowout. Rogers thumped Graham-Kapowsin 35-7 on Thursday. That means Curtis can claim the SPSL South's No. 1 seed to the Week 10 preliminary playoff round off the Vikings win their remaining games.

Shelton knew it had a difficult challenge when the Highclimbers face No. 3 Olympia tonight. It just got tougher. The Olympian reported that 14 Highclimbers have declared academically ineligble for tonight's game.

In case you missed it, I made a post earlier this week that predicted the 4A and 3A Week 10 playoff matchups. Also, here are this week's TNT and AP rankings. You won't find much difference between the two.

This week's guest picker is Kenny Via. If you've ever reported a score or called The News Tribune looking for a score, you've probably talked to Kenny. He's a Peninsula High School graduate and says he was the definition of a "good hands" reciver, which means he's slow.

NISQUALLY OLYMPIC
Fife (4-2) at Eatonville (3-3)
7 p.m. Friday at Eatonville Stadium

The lowdown: Winner takes a big step in securing one of the league's three berths to the postseason. Teams have split the last four meetings, with the Trojans winning at Eatonville last season, 26-7.
Why the Trojans will win: Ball security, especially after fumbling six times in a 35-24 loss two weeks ago to Steilacoom, has become a critical issue for coach Kent Nevin – so much, the team went back to ball-handling drills in practice. It paid off as the Trojans blanked Klahowya, 26-0, last week with no turnovers. RBs Alex Rohrer (46 carries, 468 yards, four TDs) paces wing-T attack finally hitting its stride.
Why the Cruisers will win: This team has issues on offense, and it likely won't get much better with QB Nick Fairhart (undisclosed illness) sidelined the next couple weeks. Sophomore QB Kyle Edwards (9-of-20, 130 yards, TD) will start his second game. The defense, led by LBs Jeremy Leonard (10.7 tackles per game) and Mark Hoffman (9.2 tpg) will have to continue to keep games close.
The News Tribune pick: Just a hunch, but with their backs against the wall, the Cruisers will rally around Edwards and spirited home crowd.
Eatonville 17, Fife 13

OLYMPIC WESTERN LEAGUE
Timberline (5-1) at Capital (3-3)
7 p.m. Saturday at Ingersoll Stadium

The lowdown: A Blazers' win, and that would almost guarantee them a share of their fifth league championship in the past six seasons. Timberline has won the past two against Capital, including a 6-0 victory last year in Olympia.
Why the Blazers will win: It ain't pretty, but Timberline is getting it done in the fourth quarter (63-44 scoring advantage), including last week's last-minute scoring drive to beat Port Angeles. QB Delas Raiford (60-of-81, 630 yards, six TDs) is a dual threat, usually looking for WR Ronnie Hamlin (54 receptions, 726 yards, nine TDs), and RB Jordan Radcliffe (56 carries, 420 yards, three TDs) has been an able replacement for Immanuel Garraway (knee).
Why the Cougars will win: Isn't the wounded animal usually the most dangerous? Capital still has enough big athletes to take care of business Saturday, but could get a big boost if RB Riley Wall (ankle) can go. His brother, Reid (cervical vertebra) is already out for the season. RB Taylor Sundberg (45 carries, 282 yards, three TDs) has picked up the slack in his Riley's stead.
The News Tribune pick: Cougars stay in league title hunt and make it a four-way tie at 4-1 at the top.
Capital 27, Timberline 21

NON LEAGUE
No. 3 Lakes (6-0) at Lincoln (3-3)
7 p.m. Friday at Lincoln Bowl

The lowdown: The Lancers hold a one game lead over Peninsula in the SPSL 3A standings while the Abes are one game behind three schools fighting for a playoff spot out of the Narrows League.
Why the Lancers will win: When coach Dave Miller gets the opportunity to put a 4A school on the schedule, he takes it. Tonight marks the first of a two-year agreement against Lincoln. The Lancers are 4-0 against Narrows schools under Miller. Rushing offense keeps rolling along (248.8 ypg), led by RBs Willis Wilson (67 carries, 508 yards, five TDs) and Teddy Cotton (47 carries, 436 yards, five TDs), and backups Jordan Rivera and John Taufa aren't too bad, either.
Why the Abes will win: It's been hit or miss in coach Ben Cochran's first season, which can be expected. But Lincoln picked up in a big way in last week's 49-20 win over Wilson, amassing 328 rushing yards. RB Jordan Russell (78 carries, 655 yards, nine TDs) has been the team's big-play performer. They'll need a big effort from LBs Greg Coleman and Jackie Robinson, who returns tonight from pinched nerve, to slow Lakes down.
The News Tribune pick: Miller pleased with how his team is preparing, and performing in big games.
Lakes 38, Lincoln 24

SPSL NORTH
No. 9 Federal Way (5-1) at Kentwood (4-2)
7 p.m. Friday at French Field

The lowdown: Kentwood is 10-2 against the Eagles all-time, but hasn't won since a 41-0 thrashing in 1998. Federal Way defeated the Conks, 17-13, last season en route to capturing its first league title since 1976.
Why the Eagles will win: The return of RB Andre Barrington (58 carries, 431 yards, four TDs) has energized Federal Way on both sides, especially on defense. After holding Auburn Riverside to 132 total yards in last week's 21-0 win, the Eagles are now the SPSL leader in total defense (171.5 yards given up per game). The defensive line has had five sacks in the past two games, and LB Damon Hardy had three tackles for loss, including a pair of sacks against the Ravens.
Why the Conquerors will win: Grab an SPSL record book, and at the top of many lists is Kentwood – including league winning percentage (.739) since 1968. And yes, even though they're 3-2 in the SPSL North, they've won three in a row. Kentwood will try and test the middle of the Eagles' defense with RB Darrius Coleman (78 carries, 801 yards, eight TDs).
The News Tribune pick: As season winds down, expect Eagles to wind up passing attack – starting tonight against vulnerable Kentwood secondary.
Federal Way 27, Kentwood 19

No. 1 Skyline (6-0) at No. 2 Issaquah (6-0)
7 p.m. Friday at Issaquah High

The rare instance of having two top-ranked teams play during the regular season happens tonight. What does Issaquah have to contend with? QB Jake Heaps (58-of-101, 981 yards, 14 TDs) throwing to WR Gino Simone (15 catches, 359 yards, seven TDs), and a first-unit defense that hasn't given up any points. Last time the Eagles were in a similar position was in 2003 when, ranked No. 3, they beat No. 1 Bellevue, 24-21, on the road. A rash of injuries might be too much for Issaquah to overcome.
TNT pick: Skyline 26, Issaquah 20

The football state brackets were released earlier this week, so it's time to take a peek at how the brackets will look when they are finalized on Nov. 8.

I've gone through the rest of the regular season, predicting the outcomes of games and coming up with seedings for each league, to create a list of possible preliminary playoff matchups in 4A and 3A.

What teams will hoist the state championship trophy this season?

For example, in figuring out what teams would get the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds from Kingco 4A, I assumed that Skyline would win the Crest Division and Bothell would win the Crown Division and that the Spartans would beat the Cougars for the league title in Week 9, giving Skyline the No. 1 seed and Bothell the No. 2 seed. So, you can see this is absolutely not a scientific process, but neither are the polls and rankings we enjoy so much.

I suspect many of the matchups will hold true, but some obviously will not. Nevertheless, it's fun to speculate. Plus, I guarantee that high school coaches around the state are doing the same thing for games that their teams might be involved in.

These next four weeks are some of the most enjoyable, not to mention exhausting, of the year for those who cover prep sports. I'll update these possible matchups weekly, along with what teams have clinched postseason berths and what teams are coming close.

Click below for a peek at what the Week 10 preliminary playoff matchups might be.

Heading into Week 7, here are the rankings:

-- Woodinville and Graham-Kapowsin fell out of the 4A rankings, making room for Federal Way and Gig Harbor. The Eagles have looked awfully good lately and the Tides are playing as well as any team. They've probably been good enough to crack the top 10 before this week, but here they are now.

-- The biggest game in the state this week is in Issaquah, where the No. 2 Eagles host No. 1 Skyline. Did you know that Spartans coach Mat Taylor is an Issaquah graduate and former Issy coach? For what it's worth, Issaquah is also my alma mater, while my sister was a valedictorian in Skyline's first graduating class (1999).

-- North Kitsap beat Capital and has returned to the 3A rankings, replacing Meadowdale after the Mavericks lost.

Former Auburn Riverside girls basketball coach Adam Barrett has founded a club basketball team in Utah. His team is called the Utah Swoosh.

Barrett hosted a "showcase" on Saturday and about 70 girls, including five Auburn Riverside players, attended, The Deseret News reported.

Barrett, who coached the Ravens to back-to-back Class 3A state titles in 2007 and 2008, unexpectedly left the program this summer to pursue other coaching opportunities.

Looks like he found one.

I'm out at Curtis High School and it finally feels like fall has arrived. Last Friday was awfully soggy, but tonight is downright chilly. Wish I had a Thermos of something hot to keep me warm tonight.

Also, Puyallup playmaker Justin Veltung will not play tonight against Curtis. He injured his left foot last week against Spanaway Lake. My story today indicated that this was a possibility.

The TNT's Todd Milles will be in the office tonight, posting score updates on this blog throughout the evening. You can get the scores sent to your cell phone by signing up at Twitter. Do a search for "tntsports" and sign up to "follow" us to get the high school football score updates and big-play highlights texted directly to you.

We've got small, but loyal, following right now, and we'd love to keep you on top of the football happenings on Friday night.

NARROWS LEAGUE
Gig Harbor (4-1) at Foss (4-1)
7 p.m. today at Mount Tahoma Stadium

The lowdown: Gig Harbor is 2-0 in the series with these coaches on board, including a 45-19 victory last year in Purdy. The only city school Gig Harbor has lost to under coach Darren McKay is Wilson, 18-17 in 2006.
Why the Tides will win: This season is coming together nicely for the Tides, who shut out Peninsula, 33-0, in the Fish Bowl last week. McKay called it as complete a performance he's seen this season. The wear-and-tear of facing Gig Harbor's no-huddle offense takes its toll in the second quarter – the Tides have outscored opponents, 59-20. Since LB Dalton Darmody (knee) returned to the lineup against Central Kitsap, the Tides have given up only 20 total points.
Why the Falcons will win: The buzz for football has returned at Foss, which has game-breaking RB Julian Cruell (86 rushes, 507 yards, four TDs) and big-play QB Davante Peterson (46-of-84, 823 yards, 10 TDs) leading the way. The two things Foss has going for it in this matchup on defense is familiarity (Falcons also run the spread offense) and a defensive line (eight tackles for loss last week against Wilson) that gets pressure in the backfield.
The News Tribune pick: Foss is lacking depth and that does not bode well in facing a Tides offense that wears out teams with its fast tempo.
Gig Harbor 30, Foss 18

SPSL South
Puyallup (4-1) at Curtis (4-1)
7 p.m. today at Viking Field

The lowdown:
Curtis has only won once in this all-Vikings series since 2001 – a 28-21 victory when the two schools shared the SPSL South title in 2006. Puyallup won 26-14 last season.
Why the Vikings will win: He's caught four TD passes. He's run for another score. And last week, this speedy playmaker returned a kickoff (84 yards) and punt (75) for TDs. Any question that WR Justin Veltung, The News Tribune's reigning All-Area boys soccer player of the year, is as exciting as they come? QB Brennen Boyes (49-of-85, 883 yards, 12 TDs) still continues to give Puyallup balance.
Why Curtis will win: Rejuvenated rushing attack piled up 452 yards in last week's 67-0 win over Todd Beamer, and is led by RB Richard Southern (73 rushes, 572 yards, 11 TDs). Lineup is loaded with playmakers, espeically WR Stan Langlow (three TD receptions), who picked off a pass for a score against the Titans.
The News Tribune pick: A second divisional loss for either team would virtually eliminate them from SPSL South title hunt.
Puyallup 31, Curtis 30

SPSL 3A
Bonney Lake (4-1) at Peninsula (3-2)
7 p.m. today at Roy Anderson Field

The lowdown:
The schools' first meeting likely will determine not only the league's runner-up behind Lakes, but the winner would host at least one early 3A playoff game.
Why the Panthers will win: RB Aaron Quevedo (54 rushes, 474 yards, six TDs), the SPSL 3A rushing leader going into last week, sat out because of a hamstring injury. He'll serve as the No. 3 running back this week behind Mario Harris (124 yards, TD against White River) and Drew Foster (132 yards, two TDs). Injuries have forced carousel rotation at cornerback, but SS Colton Nash will be asked to do a lot defending Peninsula's passing attack.
Why the Seahawks will win: They were shell-shocked last week by Gig Harbor, and ultimately angry by the result. Coach Ross Filkins said his players were "hungry" to show the 33-0 loss was just an off-performance. QB J.R. Grosshans (47-of-79, 777 yards, four TDs) might take more chances this week, opening lanes for RBs Brandon James (73 rushes, 355 yards, 10 TDs) and J.D. Devaga (43 rushes, 327 yards, TD).
The News Tribune pick: The pressure is squarely on the Seahawks in a game they are favored to win at home.
Peninsula 19, Bonney Lake 17

NISQUALLY 1A/2B
Life Christian Academy (4-1) at Vashon (3-2)
7 p.m. today at Vashon Island Stadium

The lowdown:
Before this season, Vashon had dropped 39 of its past 41 games, including a 0-4 record against Life Christian. The Eagles won 46-7 in Lakewood last season.
Why the Eagles will win: A 68-27 loss two weeks ago to Orting prompted coach Todd Corrigan to call for more "live" work at practice on tackling and conditioning. Life Christian responded with a 33-0 over Chimacum. RB Morgan Cox (71 rushes, 598 yards, seven TDs; 11 total TDs) and QB Barrett Schmidtke (66-of-117, 1,291 yards, 13 TDs) will be asked to solve opportunistic Vashon defense.
Why the Pirates will win: You'd have to go back to the days of Jason Chorak in the 1990s for the last time the island was rocking with this kind of anticipation. DLs Nathan Betz, Kyle Martin and 6-foot-6 Michael Stoffer are doing their damage at key junctures of the fourth quarter for a young team that starts just three seniors. Betz (96 rushes, 444 yards, three TDs) is the team's leading rusher.
The News Tribune pick: Vashon is taking small steps for a program that has already collected its most wins in a season since 2003.
Life Christian 28, Vashon 14

No. 10 MARYSVILLE-PILCHUCK (5-0)
at LAKE STEVENS (4-1)
7 p.m. today at Lake Stevens

The Tomahawks celebrated 100 years of football last week in a victory over Arlington. This week, they replaced the Vikings as the No. 10 team in The News Tribune's ranking. Lake Stevens will air it out with QB Nick Baker (116-of-164, 1,575 yards, 18 TDs), and M-P will grind it out with RB Austin Denton (three 200-yard rushing games). Winner takes sole possessions of first in the WesCo 4A North.

TNT pick: Lake Stevens 31, Marysville-Pilchuck 27

The halfway point of the season is behind us.

We enter Week 6 with a handful of games that has distinct playoff implications:

-- Puyallup visits Curtis in a SPSL South showdown. A loss for either team will essentially knock them out of the league title race.

-- Fifth-ranked and undefeated Steilacoom hosts North Mason tonight. The Bulldogs' only loss was to Eastside Catholic, ranked No. 7 in 3A.

-- Bonney Lake and Peninsula are playing for second place in the SPSL 3A. Both teams have one league loss -- No. 3 Lakes beat them both.

-- In the Narrows League, Foss (4-1, 4-1) hosts Gig Harbor (3-1, 4-1) at Mount Tahoma Stadium. The Falcons' offense hasn't had much difficulty scoring, but neither has the Tides. A Foss win would be monumental for the Falcons' postseason hopes.

Now, let's get to the picks.

This week we welcome Tacoma golfing legend Ken Still. Ken played on the PGA Tour and Senior PGA Tour. He won three Tour events and played on America's Ryder Cup team in 1969.

For my sake, I hope Ken has spent his fall on the golf course and not reading up on prep football. I've got plenty of games to make up in the standings.

I've got some South Sound prep sports news and observations to pass on.

-- Auburn Riverside's Amanda Thompson has committed to play basketball at Cal State-Northridge. The 5-foot-9 guard chose the Matadors over Northern Arizona and Pepperdine, according to former Ravens head coach Adam Barrett.

-- Sumner lineman Grant Cisneros has received a scholarship offer from the University of Washington, Spartans coach Keith Ross said. Oregon and Washington State have also shown interest in the 6-foot-4, 280-pound senior.

-- Those three collegiate football programs are likely aware of Lakes freshman Zach Banner, too. At 6-foot-7 and 305 pounds, Banner has the frame to become an elite prospect. Banner hasn't cracked the starting lineup yet, but Lancers coach Dave Miller said he is impressed by the progression Banner has made.

-- Bellarmine Prep's girls soccer team edged Stadium, 2-1, on Tuesday. Here's our story. The Lions and Tigers are a half-game behind Olympia in the Narrows League standings, though Stadium beat the Bears 1-0 earlier this season and Bellarmine Prep visits Olympia next Tuesday.

-- North Mason's girls soccer team ended Olympic's league game winning streak on Thursday, winning 2-1. Abbey Marshall's goal four minutes into overtime lifted the Bulldogs (7-0-1) to the upset.

-- Across the water and up north, Bainbridge High School has eschewed the traditional homecoming dance -- complete with fancy gowns, limousines and big-dollar dinners -- to an informal dance in the gym with pizza, The Seattle Times reports. School officials say it's an attempt to get more kids involved and feel welcome. I think many people will enjoy the ease it puts on their wallets.

-- The WIAA has released its fall sports state allocations.

We are officially past the halfway point of the regular season. Some teams have only four games left before the postseason begins. The season is moving quickly.

There's a bit of a shakeup in the Class 4A rankings. Ferris fell two spots to No. 4 after committing six turnovers and edging Eastmont 21-12. Issaquah and Olympia each moved up one spot.

Here's my story from this game.

As the score shows, Lakes completely dominated this game. I expected the third-ranked Lancers to win, but this was a complete blindside. Sumner entered the game at 3-1 and on a three-game winning streak with wins over Franklin Pierce and Enumclaw, a team that Lakes struggled to beat, 14-7, last week.

All of that, I figured, added up to a decent SPSL 3A game.

That ended about halfway through the first quarter and by the end of the opening period Lakes led 42-0 and Sumner had committed four turnovers. The score was 63-0 at halftime.

You can read the story for the rest of the gory details.

Finally, I'm sure some people are going to see the score and assume Lakes ran it up. That was hardly the case.

Lakes' starters played one offensive and one defensive series in the second half. For the offense, it lasted one play -- Gervais connected with Kearse for an 11-yard touchdown pass. After that, the Lancers reserves played and tacked on two touchdowns. Lakes' fourth-string quarterback entered the game when the Lancers took over deep in Sumner territory after the Spartans turned the ball over for the eighth time with about five minutes left in the game. Lakes converted a first down before Miller called for his offense to take a knee.

I'd like to hear your opinions on lopsided scores. At what point should a coach "call off the dogs?" How does a coach balance getting his starters enough playing experience vs. keeping the score under control? And how much responsibility lies with the losing team?Washington has a 45-point mercy rule for 8-man football. Should the 11-man game have one, too?

We've got some good games this week.

There's the titanic matchup in the SPSL North, featuring Federal Way (3-1) and Tahoma (4-0). If the Bears win, their Week 8 showdown against Auburn will be huge. If you missed it, the No. 5 Trojans thumped Kentlake 34-3 on Thursday, improving to 5-0.

In the SPSL 3A, Sumner travels to Lakewood to take on No. 3 Lakes. The Lancers struggled to get past Enumclaw last week, eking out a 14-7 victory, and the Spartans have won three in a row.

You can find previews of tonight's top matchups here.

Olympia beat Lincoln, 48-7, Thursday, but the Bears' streak of holding opponents scoreless ended when the Abes scored late in the fourth quarter. Olympia's streak ended at 17 quarters.

The last team to score on Olympia was Gig Harbor, which led the Bears 7-6 at halftime of the Week 1 contest. The Tides, who lost 21-7 to Olympia, played well in that game and had it not been for a fumble inside Olympia's 10-yard line and the Bears converting two fourth downs into touchdowns, Gig Harbor might be undefeated.

Instead, the Tides are 3-1 after facing some of the best the Narrows League has to offer, beating South Kitsap, Central Kitsap and Bellarmine Prep. That's partly due to Gig Harbor's adoption of the spread offense, which reporter Todd Milles wrote about for today's newspaper.

This week also marks the halfway point of the regular season. What do you see happening in the second half? What teams will lock up playoff berths?

Let's get to the picks.

This week's guest picker is Mike Curto. Curto does some freelance work for The News Tribune and also is the Tacoma Rainiers radio play-by-play guy. But can he maintain the guest pickers' lead in the season-long picks contest?

We'll find out soon.

SPSL
Federal Way (3-1) at Tahoma (4-0)
7 p.m. Friday at Tahoma Stadium
The lowdown:
The Bears are off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 2006 – the tail end of a three-year stretch in which they lost just two league games. Federal Way won last year, 38-13.
Why the Eagles will win: They are 2-0 since RB Andre Barrington (26 rushes, 166 yards, two TDs) returned, and he hasn't even had a big game yet. What might be the most underrated aspect of this team is its special teams. LB Damon Hardy blocked one of the three punts for scores last week, and is a relentless pass rusher, and PK/P Kelyn Rowe, a Div. I soccer recruit, has the leg to control field position.
Why the Bears will win: They run the ball, they play defense and they don't hurt themselves with mistakes. Yes, they're boring – just the way coach Tony Davis likes them. Chris Marangon (32 rushes, 370 yards, six TDs; nine catches, 190 yards) is a big-play target for QB Heyden Johnson.
The News Tribune pick: Both teams started slow offensively last week in wins. That will not get it done in this titanic matchup.
Federal Way 24, Tahoma 18

SPSL 3A
Sumner (3-1) at No. 3 Lakes (4-0)
7 p.m. Friday at Harry E. Lang Stadium
The lowdown:
The Lancers have won four SPSL titles, the last coming in 1991. All of them were at the 4A level. The last time these two schools were in the same league was 1996.
Why the Spartans will win: Sumner will go right at Lakes with a power rushing attack, led by RBs Alex Griffith (64 rushes, 279 yards) and Cody Haavik (74 rushes, 248 yards, two TDs) to try and control the clock. "Four yards (a play), to us, is a success," coach Keith Ross said. WR Zeric Cage (11 catches, 154 yards, three TDs) is an emerging threat on the perimeter.
Why the Lancers will win: Last week's effort at Enumclaw was almost an anomaly – seven possessions (27 plays), five turnovers. Yet the Lancers still pulled out a win, 14-7. DTs Sione Potoae and Tuiasosopo Niusulu, both three-year starters, form the backbone of a rush defense that has allowed just 39.3 yards per game.
The News Tribune pick: Lakes is the class of the league, and gets a home game to rebound from close call.
Lakes 37, Sumner 20

NON-LEAGUE
Peninsula (3-1) at Gig Harbor (3-1)
7 p.m. Friday at Roy Anderson Field
The lowdown:
The Tides have won four of the past five “Fish Bowl” rivalry games, including a 35-7 victory last season. Peninsula's last win came in 2006. Gig Harbor holds a 15-13-1 edge all-time.
Why the Seahawks will win: Has it ever been this good on offense? No, said coach Ross Filkins. He has four running backs, led by Brandon James (61 rushes, 327 yards, league-high 10 TDs), who are patient behind an underrated line, and QB J.R. Grosshans (33-of-55, 657 yards, four TDs) is both heady and productive.
Why the Tides will win: If anyone doubted Gig Harbor could go toe-to-toe in a smash-mouth game at South Kitsap, glance at last week's score – a 23-13 Tides' win. QB Chet Thompson (39-of-75, 615 yards, five TDs; 382 rushing yards) has been sensational directing the team's spread offense during brutal early-season schedule.
The News Tribune pick: Lots of offense, led by two standout quarterbacks, should make this a fun one.
Gig Harbor 30, Peninsula 23

NISQUALLY OLYMPIC
No. 6 Steilacoom (4-0) at Fife (3-1)
7 p.m. Friday at William Vinson Field
The lowdown:
Fife has clinched the past two Nisqually 2A titles with wins over the Sentinels, and is riding a 11-game league winning streak, dating back to 2005 in the Seamount League.
Why the Sentinels will win: First off, opponents have to know where QB Greg Herd (14-of-34, 268 yards, three TDs; 556 rushing yards, 10 TDs) is at all times. He kills teams in open space. But Herd has help in RB Jesse Newhouse (38 rushes, 262 yards, TD) and FB Jordan Flynn (48 rushes, 258 yards, two TD). Rushing offense is averaging 318.3 ypg.
Why the Trojans will win: A bad season-opening loss to Cascade Christian is long behind as Fife has won three in a row. The Trojans will distribute the rushing workload among RBs Alex Rohrer (28 rushes, 277 yards, three TDs), Josh Porter (42 rushes, 210 yards, two TDs), and Mike Mulvaney (24 rushes, 178 yards, two TDs).
The News Tribune pick: In battle of wing-T offenses, Herd's individual heroics will be the difference in close game.
Steilacoom 27, Fife 21

State Game of the Week
No. 3 CUSICK (4-0) at No. 2 ALMIRA/COULEE-HARTLINE (4-0)
7 p.m. Friday at ACH

The defending 1B champion ACH’s big-play ability is worrisome (12 scoring plays of 40 or more yards), but what Cusick has accomplished on defense, led by NT Kevin Villegas, is mind-blowing: Two shutouts and minus-84 yards rushing. ACH has won 15 in a row since a loss to Odessa last season.
TNT pick: ACH 22, Cusick 19

Here are the Week 5 Associated Press high school football polls.

For a comparison, here are The News Tribune's Week 5 rankings that were released on Monday.

Class 4A
1, Skyline (8), 4-0, 80
2, Ferris, 4-0, 70
3, Issaquah, 4-0, 57
4, Auburn, 4-0, 50
5, Olympia, 4-0, 44
6, Woodinville, 4-0, 41
7, Central Valley, 4-0, 39
8, Southridge, 4-0, 18
9, Lake Stevens, 4-0, 14
10, Graham-Kapowsin, 4-0, 11
Others receiving 6 or more points: Marysville-Pilchuck 8.

The AP has the same top-10 teams as the TNT's poll. Looks like writers around the state are finally reaching some consensus on the top-10 teams in 4A.

Class 3A
1, Bellevue (8), 4-0, 89
2, Ferndale (1), 4-0, 82
3, Lakes, 4-0, 65
4, Union, 4-0, 62
5, West Seattle, 4-0, 55
6, Kennedy, 3-1, 46
7, O’Dea, 3-1, 31
8, Eastside Catholic, 3-1, 26
9, Meadowdale, 2-1, 13
10, East Valley (Spokane), 2-2, 7

Ferndale's 41-6 win last week over previously-ranked Lynden impressed someone. I have no idea who voted the Golden Eagles No. 1, but it wasn't Ferndale's hometown newspaper.

Class 2A
1, Prosser (7), 4-0, 88
2, Archbishop Murphy (1), 4-0, 77
3, Burlington-Edison (1), 4-0, 72
4, Tumwater, 4-0, 66
5, Othello, 3-1, 35
6, Steilacoom, 4-0, 33
7, Selah, 4-0, 32
8, Pullman, 2-2, 27
9, W. F. West, 3-1, 19
