The Prep Blog
The preps blog is designed to fill in the gaps of our high school sports coverage, providing insight into some of the stories and projects we are pursuing, and to serve as a forum to talk about some of the significant high school sports stories happening in our community.

Doug Pacey joined The News Tribune in 2007 after covering prep sports at The Bellingham Herald for five years. He graduated from Issaquah High School in 1998 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Kansas in 2002. E-mail Doug.

We've got some good games this week.

There's the titanic matchup in the SPSL North, featuring Federal Way (3-1) and Tahoma (4-0). If the Bears win, their Week 8 showdown against Auburn will be huge. If you missed it, the No. 5 Trojans thumped Kentlake 34-3 on Thursday, improving to 5-0.

In the SPSL 3A, Sumner travels to Lakewood to take on No. 3 Lakes. The Lancers struggled to get past Enumclaw last week, eking out a 14-7 victory, and the Spartans have won three in a row.

You can find previews of tonight's top matchups here.

Olympia beat Lincoln, 48-7, Thursday, but the Bears' streak of holding opponents scoreless ended when the Abes scored late in the fourth quarter. Olympia's streak ended at 17 quarters.

The last team to score on Olympia was Gig Harbor, which led the Bears 7-6 at halftime of the Week 1 contest. The Tides, who lost 21-7 to Olympia, played well in that game and had it not been for a fumble inside Olympia's 10-yard line and the Bears converting two fourth downs into touchdowns, Gig Harbor might be undefeated.

Instead, the Tides are 3-1 after facing some of the best the Narrows League has to offer, beating South Kitsap, Central Kitsap and Bellarmine Prep. That's partly due to Gig Harbor's adoption of the spread offense, which reporter Todd Milles wrote about for today's newspaper.

This week also marks the halfway point of the regular season. What do you see happening in the second half? What teams will lock up playoff berths?

Let's get to the picks.

This week's guest picker is Mike Curto. Curto does some freelance work for The News Tribune and also is the Tacoma Rainiers radio play-by-play guy. But can he maintain the guest pickers' lead in the season-long picks contest?

We'll find out soon.
