The Prep Blog
The preps blog is designed to fill in the gaps of our high school sports coverage, providing insight into some of the stories and projects we are pursuing, and to serve as a forum to talk about some of the significant high school sports stories happening in our community.

Doug Pacey joined The News Tribune in 2007 after covering prep sports at The Bellingham Herald for five years. He graduated from Issaquah High School in 1998 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Kansas in 2002. E-mail Doug.

Covering high school sports in Tacoma, Pierce County and the South Sound.

Here's my story from this game.

As the score shows, Lakes completely dominated this game. I expected the third-ranked Lancers to win, but this was a complete blindside. Sumner entered the game at 3-1 and on a three-game winning streak with wins over Franklin Pierce and Enumclaw, a team that Lakes struggled to beat, 14-7, last week.

All of that, I figured, added up to a decent SPSL 3A game.

That ended about halfway through the first quarter and by the end of the opening period Lakes led 42-0 and Sumner had committed four turnovers. The score was 63-0 at halftime.

You can read the story for the rest of the gory details.

Finally, I'm sure some people are going to see the score and assume Lakes ran it up. That was hardly the case.

Lakes' starters played one offensive and one defensive series in the second half. For the offense, it lasted one play -- Gervais connected with Kearse for an 11-yard touchdown pass. After that, the Lancers reserves played and tacked on two touchdowns. Lakes' fourth-string quarterback entered the game when the Lancers took over deep in Sumner territory after the Spartans turned the ball over for the eighth time with about five minutes left in the game. Lakes converted a first down before Miller called for his offense to take a knee.

I'd like to hear your opinions on lopsided scores. At what point should a coach "call off the dogs?" How does a coach balance getting his starters enough playing experience vs. keeping the score under control? And how much responsibility lies with the losing team?Washington has a 45-point mercy rule for 8-man football. Should the 11-man game have one, too?
