The Prep Blog
The preps blog is designed to fill in the gaps of our high school sports coverage, providing insight into some of the stories and projects we are pursuing, and to serve as a forum to talk about some of the significant high school sports stories happening in our community.

Doug Pacey joined The News Tribune in 2007 after covering prep sports at The Bellingham Herald for five years. He graduated from Issaquah High School in 1998 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Kansas in 2002. E-mail Doug.

The football state brackets were released earlier this week, so it's time to take a peek at how the brackets will look when they are finalized on Nov. 8.

I've gone through the rest of the regular season, predicting the outcomes of games and coming up with seedings for each league, to create a list of possible preliminary playoff matchups in 4A and 3A.

What teams will hoist the state championship trophy this season?

For example, in figuring out what teams would get the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds from Kingco 4A, I assumed that Skyline would win the Crest Division and Bothell would win the Crown Division and that the Spartans would beat the Cougars for the league title in Week 9, giving Skyline the No. 1 seed and Bothell the No. 2 seed. So, you can see this is absolutely not a scientific process, but neither are the polls and rankings we enjoy so much.

I suspect many of the matchups will hold true, but some obviously will not. Nevertheless, it's fun to speculate. Plus, I guarantee that high school coaches around the state are doing the same thing for games that their teams might be involved in.

These next four weeks are some of the most enjoyable, not to mention exhausting, of the year for those who cover prep sports. I'll update these possible matchups weekly, along with what teams have clinched postseason berths and what teams are coming close.

Click below for a peek at what the Week 10 preliminary playoff matchups might be.
