The Prep Blog
The preps blog is designed to fill in the gaps of our high school sports coverage, providing insight into some of the stories and projects we are pursuing, and to serve as a forum to talk about some of the significant high school sports stories happening in our community.

Doug Pacey joined The News Tribune in 2007 after covering prep sports at The Bellingham Herald for five years. He graduated from Issaquah High School in 1998 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Kansas in 2002. E-mail Doug.

With the rest of the winter sports behind us, we are free to throw all our efforts to baseketball for the next three weeks.

Here's a primer on the boys 4A and 3A district/regional tournaments around the state. I'm working on a look at the girls and it should be up Monday afternoon.

CLASS 4A

Northwest District
State berths:
Three
Clinched: Mariner (18-4), Mountlake Terrace (17-5)
Still dreaming: Jackson (14-9), Lake Stevens (18-4), Marysville-Pilchuck (14-7), Stanwood (16-6)
The lowdown: Mariner and Mountlake Terrace will play on Saturday for the district title and the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds to the state tournament. In the loser’s bracket games on Tuesday, Marysville plays Stanwood and Jackson faces Lake Stevens. The winners will meet on Friday for the No. 3 seed to state.

KingCo/Greater St. Helens tournament
State berths:
Four
Clinched: Garfield (19-3), Inglemoor (17-5)
Still dreaming: Bothell (10-12), Evergreen (Vacouver) (14-5), Heritage (12-10), Issaquah (13-9), Mountain View (11-9), Redmond (13-9), Roosevelt (12-10)
The lowdown: The KingCo and Greater St. Helens League have pooled their state berths in this bi-district tournament. But KingCo’s Crown and Crest division champions will get the top two seeds to state. Those seeds will be decided when Garfield plays Inglemoor in the league title game at 8:15 p.m. Friday at Juanita. There are two KingCo loser-out games on Tuesday: Redmond-Bothell and Issaquah-Roosevelt. The winners will play Thursday to determine their GSHL opponents in winner-to-state, loser-out games on Saturday. The winner of that KingCo game will host the No. 2 team from the GSHL, while the loser will travel to the GSHL’s top seed.
Who will those GSHL teams be? That is still to be determined. Heritage will play Evergreen in a loser-out game on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to meet Mountain View on Thursday for the league’s Nos. 1 and 2 seeds.

West Central District
State berths:
Six
Clinched: Curtis (18-5), Decatur (20-3), Federal Way (22-2), Foss (19-4)
Still dreaming: Beamer (12-11), Bellarmine Prep (14-10), Central Kitsap (16-8), Kentridge (15-8), Kentwood (18-6), Lincoln (16-8), Mount Tahoma (15-8), Rogers (15-8)
The lowdown: The semifinals are set. On Wednesday at Puyallup, Decatur will play Foss at 6 p.m. and then Curtis will take on Federal Way at 8 p.m. All four squads are state-bound, leaving eight other teams in the loser’s bracket vying for two spots. Kentwood is among the teams in the loser’s bracket and will play Lincoln at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Foss. Abdul Gaddy’s Bellarmine Prep must beat Central Kitsap at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Tahoma to stay alive.

Eastern Regional
State berths:
Three
Clinched: None
Still dreaming: Eisenhower (22-1), Wenatchee (15-9), Richland (14-9), Gonzaga Prep (20-2), Lewis and Clark (13-10), Pasco (16-8), Davis (10-14), Walla Walla (17-6)
The lowdown: The Eastern Regional tournament, comprising teams from the Greater Spokane League and CBBN, begins Tuesday. A week ago, Eisenhower and Gonzaga Prep were favorites to reach the regional title game and secure state berths. But then Walla Walla defeated Ike on Saturday for the district title and enters the regional with the CBBN’s top seed. That means if Ike and Gonzaga Prep each win on Tuesday, the Cadets and Bullpups will meet on Friday in a winner-to-state game and the other will be bounced to the loser’s bracket and must win two games to get the regional’s No. 3 seed.

Clinched: None
Still dreaming: Everett, Ferndale, Glacier Peak, Lynnwood, Meadowdale, Mount Vernon, Sedro-Woolley, Shorecrest
The lowdown: This Northwest Conference and WesCo tournament begins Wednesday. Meadowdale and Mount Vernon are the top seeds from their respective leagues.

West Central/Southwest Bi-District
State berths:
Seven
Clinched: None
Still dreaming: Clover Park (14-7), Enumclaw (20-1), Franklin Pierce (11-10), Lakes (15-6), Union (15-6), Columbia River (16-5), Camas (9-11), Renton (17-2), Mount Rainier (16-4), Kennedy (12-8), Foster (15-5), Evergreen (Seattle) (7-12), North Thurston (15-6), North Kitsap (16-4), Timberline (9-11), Bremerton (11-9), Olympic (10-10), Capital (15-6)
The lowdown: The SPSL, Greater St. Helens League and Olympic Western League all send teams to this 16-team tournament. You might have counted 18 teams listed in the “still dreaming” category. That’s because there are two OWL winner-to-district games that will be played on Tuesday – Timberline at Bremerton and Olympic at Capital.
