Abdul Gaddy and Joshua Smith, possibly the two best high school basketball players in the state, will not be at the Class 4A state tournament.
Gaddy's Bellarmine Prep Lions were eliminated, 78-68, by state tournament-newbie Beamer and Smith's Kentwood Conquerors fell to rival Kentridge, 51-41.
Gaddy, a senior, does have a pair of prestigious all-star games to look forward to in April -- the McDonald's All-American game and a couple weeks later the Nike Hoops Summit in Portland, Ore. After that, it's on to the University of Washington.
Smith will have another chance to get back to state -- he went as a freshman, but missed out last season, too. In the meantime, he'll likely spend time getting more familiar with any number of the universities and colleges courting him.
Smith told TNT reporter Todd Milles tonight that he has not committed to any school and that he is "wide open."
A boring, sloppy, slow-paced game started cookin' in the fourth quarter, and the Conquerors did their best to steal one at Auburn High. Kentridge won, 51-41.
Trailing by 11 with four minutes remaining, Kentwood went on a 7-0 run to cut it to 42-38 with 2:36 to go.
But the Chargers' guards would not let this one get away. Kentridge scored on four consecutive possessions, capped by Gary Bell's putback with 1:01 remaining, to give the team a 49-41 lead, and Kentwood missed its final four shots.
Kentridge earns the No. 4 seed from the WCD to the 4A state championships starting Wednesday.
The thud you heard all the way back in Tacoma was prized Kentwood High giant Joshua Smith hitting the floor a couple times in the third quarter.
The clank noise was his teammates missing a whole lot of shots.
Kentridge's guards have paved the way for a win that would send the Chargers to state. They lead 35-24 starting the fourth quarter at Auburn High.
Auburn Mountainview has a 21-20 lead over Port Angeles at halftime.
Jessica Madison has 9 points for Port Angeles, while Aalia Braboy leads the Lions with 6.
Excuse the tardiness on the updates from the Kent showdown as the post-game locker room session for Bellarmine Prep ran long.
Anyway, Kentwood is playing sloppy, and the Chargers' guards are taking control. Kentridge leads 33-20 with 3:32 remaining in the third quarter.
Jessalyn Clark scored 11 points and Jaynae Sayler had 10 as Enumclaw kept its season alive. The Hornets beat Mount Rainier 45-34 in the 3A WCD-SW girls bi-district tournament tonight.
Enumclaw will play the winner of Auburn Mountainview-Port Angeles on Friday at Clover Park.
In the end, it was too much of the Beamer High tandem of guard Napa Mefi (28 points) and post Kevin Davis (25 points), and the Titans are going to the Class 4A state tournament for the first time in their school history.
Beamer beat Bellarmine Prep in a winner-to-state, loser-out WCD game, 78-68, at Auburn High School, and will go as the No. 5 seed.
Lions senior Abdul Gaddy, headed to the University of Washington next fall, scored 24 (with seven rebounds, six assists, one steal and one blocked shot) in his final game, but fouled out with 32.4 seconds remaining.
Mefi was the spark plug, hitting five 3-pointers for the Titans, including three in the first 51/2 minutes of the third quarter to lead Beamer back from a deficit.
Davis was tremendous in the second half, too, scoring 14 points, including 10 in the final quarter.
A 12-0 run to start the fourth quarter has put the Beamer High Titans in the driver's seat in this winner-to-state 4A game at Auburn.
They lead Bellarmine Prep, 69-59, with 2:21 to go.
Enumclaw turned the ball over 10 times in the first quarter against the Mount Rainier 3/4-court trap and needed to score five points in the final 1:03 of the period to close to four points.
The pace has slowed. Beamer's Napa Mefi has warmed up in a loser-out, winner-to-state 4A WCD game at Auburn High.
Mefi, a 10th grader for the Titans, hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter, and Bellarmine star Abdul Gaddy had an uncharacteristic four turnovers as Beamer leads 52-49 at the end of threee quarters.
Mefi leads all scorers with 19.
Twice, Bellarmine Prep had leads of nine points, but consecutive 3-point baskets by Napa Mefi (two) and Chase Hildenbrandt (one) with less than two minutes to go has cut the Lions' lead at halftime to 37-33 at Auburn High School.
Kevin Davis, the Titans' 6-foot-8 post, scored seven of his team-high 11 points in the second quarter. Hildenbrandt has 10.
Lions star Abdul Gaddy has nine points, but was held scoreless for the final 71/2 minutes of the quarter. Younger brother, Donald, leads the team with 10.

Every Bellarmine Prep starter touched the ball. Every one scored.
But the Gaddy brothers, Abdul (seven points) and Donald (four), were the firepower as Bellarmine grabbed a 20-13 lead over Beamer at the end of the first quarter.
The Lions shot 57 percent from the floor (8-of-14)
Tough driving from Interstate-5 to get to Auburn High School for the Bellarmine Prep-Beamer winner-to-state, loser-out contest.
The gym is probably half full just before tipoff.
