The Prep Blog
The preps blog is designed to fill in the gaps of our high school sports coverage, providing insight into some of the stories and projects we are pursuing, and to serve as a forum to talk about some of the significant high school sports stories happening in our community.

Doug Pacey joined The News Tribune in 2007 after covering prep sports at The Bellingham Herald for five years. He graduated from Issaquah High School in 1998 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Kansas in 2002. E-mail Doug.

Boys
First Round

Bellevue Christian over Highland
Winlock over Brewster
Vashon over Ilwaco
Lake Roosevelt over Columbia Burbank
Chelan over Naches Valley
King’s over Kalama
Castle Rock over Seattle Academy
Port Townsend over Granger

The Winlock-Brewster and Port Townsend-Granger games were the hardest to make a decision about. I almost took Highland over Bellevue Christian, too.

Quarterfinals
Winlock over Bellevue Christian
Vashon over Lake Roosevelt
Chelan over King’s
Port Townsend over Castle Rock

Lake Roosevelt seems capable of scoring an upset here, but Vashon is just too tough. The biggest challenge for the Pirates, in my opinion, is them believing that they are a state championship-caliber team after the disappointing ends to their last few seasons. If Vashon has cleared the past out of the memory banks, then nothing should stop them.

Semifinals
Vashon over Winlock
Chelan over Port Townsend

Two really good semifinals here. Winlock is good enough to beat Vashon, but the Pirates will find a way.

Finals
Vashon over Chelan

Pirates beat them once already in the SunDome; that’s a big confidence builder.

Girls
First Round

Connell over Chelan
Onalaska over Vashon
Lynden Christian over Rainier
Granger over Cascade
Freeman over La Center
Columbia Burbank over Bellevue Christian
Zillah over King’s
Seattle Christian over Toledo

These picks are pretty straight-forward. Vashon might be able to upset Onalaska

Quarterfinals
Connell over Onalaska
Lynden Christian over Granger
Freeman over Columbia Burbank
Seattle Christian over Zillah

Zillah is definitely capable of toppling Seattle Christian. But Lynden Christian, Seattle Christian and Freeman have seemingly been playing at a level above everyone else all season that I’m sticking with those three.

Semifinals
Lynden Christian over Connell
Seattle Christian over Freeman

I can already hear the griping about an all-private school final.

Finals
Lynden Christian over Seattle Christian

LC coach Curt De Haan adds to his already-impressive state title haul.

Four straight days of state tournament basketball begins tomorrow. And The News Tribune's sports, photo and multi-media departments will be all over it.

Unless you're at the Tacoma Dome, you won't be able to feel like you're in the middle of the action anywhere else. If you do go to the games, you'll probably want to check out some of the following when you get home.

Here's what we'll be doing:

-- Posting in-game scoring updates and analysis right here on this blog.

-- Posting stories and box scores from EVERY game on this page.

-- Posting video interviews with players and coaches after games.

-- Posting interesting news and notes on this blog that we've gleaned.

-- TNT photographer Lui Kit Wong will add to this incredibly impressive photo gallery. How cool is it? It's one of the biggest attractions at our Web site.

-- TNT multi-media guru Joe Barrentine will be shooting video of the games and turning them into 30-second highlight clips with narration. We will post these clips right here on this blog.

It's going to be fun. See you at the dome.

If you want to stay up on the 1A state tournament, I encourage you to check out the Yakima Herald-Republic's site TourneyTown.com. They do a great job of posting scores and updates.
