The morning session of Day 2 at Star Track XXVII is complete. Selah’s Brett Blanshan smashed the 2A state meet record in the boys 100-meter dash with a blistering time of 10.67 seconds. The time is the fastest time in the state in the event, regardless of classification

4A meet recap

The finals of the boys 100-meter dash will look awfully familiar to those who were at last week’s West Central District meet. The top four qualifiers – Beamer’s Duran Ward, Federal Way’s Trenton Pinson, Puyallup’s Justin Veltung and Kentlake’s Zach Smith – are all from the West Central District. Ward turned in the fast time of the first heat, winning in 10.88 seconds and followed by Smith at 10.96. Veltung and Pinson tied for the lead in the second heat with identical times of 10.96.

Smith also won the triple jump with a leap of 48 feet, 1 inch. He’ll try to defend his title in the long jump on Saturday.

In the girls 100, Andrea Geubelle smoked the field, winning in 11.81 seconds. Issaquah’s Johanna Carr won the second heat with a time of 12.10 and Bellarmine Prep’s Kelly Jacka was second at 12.18. Geubelle is a heavy favorite to win the long jump tonight after claiming her second triple jump crown on Thursday.

Jefferson’s Kayla Adams edged Bethel’s Jackie Brown by the slimmest of margins in the girls shot put. Adams’ heave went 41 feet, 1 inch, while Brown’s was 41 feet.

There will be some fireworks in the evening session. The finals of the boys 110-meter and girls 100-meter hurdles will start at 6:45 p.m. Kentwood senior Steven Warner is the top seed in the boys race. Bellarmine Prep’s Shaquana Logan is the favorite in the girls’ race, but Emerald Ridge’s Kayla Stueckle is capable of winning, too. Stueckle and Logan won their heats in the morning session today.

Curtis’ Rahmel Dockery and A.J. Maricich will go head-to-head in the high jump tonight. The state's co-leaders have cleared 7 feet this season.

3A/2A recap

It didn't take long for Selah High's Brett Blanshan to make amends at Star Track XXVII, the state track and field championships.

A year after false-starting in his Class 2A boys' 100-meter preliminary heat on this same track at Mount Tahoma Stadium, the senior smashed the meet record to highlight the Friday morning session.

Blanshan blazed to a 2009 state-best 10.67 seconds in the mid-morning heat, eclipsing the old time of 10.96, set by Pullman's Cody Moore in 2003.

"Last year I got second in the 200, and false-started in the 100," he said. "Every practice, I've thought about both events, It's all been building to this. I want to win both events."

Later today, River Ridge High's Miles Coats will try and find rare air – the 50-foot barrier in the 2A boys triple jump. His 49-81/2 leads all Washington jumpers this season.

Coats warmed up for it by capturing another 2A crown, this time in the high jump. He won with a mark of 6-6.

"I was pretty carefree," he said, sitting under the athletes' awards tent, icing his shin. "But I am really excited about the triple jump."

Hazen's Andrey Levkiv might have carried the top 3A mark in the boys discus (174-6) into the championship today. But it was his Seamount League counterpart – Renton's Armin Basic – who walked away with gold, and the championship.

Basic's first throw of finals – 175-5 – was the winner over Peninsula's Darrien Creamer (153-6). Lefkiv was a distant sixth at 149-8.

"Once I got that good mark, I thought it wouldn't be beat," Basic said.

NOTES
Franklin Pierce's Germe Poston grabbed the No. 1 time in the 3A girls 100 (11.87). She was the only girl in the field to go under 12 seconds. Union High's Kinsley Ojukwu is tops at 10.72. … Toppenish's Anthony Galaviz won the 2A boys javelin title at 182-6. The Lakewood High pair of Cameron Hess (177-1) and Payden Butler (175-4), followed right behind him. … Blaine's Robin Taylor won the 2A girls pole vault at 11-0 - six inches off her No. 3 mark in state at 11-6.

A little more than an hour into Day 2 of Star Track XXVII and a meet record has already fallen.

Selah's Brett Blanshan shattered the 2A meet record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.67 seconds. Blanshan's time is the fastest in the state this season, regardless of classificaiton. The previous record was 10.96 seconds, set by Pullman's Cody Moore in 2003.

In the 4A boys 100, the top four qualifiers are all from the West Central District.

In the only completed final of the day -- so far -- Kayla Adams of Jefferson won the 4A girls shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 1 inch. Bethel's Jackie Brown was second at 41 feet.

The second day of Star Track XXVII is here and, again, so is the sun. Couldn't ask for better weather than this.

TNT sports reporter Todd Milles and myself are going to tackle the three-classification state track and field meet today. We're going to try and post as many updates to the blog as we can. With so many events going on one after another and us trying to interview athletes and coaches, we can't promise instant updates of events. But if records fall, we'll get something up. One tip about parking. The spectator parking lot at Mount Tahoma High School -- the is a meet officials lot this is almost empty, however -- was filled by 10 a.m. The only parking remaining is on the field south of the tennis courts off Verde Street.
