Star Track XXVII is in the books. The state track and field meet's return to Tacoma went off without hitch. But there was plenty of buzzing -- from some incredible performances and the wasps that thought the clerk's tent in the infield was a good place to build a hive.
The best moments of the meet? Here's a short list off the top of my head:
-- Bellarmine Prep senior Shaquana Logan's jubilant reaction after winning the 4A girls 100-meter hurdles.
-- Beamer senior Duran Ward leaning at the finish line to edge Federal Way junior Trenton Pinson. Ward won by two-thousandths of a second, 10.802 to 10.804. It was an incredible race.
-- Franklin Pierce junior Germe Poston totally dominating the field in the 100 and 200 meter sprints. No one came close to her at all. I'm looking forward to see what she can do as a senior next year.
-- Selah sprinter Brett Blanshan astonishing the crowd and other athletes with his blistering time of 10.60 seconds in the 2A 100 and passing runners on the anchor leg of Selah's 4x100 relay. Blanshan and his relay mates donned T-shirts after their victory that read "Amazin' Blazin' Caucasian."
-- Blaine freshman Cherish Morrison won four events -- 100, 200, 400 and 4x200 -- and a 2A team championship with the Borderites.
Here are some more detailed accounts of the last day of the state meet.
Here is my story on 4A and here is Todd Milles' story on the 3A and 2A meets.
Meet officials estimated that the paid attendance for the three-day was meet was around 14,000. An exact figure will be available early next week.
