Games in the South Sound were postponed again because of overnight snow that blanketed the Puget Sound region.
Dave Lutes, Kent School District athletic director, said SPSL league coaches will meet on Thursday to finalize a make-up schedule for the missed games.
The Tacoma School District and Peninsula School District closed schools on Tuesday, so Narrows League games scheduled for Wednesday will be at the hands of Mother Nature on whether or not they will be played. I'll have an update later in the day once I find out more.
With schools closed or on emergency schedules throughout the South Sound, most high school games have been cancelled for Friday. Administrators for the South Puget Sound League and Narrows League say they will begin plans to reschedule games early next week.
With most of the schools closed again today because of a new sheet of snow that hit the Puget Sound region, Thursday's slate of games also have been cancelled. I'll make some calls and try to find out what's going to happen with Friday's games.
Several SPSL games scheduled for today (Tuesday) have been rescheduled for Wednesday. Those games include the Kentridge vs. Jefferson boys and girls games, and the Todd Beamer vs. Puyallup boys and girls games. The Kentlake vs. Federal Way boys and girls games, and the Decatur vs. Kent-Meridian boys and girls games also were postponed, and will be rescheduled to a later date.
As for the SPSL games missed on Friday, Dec. 15, most of those games will be rescheduled to Jan. 6th, unless there is a facility conflict.
Mount Tahoma boys and girls basketball games against Garfield on Saturday have been cancelled. It's uncertain if the two games will be rescheduled for later in the year.
Strong winds that whipped through the Puget Sound region Thursday night and early Friday morning resulted in the postponement of several high school athletic events planned for Friday.
Basketball games and other athletic events scheduled for the Narrows, South Puget Sound, Western Cascade, Nisqually and Olympic leagues were cancelled and will be rescheduled for later in the year.
Games scheduled for Saturday in the Puget Sound region will go on as scheduled, depending on the individual facility’s ability to handle the event.
Jennifer Kubista, Tacoma school district athletic director, said four of Tacoma’s five comprehensive high schools were without power on Friday, with Stadium the only one of those schools that did not lose power.
She expects a wrestling tournament at Foss, the Judy Emery Invitational, and other events scheduled for Saturday to go on as planned if power is restored at the respective, host facilities.
“As long as schools have power I think people will try to get the activities going,” she said.
Kubista said athletic directors within the district will work to reschedule the missed games on Friday for sometime within the next few weeks.
Ed Ploof, Bellarmine Prep athletic director, said all Lions games were cancelled for Friday, but that school athletic events on Saturday should go on as planned.
Dave Lutes, Kent School District athletic director, said all of the high schools there lost power during the storm, and the full SPSL schedule of games were cancelled for Friday. Those games will be rescheduled for later in the season, Lutes said.
As for events on Saturday, Lutes said if facilities have power there’s no reason the kids can’t play, so a decision to hold athletic events will be made on a site specific basis.
