As one of our readers pointed out, and as we confirmed, Gerry Austin is scheduled to serve as referee for the Seattle-Chicago divisional playoff game Sunday at Soldier Field. By our records, Austin had the NFL's highest overall replay-reversal rate (.625) during the 2006 regular season (he worked 15 games). His crew also assessed 39 additional penalties against road teams, the highest differential among referees during the 2006 regular season. Austin worked Seattle's 24-22 home victory over the Rams. Road coaches are 6-2 in replay challenges against Austin this season. Home coaches are 2-3. Gene Steratore is the alternate referee, by the way.

The picture at the top is great.

So is the yellow line on the field (1st dwn.) really that bright?
bnemhaus @ 21:37 - Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

PhilKenSebben @ 22:49 - Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

kidding..

but i love it, it's about tim we got a nice banner.
hawktalk @ 00:03 - Thursday, January 11th, 2007
That yellow you see is the penalty flag flyin across the frame for Gray holding.

Mike,

Don't mean to bring up old stuff, but has Bill Leavy been conspicuously absent this year from nationally televised games? I have DirecTV and very rarely did I notice him doing any of the games I was watching (and I would look for him). I saw him once or twice in games that did not have real marquee value. It seems as if the NFL has tried to "hide" him this year. I wonder why? :)

How ironic it was Dale Hamer who over turned the crucial first down call against Dallas. I beleive it was this same Dale Hamner who ran from the endzone to take an interception away from Fredd Young and posssible Super Bowl run away from Steve Largent and the boys at the Astrodome in January 1988. A call that over ruled an official who was much closer to the play and was then up held by then replay official Tony Vetieri.

I believe Krieg lead the two minute offense on a drive at the end of regulation completing every pass of consequence to Steve Largent.

I also seem to recallthat the Seahawks started slowly that season but finished strong and took that momentum into the playoffs with them.

Maybe now I can let it all go.

pbis3,

I remember that game all too well. If I remember correctly, that was one of Bosworth's better games as a Seahawk. Krieg led a perfect two minute drive to tie the score and Young definitely had that ball under his hands.

The year before you will remember they beat Denver in the Dome something like 41-16 on the last Sunday of the season but didn't make the playoffs because fo a tiebreaker. That year the Hawks had beaten both Super Bowl participants(Giants and Broncos), and I believe had they made the playoffs that year they could have won the SB.

flahawker,

You are absolutely correct.

The year before the NY Jets went 10-6 as did Seattle.

The Jets won their first 10 gamesa and lost their last 6. Unfortuneately their 10th and final win was against Seattle, thus they held the tie breaker.

I think Seattle won 4 or 5 of their last 6 games that season.
It is good to see others harbor these same painful memories.
bdfools @ 13:41 - Thursday, January 11th, 2007
And was that Jets win over the Seahawks the Vinny Testeverde game? You know, the one where the refs mistook his helmet for the ball, and gave him the TD despite the ball being down around the 1?

Ahhh, the memories.
nighthawk2 @ 14:03 - Thursday, January 11th, 2007
No, that Jets "win", thanks to Phil Luckett mistaking a white football helmet for a brown football, was in 1998 under Dennis Erickson.

Couldn't whoever put the picture/banner at the top put a real football player up there? Like Rocky Bernard or Walter Jones, or even D.J. Hackett? Anyone but number 37? Or was that done just to tick me off?
SupaFreak @ 14:24 - Thursday, January 11th, 2007
EPGD2 (nighthawk2)... it was done just to tick your unreasonable @ss off! ;-)

I may have been mistaken I seem to remember the official who made the horrendous call in 1988 as Dale HamNer with an "N".

It seems the gentleman who saved the Seahawks with the call corrrection on Saturday was Dale Hamer notice no "N"

Perphaps through the almost 20 years of aggravation I made a mistake.

I am not sure but I think Hamner and Hamer are two different people.

Maybe I was too anxious to forgive.

Can anyone clear this up for sure?

The ref in the Dallas game also had a bad record re home teams. But that turned out well, despite their miffed call on 4th and 1 overturned by the booth.

Cowboys still had a chance to win the game, and the booth saw convincing evidence that he did not reach the 1st down marker.
Other than that call, during the Dallas game, I did not see them make any other mistakes that the booth or a challenge did not correct.

Certainly, you must think that the refs are being a bit more cautious with the hawks this season with respect to calls.
And yes, I had this question for Mike, where is Levy?

Was he just shoved to the background on purpose or is it coincidence that we havent seen much of him this year?
