A logical question: Why would the Seahawks release Kelly Herndon after he passed a physical? NFL rules allow teams to release healthy players at any time. Healthy players who are released do not receive non-guaranteed bonuses or salaries. Injured players can file grievances when released, sometimes winning injury settlements (a portion of the player's salary). For example, Rashad Moore settled for nearly $90,000 after his release a couple years back. Herndon had been rehabbing from an ankle injury. The Hawks waited until he was healthy enough to pass a physical before letting him go. Otherwise, Herndon might have been able to settle for a portion of his scheduled salary for 2007 ($2.5 million). This way, he gets none of it.

Another tidbit on the timing of the Herndon move: Seattle opens minicamp Monday. Putting Herndon on the field then would expose him to injury. Sometimes you'll see a team release a player just before a minicamp, for that reason. ...
