WR D.J. Hackett suffered a high ankle sprain, according to Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren, and is going to be out for a significant period. Holmgren was not specific about the amount of time Hackett would miss but it sounds like it is at least a month, perhaps longer.

Ben Obomanu is ready to play and should practice on Wednesday and should step in to take the place of Hackett. Holmgren said Obomanu would have gotten a lot of reps in Sunday's game if he was healthy.

Holmgren also brought up the possibility of Seneca Wallace playing WR in a pinch, a fairly strong indication they are going to sign a third QB. He said Jim Zorn has a pretty good feel for who is out there and available and if the signs somebody they will just sign him not bring anybody in for a bunch of workouts. Ken Dorsey was in last week, remember.

There was a bunch of other stuff Holmgren discussed which I will cover throughout the afternoon but I wanted to get Hackett's injury up ASAP.

So...can someone call ESPN now and tell Trey Wingo how to pronounce Obomanu before he hacks it up again? :P

I got the feeling Holmgren was joking when he mentioned using "ace-in-the-hole Seneca Wallace".

Thanks for the promptness (if that's even a word) on this injury --- even if it wasn't good news.

Thanks, Frank. Hackett's like a thoroughbred ...moves well, but breaks down easily. I have a feeling that Obomanu and Courtney Taylor will be heard from...

I watched this press conference online. It actually worked out really well. I was surprised. It was available through www.seahawks.com

As long as we know when the conferences are, I'd imagine that most of them would be available on this site.

As for the Wallace stuff, he may have been joking about Seneca, but then when a follow-up question was asked during this topic, Mike was serious. He said that they wouldn't run him out there as long as they had only two QB's, but with a third QB on the roster, it'd be something they would consider. He also said that they probably won't bring in any other players for "tryouts" because they have a good feel for who is out there (specifically referring to "Jim" who probably is Zorn). So a signing will happen when it happens....who knows when that'll be.

I found it interesting that they had all seven LB's activated for this game against TB. But only four WR's. Tells you something about the gameplan, eh? I imagine in games in which they "need to score more points to win" that they'd have more WR's active.

And I have a feeling that Hackett's long term prognosis in Seattle is questionable. He just gets hurt too much, and we know Ruskell's philosophy on that (save one Pork Chop).

Word out of NY implies that Eli may be out for a month. Nothing definite yet, although Mort Anderson seems certain it's true. If so, that may throw a monkey-wrench in our works for finding a qualified backup QB.

Shocking, DJ hackett hurt. Imagine that. So Obamanu is going to play ahead of Burleson? Is that what Holmgren said? Does Holmgren hate Burleson or something? I dont get it. He has the most playmaking ability on the offense besides Seneca.
Frank Hughes @ 15:33 - Monday, September 10th, 2007 Email
swab, I don't think that was what he was saying. I think though as a fourth WR Obomanu will get time. Burleson was being considered for the start on Sunday so it is likely he will start now with Obomanu getting a bunch of playing time. One thing Holmgren pointed out was that he used Ben Joppru as a fourth WR on Sunday and he acknowledged that didn't work out so well.

Must stink to be DJ right about now. The team tenders him for the one year. They couldn't come to an agreement on a LTD likely because Hackett's agent was seeking starter's pay and the team wanted to see how he held up as an every down starter. One game.

For those that were chastizing the team for not locking him up long term, seems like Ruskell might just know what he's doing in regards to these things.

If Hackett misses more than half the season (possible with a high ankle sprain) than he'll come much cheaper next year if the team chooses to keep him at all. Disappointing though. I was looking forward to seeing the kid blosom into something special.
foobar @ 15:47 - Monday, September 10th, 2007
Of course he also used MoMo as a 4th wide-out and we all saw how that worked out.

I was pretty shocked when they tried that flea flicker - Holmgren has never been much of a trick-play coach. I bet we don't see that play ever again.
Kerney @ 15:49 - Monday, September 10th, 2007 Email
Time to add Burleson to the Fantasy Team
Regis @ 16:05 - Monday, September 10th, 2007 Email
Holmgren pointed out the last time they tried that was against Detroit in 99. It didn't work then either and Kitna ended up being intercepted. I suspect Holmgren will find a way to put a (successful) trick play somewhere in there this season...whether it's a flea-flicker again remains to be seen.
ochawk @ 16:12 - Monday, September 10th, 2007 Email
Every successful team on occasion employs trick plays. At very least it keeps defenses guessing. The play might have been successful if Walter hadn't fallen asleep on the play. He was soley responsible for its failure.

Regis - I don't think the Giant's situation will affect the Seahawks.

The G-men will be fishing for a starter, like Byron "Fat Albert" Lefwich where the Seahawks will be looking for someone who will be happy riding the pine, like Rattay or Dorsey.

Granted, Rattay and Dorsey would probably prefer to get a starting gig in NY, but I don't think Tom Coughlin is going to bet his job on either ofthem two.
ballgame @ 16:24 - Monday, September 10th, 2007 Email
There are reports out of Cleveland that they are trying to sign Dorsey, As he seemed to work very well with Quinn this preseason helping him learn the system.

How long have we heard and read that Wallace is maybe the best play-maker on the team? If that's true, we're really wasting that talent. He's just not *that* good of a QB to keep him there. Go get a veteran...or 2...and get the play-makers on the field.

It would be a real shame if Seneca spends his career as a backup QB and never consistently utilizes on the field the talent that he has.
buddhabrad @ 16:52 - Monday, September 10th, 2007
As injuries go, this is the place to have one. Two weeks ago, we were complaining about the tough calls regarding the roster cuts. They are sorting themselves out.

I look forward to watching "The Vanilla Gorilla" QBing the Giants for the next month. Coughlin is gonna have a coronary. Too bad we don't play them this year. Can you imagine our D teeing off on such a slow-moving target?

"There are reports out of Cleveland that they are trying to sign Dorsey, As he seemed to work very well with Quinn this preseason helping him learn the system."

Which QB would they cut? I bet the Hawks would gibe Fry or Anderson a look.

Too bad about Hackett...lets hope Nate or Obomanu is up to the task. Lets hope Deion Branch can manage to actually catch a pass or two too, jeeze
antediluvian @ 17:47 - Monday, September 10th, 2007 Email
C'mon Ruskell....just sign Zorn to the league minimum as the 3rd string QB. After all he knows the system. ;-)
SharkHawk @ 19:58 - Monday, September 10th, 2007 Email
Hackett's injury looked pretty bad on the slo-mo replay on TV. Let's hope he comes back from this one. He has seemed to have lots of ankle/leg/foot problems. That's one thing a receiver can't afford to deal with on a regular basis.
blackhalobender @ 07:14 - Tuesday, September 11th, 2007
buddhabrad - he's actually got pretty good feet. That's one of the amazing things about him. He also has one of the biggest arms in the NFL. I'm a huge J-Load fan so one more fact: Dispite having had 4 different coaches in college in as many years, he has more college passing yards then Eli in the same conference at the same time.
