Have been out of pocket most of the day and dictating stuff to our editor, Dale Phelps, as it has become available. I finally got in front of a computer after we had a teleconference with Tim Ruskell. But the highlights are as follows:

-- Ruskell said this deal for Charlie Frye came together quickly. They had targeted him earlier but the talks had fallen off once Frye won the starting job in Cleveland. Once he had the poor performance on Sunday, the talks were revived and the Seahawks, according to Ruskell, felt like Frye was the best guy available to fill the third QB role that they obviously needed. He also said this is more of a long-term deal not meant to have an immediate impact.

-- No, this had nothing to do with the DJ Hackett injury and it is very unlikely that Seneca Wallace will be used as a WR in Sunday's game. This was something they had been pursuing for some time and probably would have been even if Hackett had remained healthy.

[More:]

-- The pick that the Seahawks gave to Cleveland was comparable to the one they got for Bryce Fisher. I have heard unofficially that it was a sixth-round pick but Ruskell declined to confirm that.

-- The development of rookies Baraka Atkins and Brandon Mebane led the Seahawks to believe that Fisher was expendable. Ruskell said Fisher never came to him and demanded a trade or expressed displeasure with his reduced role and that he was profressiona throughout. Ruskell would not say what role he thought Jason Babin would have in this so I get the impression that Atkins is ahead of him on the depth chart even though both were inactive on Sunday.

-- Ruskell said to never close the door on any discussions regarding other potential trades or free agent signings, but he said he felt that unless something scintillating presented itself they were pretty set with the roster at this point.

This is good info. I think they got great value from Cleveland. The Browns are panicking and desperate and the Hawks got a potential long-term QB replacement for Hasselbeck for almost nothing. He has two years or so to learn in one of the best QB systems taking the pressure off a guy thrown into an unfair system in Cleveland. If it doesn't work out nothing much lost. Good GMs target players with a lot of upside being dealt cheaply by desperate teams.

Ruskell is starting to look like a fantasy football owner!

Don't get used to this, Frank - it's not generally like this.. there are no 3 way trades or sign and trades in the NFL, as you can see by a veteran DE (or a starting team-leading WR) only netting second day picks.. But for the NFL, it is very rare to see this much action (on a winning team) after the first week of this season, and on the same day no less..

I did like the "been out of the pocket" reference.. Nice..

And for the record, snydro22 is a character, not necessarily myself or my true feelings, not about everything. Snydro22 was very hard on Sando from day one, but always came back and it was always in jest.. Snydro22 also speaks in third person and packs heat.. It's a little late in his life for change, so it is what it is..

Great news. I hate having only 2 QBs on the roster. Frye will have a chance to develop here with an actual O-line and QB system.

Both moves are good. I liked Fish but his time here was up, so we got some value for him and basically turned around and used the value to get Frye. Good moves....I hope this does open the door to get Seneca on the field more.

the best thing about that interview was ruskell saying he's good for now. the team could use a few weeks to gel and let the recent moves percolate through the depth chart.

I think that sometimes sports fans in general and Seahawks fans in particular have collective amnesia. We swapped a first round pick for a guy who had 29 regular season pass attempts to his credit and the moniker of "Mr. August". Initially things didn't look so well as he struggled in his first season with the Seahawks, throwing more interceptions than touchdown passes. I think we all know who I'm referencing here and I'd like to think that the trade worked out in our favor AFTER having time to learn Holmgren's system. Give the kid a chance. As other posters have noted, he was competing against NFL teams last year and last week behind a JV line with a JV team. Give it a chance. A 6th round choice, if that is accurate, isn't much for an opportunity at an heir or at least a serviceable back up.

Frye is a good choice for sure. I can''t wait to see what our offense does with Wallace now.
I will miss Fisher but I thought it was cool that instead of cutting him they dealt him to the Titans. A very smart move this time since we get a draft pick out of it. Good move Ruskell!

I agree, DHHENSLER... a diamond in the rough????? Perhaps! I know the Browns fans feel we got the short end of the deal and are laughing their asses off on many sites, but you know.... time will tell. Proven or not, Frye is better than the nothing we had yesterday! Under Holmgren an Zorn, he will have a sincere chance to improve and perform for our collective benefit.

What makes you think picking up a third qb means Seneca is suddenly going to see the field.

For that to happen, we need a No. 2 QB.

We've had a project at No. 3 for years and Seneca's played receiver on two plays.

Seneca is not going to see the field, for people to jump to that conclusion is ridiculous.

Ben Obomanu will be No. 4 and Taylor No. 5.

Bottom line. Case closed.

I'm sure they didn't re-sign Wallace to that contract to have him rot on the bench. Depending on how fast Frye picks up the offense, I'm sure we won't see much of Wallace at WR for now. The receiving corp is pretty deep. I'd like to hear Holmgren's comment on Frye. If he's the one that wanted him, then you have to trust his decision.

Ok, Phelps! Time to show your sweet headline writing skills on tomorrow's story about the trades!
Fish-er....Frye.... There's a lot to work with here... It's a hanging curve ball. No pressure. :)

RE Ruskell: Love him or hate him, you can't say that he isn't working his tail off. (Insert Bob Ferguson joke here.) In the past 2-3 years, has any team made more trades than the Hawks?

Like anyone in Cleveland would know a decent QB if they saw one. They are still pining away for the Brian Sipe days.

Snydro- get off the cough syrup...

"If he's the one who wanted him"
For the Seahawks, Ruskell can screw with the D all he wants. But when it comes to the well-oiled machine that is the Offense, you know for sure that Holmgren has to give the A-Ok. Especially for the QB position where Holmgren has one of the finest eyes on earth for horse flesh.

You can be sure that Holmgren was in on this one.

After drafting David Greene, I dont trust Tim Ruskell's evaluation of QB's. I hope to god he is not in charge of finding our next long term QB to replace Hasselbeck, it had better not be Frye. The only way this move helps the team this year if it gets Seneca on the field. Doubtful.
Permalink Comment by GK @ 19:12 - Tuesday, September 11th, 2007 Email
Unfortunately for all of the worshipers of Holmgren's fine eye for talent, you might recall that most of the roster has been re-done after Ruskell came on board. Greene was also a Holmgren pick. Holmgren is good at developing players, not picking them. Hasselbeck was an Andy Reid pick, not a Holmgren pick also by the way.

Frye is probably better than some teams starting QBs. I won't mention names but, they did cut Dorsey and then got him back AFTER this trade. Just for an example. At a time, when a lot of teams are scrambling for a 1st string QB that they can count on, we signed Seneca (who is better than those teams starters. There are a few teams, like Oak, Clev, etc, that don't even know which QB on their roster is the starter (proven already). If you read Fryes bio about his accuracy, mobility, arm, and his 6'4 height, with the records he has set, even if in a smaller school, you will realize that this kid has a LOT of potential. Damn, glad to get him and under the tutelage of Zorn, Holms and the advice of Hass and Seneca, he will learn this system and maybe Hass will be the next QB to leave, with Frye taking over. LOL You never know. This kid is good.
Oh, Cleveland doesn't know a QB when they see one???? Do they know a good Oline, or DB or WR when they see one? I don't think so, I think they few good players they have they lucked into.
I also heard we got a 4th round draft choice for Fisher...this was supposedly told by Mora to 'To the point' or whatever the name of that show is on NFL.com. We will see, and lets hope that this part is true too. I can't find it, but, a couple of people have mentioned that they heard it on different site, and blogs

Frye is an upgrade on Green, that's a positive. He can certainly learn and grow better in the Hawks camp than in Cleveland. Look at our personnel compared to theirs. This is a plus as well. Good move on paper, however time will tell. Sad to see Bryce go. Saving on salary cap was a non issue I believe it was more of a youth movement. Babin is 3 to 4 years younger I think, and in Football years that is big. All is speculation at this point but I like it that the Hawks are busy tryin to get all the right pieces in place

All of this "develop the QB" stuff is moot unless Holmgren extends his contract... unless I missed something and that already happened. I expect he'll retire his wife has mad charity skills and he seems to want to help her now. Although bringing in the big fat paycheck probably helps with that. :-)

Seneca better than some teams #1? Heck, I'd take almost every #2 QB in the NFL over our second string "quarterback" and there's a lot of bad ones out there.

DE Fisher. Duh, that was a no brainer! :)

dhhensler, MH was called "Mr. August" because the guy absolutely lit it up in the preseason. There was obviously talent there. Charlie Frye has shown no such production. Apparently none of you have the NFL ticket because all you'd have to do is see ONE Browns game to know that he sucks. I know, I know, offensive line this and Holmgren tutelage that. Our team can always fix it right? The credit being extended to Frye is the same rational being used to justify not signing Jimmy Kennedy.

Don't get me wrong, I like all of the optimism being expressed. But, this is a bad move, the guy sucks. WE would have been better off signing Dorsey and not the Browns.

A little side note that people might wanna read. This comes from the Scouts Insider ESPN:

"The return game was a non-factor for the Seattle special teams last week with an unimpressive performance by Nate Burleson, and young punter Ryan Plackemeier needs to develop more consistency.

Arizona special teams coach Kevin Spencer will rely on punt returner Steve Breaston and kickoff returner Marcel Shipp to create positive field position for the offense. Cardinals WR Sean Morey is a special teams demon and should contribute on all phases. Punter Mike Barr has been with Spencer during the preseason over the last couple of seasons and will make his second NFL start this season"

Unreal! They're right Burleson's 53yrd punt return had no effect in setting up the first TD.

This seems like a lot of press etc... for a #3 QB. How many people can even name all/any of the #3's in for instance Seattle's division without looking it up somewhere? We're talking about a guy who's going to be running the scout team and carrying a clipboard on Sundays. True, he may develop into something, but then again maybe not. How many # 3's have come and gone?

Just a reminder the trade for Hass involved a bit more than swapping picks. In the trade ...

Seattle gave up the 10th pick(1st round, GB selected Jamal Reynolds-DE), and the 72nd pick(3rd round, GB selected Torrance Marshall-MLB)

Green Bay gave up the 17th pick(1st round, Sea selected Steve Hutchinson-G), the 222nd pick(7th round, Sea selected Dennis Norman-C), and Hasslebeck.

If you'll remember it wasn't a big deal to switch 1st rounders, because we had the 7th pick from Dallas (which was later traded to San Fran for the 9th pick, Koren Robinson) as part of the the Joey Galloway compensation.

Ultimately Hasselbeck meant swapping a 3rd for a 7th.

How can some people be so ignorant?

Without Seneca at backup last year the Hawks would not have made the playoffs.

See what happened to DJ Hacket? One play and he is out. We can not afford to lose Seneca to injury by using him as a receiver.

It takes years to learn Holmgrens system. Every team needs a good backup QB, and Seneca is that guy.

And why do people think Seneca is the next great receiver anyway? Theres no reason to think he would be better than our other receivers.

11,000 reasons for being happy to have Charlie Frye - Number 16 in total yards passing all time in college. The kid has a great arm, and Zorn will tutor him into a solid #2.

David Greene is the all time win leader in the SEC, so the college stats don't always translate. Seneca is a capable backup and unless something dramatic happens this season, he'll remain in that role. I don't understand the notion he is a great reciever either. HE'S FAST. That's all we really know. When and if the playoffs come our way, they may find ways to get him the ball but untill then I'd be incredibly suprised. This roster seems to be set to me.

These moves had nothing to do with the salary cap. However- I will point out that with the difference in salary between Fisher and Frye, the Hawks will have more available to spend next year. Given the large number of players who will become free agents after the season, this will not hurt. Especially since Fisher was no longer being counted on to start AND the massive amount of jack they are paying Kerney. I don't know all the numbers, but keep in mind all of the challenges that each offseason presents, especially when dealing with salary.

Best of luck from this Hawk fan to Bryce Fisher. Hopefully he helps that team make the playoffs. The guy is obviously a winner.
