Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren was downplaying this injury to Shaun's wrist, and was intent on not comparing it to the crack in Shaun's foot, but he did say the doctors took some more pictures of Shaun's wrist and discovered a small crack in it.

The net-net, Holmgren said, is that the cast he is wearing to protect it is a long-term thing, not a short-term fix. He also admitted that the wrist is having an affect on Alexander, from the way he carries the ball to being able to shift the ball to catching the ball to the way he falls to the ground. It is an issue, Holmgren said, but, again, he was trying to de-emphasize it.

Holmgren also said that Shaun started out with a smaller cast on during yesterday's game, then after he seemed to hurt it they put a bigger cast on it immobilize it. Or stabilize it. Are stabilize and immobilize the same thing? Whatever, they are trying to do both the his wrist.

Captain Crack. He is a crack addict. I wont complain about his work ethic, thats for sure. Runnin' a buck a game with a cracked wrist? I dont even write with a sprained wrist.

Maybe he needs more calcium; his bones are brittle or something.

Can I say "so much for the running game" yet? Or is everyone going to call me a fake fan...
Heifitz @ 15:41 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email
Well Shaun... here's your chance to "man-up" and prove all the "he's too soft yada yada yada" people wrong. Fact of the matter is he's had this pretty much from the beginning and has still had 100 yard games in 2 of 3 games played so far. Wouldn't mind seeing Weaver get a few more carries, either...
elperrograndedos @ 15:47 - Monday, September 24th, 2007
See ya Shaun ... it was way past time for the Hawks to be moving on ...
airbags @ 15:54 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email

well, whatever the outcome, the time has come to draft a new running back. even if shaun has a couple years left, a new guy couldn't hurt.

Scottlianematt @ 15:57 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email
Still doesn't explain the lack of ability to run through the hole like good running backs. I knew it was going to bite us in the but when he got his money, now he is going to use this as an excuse not to play hard. Just let him start his post "playing" career already so we can get somebody with heart.

downinthegroove78 @ 16:00 - Monday, September 24th, 2007
Absolutely stupid. The guy is a stud. Look at his numbers and how many big runs at the perfect time has he had in that last 2 games. He is off to what his second or third best start ever and people are talking like he is a waste of space. Go root for the Raiders.
elperrograndedos @ 16:00 - Monday, September 24th, 2007
The sooner we get rid of Shauna, the sooner this offense can start to prepare for a higher level of play ...

Yes he's soft. Yes, he spends more time looking for a soft place to land than he does a cutback lane.

And yes, when the blocking is decent, he's still the best pure runner in the game, and a future hall of famer.
airbags @ 16:15 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email

downinthegroove, i don't think it has anything to do with how he is performing now, but what this bodes for the future. it would simply be good business sense to pick up a new back now, and ease him into the rotation. i don't see anything wrong with that.

besides, i don't think anyone necessarily roots for a player as much as one would support the team. if the team needs a new back, then the team should probably pick up on one. if the multi-million dollar back isn't living up to his potential, then a rookie who's grateful to play the game will either perform better or light a fire under the rear of the multi-million dollar back.

BrianBlades @ 16:17 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email
What a bummer. Not a hater on Shaun, but I really don't think that giving him a reason to run more gingerly is a good thing.

What strikes me at this point is our complete lack of depth at all positions except WR. Crazy, but the drop is huge.

I like the effort that Morris gives, but not so sure...

I am not saying shaun is done, I am worried about what useless coach of the century mike holmgren will do. I think Shaun is the man, running like he is banged up. Makes me glad we have him.

However, do you really think Holmgren or whoever can FIX the running game? Is Morris going to have to heal extra fast to take reps? When will he be back? Is Weaver going to figure it out all of the sudden?

The running game isnt going to make a bit of difference unless we stop with the stupid play calling on 2nd and 4 and 3rd and 2.

What concerns me more regarding running games is our inability to contain Frank Gore. Yikes. Go fat kids.
maynerd @ 16:21 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email
Guys he's #3 in the NFC in rushing while playing with a hurt wrist for 2 weeks. Let's not sell him down the river just yet.
CecilAU @ 16:23 - Monday, September 24th, 2007
I'm a long time reader of this blog and first time poster - I just wanted to log on to say one thing. I really don't like the tone of this blog when we have people like ElPerroGrandeDos adding nothing to the blog but negativity.

I love reading the blog for the analysis but when I read people who are Seahawks fans write nothing of substance and only use this as a forum to berate members of the team who are doing the best they can to help it puts a sour taste in the mouth for people who come here to read about the team that they love.

I don't know if one of the Admins can do something about this, but I honestly think its gone beyond the point of asking politely to stop. I love this blog, I love the Hawks, but the negativity has got to stop.
airbags @ 16:26 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email

cecil, it's rabid fandom - it's hard to cull passion for one's team, even if people disagree.

at least the fandom IS rabid - beats having a good blog with no one reading.

either way, i think we're all doing good, here - at least we're talkin'.

welcome to the blog, by the way - post more often!

Heifitz @ 16:42 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email
To add on to maynerd's comment:

66 attempts, 275 yards (4.2 ypc average), 2 TD's
On pace for close to a 1500 yard year

He did this WITH the broken wrist folks, cast and all. "Rabid fandom" is one thing, but let's look at the situation a little closer before throwing ourselves off of the cliff (or Space Needle a la ESPN's article as of last week). Last time I checked, we're tied for first in the NFC West and one stupid play away from being 3 - 0.

GO HAWKS!!!

I've been down on the way SA has run this year, esp in the first half of games, and while that specific criticism may still hold -- jesus, i didn't know he was playing with a broken bone in his wrist. Pro football players are such tough guys. I give him much credit for playing with it, and for not bellyaching about it at all.

Teamwise, it's bad that he's going to be limited like this for some time, despite what Holmgren says, I find it pretty hard to believe that the healing process of the wrist won't be impacted by all the hits he'll be taking. Maybe we should sit him for a few games around the bye week (when is that again?).

And on the long-term side of things, yeah, it does underline our need to pick up a back next year, repeated injuries are the classic way that running backs start to go downhill as they get later in their careers. Maybe make a run at signing Turner from SD next year . . .
waveblasternutcase @ 16:57 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email
everybody has their opinion and should be allowed to share it. you can choose to agree or disagree. if we all agreed, this blog would be boring. LOL!!!

now to the topic at hand. does anybody have the stats for SA in his MVP year? i would be interested in seeing his numbers comparing first half of each game to the second half...

lordtd @ 17:00 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email
I saw Shaun on the sideline at least once in the first half, bent over in pain holding onto that arm. I think the tight cast was causing hits to hurt more, so he went to one with more padding that was less tight.

Think about it, not only does he have to carry the ball, he has to get hit and land on the bloody thing! In case you were wondering, broken bones hurt.

I also saw some really bad run blocking on several plays. Rob Sims got beat into the backfield at least twice that allowed his player to hit Shaun in the backfield, and I also saw Mack Strong wiff on at least 2 blocks that caused Shaun to be tackled for short gains. Strong made a great block on the 4th and 1 play (taking out 2 guys) but he missed several other blocks.

There also was a screen play when Sims totally missed his guy and let Shaun be tackled.

Say what you want about Shaun, but it's hard to claim it's his fault when he gets hit in the backfield.

By the way, Shaun has twice as many yards rushing as LT down in San Diego. Maybe the Chargers ought to dump LT as well.
ballgame @ 17:18 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email
Lordtd: Can you think of what some people would be saying on this blog is Shaun had LT numbers right now? My god people would think he was the worst back to ever play. I for one love watching Shaun play, his ability to look past the 1st wave is why he is a great back who cares in he doesn't lower his shoulder into 2 LB's on 1 & 10 to gain an extra half a yard, he doesn't when it matters and lives to play another day. But hey we could have a back like Stevens who pounds the football and will play again in 2 weeks.
bassnw @ 17:18 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email
Have no fear guys. Remember last year with the foot? Shaun will be the recipient of another "miracle" and be healed overnight. Oh...wait...that didn't work so well last year did it
ballgame @ 17:19 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email
*does it** not doesn't, oops
seattlelaw @ 17:23 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email
Look at the league statistics. In the first half you need a back who can block; carry the ball once or twice; maybe catch the ball in the flat once or twice. Second half, the speed advantage most of the linebackers and defenses enjoy starts to run a little slower--then you need the back who can run with the ball. So you hold him out more in the first half and hopefully find someone who has the skills necessary to contribute.

Worst thing about Shaun and to the extent contributing, the injury, is that he doesn't pass block very much and three times yesterday, he almost got your QB killed.

He is still great with the ball in the second half and contributed to the win. He will do that again. But you need another back. Maybe Pearman is a contributor--better hope so.
Stevo @ 17:29 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email
I think anyone who wants to critique Shaun Alexander should first fracture their foot, then their wrist, then get up tomorrow AM to jog and lift weights and join the Seahawks for practice... and then critique Shawn and tell us how soft he is.
HawkFromDay1 @ 17:40 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email
Put in Mo and Pearman so we can run this offense properly!!!
star4343 @ 18:57 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email
MO is hurt and perman is new adn a retred. This offense has been runniin gproperly for several years hence why we have been in the playoof for several years. It will continue to run right as long as we have Matt and SA. Oh by the way we are 3-3 with out Sa so I would be careful what you wish for.
cititravis @ 21:37 - Monday, September 24th, 2007 Email
Drmossguy,

you are an idiot! " I am worried about what useless coach of the century mike holmgren will do"

Yeah completely usesless super bowl winning coach. And the only coach in Seahawk history to take us to the superbowl! Go back to being a Cardinal fan or raider fan.

Are you dating ElPerro Jackass and having a contest to see who can make the dumbest statement?
downinthegroove78 @ 07:42 - Tuesday, September 25th, 2007
Shawn will be fine. Remember he is normally out on third and long, passing situations. They bring Mo in. Mo's hurt. As for drafting a RB, I think we have bigger holes to address rather then wasting a pick on a RB early. If anything needs to be pointed out, perhaps we look at the line play rather than the RB. Even Walt gave up a sack. So, really. Grow up.
